Sir John Curtice on BBC Breakfast: Reaction to local elections as Labour win Blackpool

The results of Thursday’s local elections that were counted overnight make difficult reading for the Conservatives.
Some losses were inevitable. Most of the seats being elected yesterday were previously contested in May 2021. Then, the Conservatives were six points ahead of Labour in the national polls. Now they are 20 points behind.
But the scale of their losses so far will worry the Conservatives. In the overnight counts, they have lost half of the council seats they were trying to defend. If that trend continues when most of the rest of the results are declared today, the final tally could prove to be 500 losses.
The message they need to take away is F off!!!
Simple, but very effective.
Have ever considered a career in government communications? You might be just what they need.
Rishi Sunak , Boris and all the tory Mp's & everyone from conservative party its time to go home after ruining the country for the last 14 years. #ShameonYouAll #ShameonBorisJohnson4partying #DuringLockdown 👎👎👎
Voting is a sham. All these politicians all drink from the same cup. London's finished and so is this country because the government have destroyed it through greed. It's all down hill because nothing ever changes and yet we still have muppets voting.
Starmerama is the prospect though
Rishi Sunak to comment soon ‘This wasn’t a good night for Labour either who used to have Jeremy Corbyn as leader in case you’ve forgotten. What’s clear is that the British people want us to get on with the job of governing and deliver on our pledges’ 😂😂😂

Tories out. For good.
If the Tories are out forever what is your solution to prevent a never ending Labour dictatorship replacing our current democratic system ?
Professor Sir John Curtice, best in the business.
If you ad the reform and tory votes together, Labour still got 4000 vote more, so the reform votes made no difference.
It was Brexit that cost Labour the last Election.

@@Noel-ji8nm Can't work out if you're being sarcastic or not. It is irrelevant because Corbyn failed to win the last election and so helped enable all of this. "It would have worked if only they'd done it right" is the same thing that Tice and Farage claim.

Yes there will be much more lying and dirty tricks brigade will be out in force for the tory campaign. Like the Facebook algorithms are doing now as we see more and more.

"There are none so blind as those who will not see. So this game of political Ping-Pong the Conservatives and Labour party's have be playing for decades carries on .
just keep labour in then
If Labour are in forever what is your solution from preventing a never-ending Labour dictatorship replacing our current democratic system ?
Thing will certainly change in tbe next six months. Border checks will cause price rises....things will be worse! 😅
Its foolish to think Labour will be any better. It will be business as usual. You'll still be fighting over welfare crumbs and minimum wage jobs against imported cheap labour. These people couldn't care less about unions snd workers rights. They will work for longer and cheaper and you will be paying for them.
It's not helped by the scorched earth policy the Tories have carried out knowingly, they've done nothing for the electorate, they've emptied the piggy bank to make their friends richer.
Its like voting for which half of a shit sandwich you would like to eat.
That would only happen because the Tories have shovelled all of our money into their friends' pockets.
PS: You Tory trolls will really have to come up with something new, as your Jeremy Corbyn attacks don't work in the post-Corbyn world, this idea that Labour are anything like the soon-to-be-departed Tory Crime Syndicate are laughable.
They never mention the breakthrough by the Liberal Democrats and the Greens. Both improved their position. The Liberal Democrats got 2 more Councils. The Greens almost took Bristol as a council. The Conservatives can't come back from this
What's the plan now ...GE
Always surprises me why these people get paid to tell us what we already know.
Contempt for the con men: Johnson, Gove, Truss and Sunak. Utter contempt!!
Labour, conservative, lib dem green and reform, much of a much imo.. I contracted for many years for many companies. Some were good, some were bad, some were surreal good, and some were plain disgusting. The great beauty was I could walk away any time I wanted from stuff, and I often did. I am longing for the days after the General Election, the UK will be a Tory free zone. Isabelle Oakshot will leave Richard Tice for someone of her own age. Farage and Anne Widcombe will buy a guest house together in Eastbourn. Jeremy Corbyn will be upsetting the nurses in his sheltered accommodation, with occasional sleepovers from Diane Abbott. It can't come too soon.
Jeremy Corbyn isn't a Tory. That's Starmer in all but name. Look at all the Tory MPs switching to Starmer's party. The only change they'll have, is the colour of their ties. Still a friend to big businesses, to donors, to privatisation, to praising Thatcher. To writing in the S*n, to scapegoating migrants, gay people, and other minorities. Still hating the EU. Still flag shagging the Union Jack. Still failing to invest in green policies, building new AFFORDABLE homes, public services, a living wage.
Love it. Boris, 60 next month. already showing signs of forgetfulness, was turned away from a polling station yesterday, unable to vote as he'd forgotten his photo ID. He was the very PM who introduced this ridiculous measure. Schadenfreude at its finest!

Blackpool 🤮
Why is everyone ignoring the elephant in the room with this by-election... 32.5% turnout, compared to 56.8% in the 2019 general election! LESS THAN A THIRD of the electorate could be a****d to vote. This is given that it's more typical to have above average turnout at by-elections rather than lower turnout. This could be due, in part, to potential voter confusion about the by election vs council and PCC occuring at the same time which typically have lower turnouts. Alternately, it could be due to voters knowing that a general election has to be held within the next 8 months or so, meaning whomever is in now will have to stand again in less than a year.
But still, 10,825 is notably down from the 17,581 and 12,557 achieved by Marsden in the prior two general elections. Labour got this one by default in a screamingly loud way. The British electorate will have no right to moan about the state of things in the years to come if they do not use their vote.
John Curtice, God bless him, is starting to look like an extra on the Walking Dead
Not as clear cut as you say. Plus local so only council tax at risk from Labour. Tories held Harlow and won Oldham.
Tories didn't win Oldham. It went to NOC and that was because Labour lost some seats to independents not to Tories.
