    Sunak makes a belaboured point of insisting he attended everything British only and just missed the international part of the remembrance. It is the international part that is perhaps the most important and impactful part of the memorial.

      First because it shows we can have unity despite extreme differences and if that doesn't matter to these guys, standing as one with world leaders as the pm of the UK is an important national and pm position symbolism. "The UK is one of the world leaders". Skipping that is a massive insult to the international prestige of the UK.

    As a remainer and a veteran and somebody who still works in defence, I still feel it is important to try and hang on to the distinction that the UK (regretfully) voted to leave the EU trading bloc and not Europe as a continent. But to see this clown bail on a D Day memorial, at a time when there is a Hitleresque war in Europe, and when even the German chancellor and the very President of the country at war, were present, is just catastrophically humiliating. The lebel of shame I feel can't really be expressed in words. I didn't really think we could sink much lower and yet here we are. I find myself feeling a genuinely vitriolic hatred to this government now. Furthermore how can they bang on about young people having a sense of duty when they clearly cannot exercise that same sense themselves.

    Being a veteran of nearly 11 years Operational Service and 22 years, I am glad this happened, as it shows the absolute contempt the Tories have ALWAYS had for the Armed Forces. After every modern engagement/war the Tories have always helmed cuts for the Forces, not to mention that the 1922 committee were willing to sell the country out to Germany during WW2. Their track record speaks for itself, that is true as those veterans living homeless has risen by 14% (as per the Guardian) in the last year. The Tories make the problem and or make it worse then sell us snake oil for fix it, but this, as a Fourth Generation Armed Forces and knowing what the Greatest Generation went through as well as feeling it through my own losses makes my frickin blood boil, but what to expect from someone who sees me as a figure, beneath contempt, has no real world experience and especially no street smarts (as one of your callers ponted out), as I look at my Grandfather's picture, knowing some of the horrors he carried with him through out his life and he never spoke of, I only know because of the ships logs he served on, sorry, I need a car park with the PM in it.

      It's six weeks including the closure of Parliament and Royal protocol. We've had two weeks and it seems an eternity as the same stale arguments get aired repeatedly. Only the journalists love the circus that comes around every 4 or 5 years. British politicians are also extraordinarily badly dressed with no sense of what is casual dress or with clashing colours on tv.

    It was not "their" war, James. There is also a general disdain for violence, killing and war amongst younger generations that makes celebrating or commemorating such events distasteful to them. The younger generations recognise respect, but the trend is towards no longer making a fuss that seems to them to be aggrandizing war. Times are changing.

    • @annphillips1086
      @annphillips1086 2 месяца назад +1

      Celebrating is distasteful; the veterans there are not celebrating, because they know better than anyone that war is not glorious, it is ghastly. Commemorating on the other hand is vital, because make no mistake: it can happen again, and will if we ignore history. That is why the German chancellor was part of the event this time, rightly in my view. In war there are no winners, only those who lose the least. Germany's story tells us that not only can any country start a war, but the same country can be in the forefront of rebuilding and consolidating peace. Peace will not be achieved by pretending war didn't/doesn't happen.

    How can Sunak say don't bring politics into D-Day, then return to the UK early to talk about politics to a TV channel reporter.
    The Prime Minister is the only one who can set the Election date.
    D-Day events were already arranged in his diary.
    He must have also been aware that the Election Day will be on the same day as the USA's Independence Day.
    How could a UK Prime Minister be so oblivious to the consequences of disappearing from these very important events?
    Allegedly, the TV programme was going to be pre-recorded during the campaign so it could have been postponed. Another MP could have replaced him in the TV interview and offered apologies for his absence. His party, his constituents and his supporters would have understood that D-Day was a priority over pre-recording an interview.
    Political parties think they can represent any location in the UK, move into any department in the Government or become Prime Minister without training or qualifications to do those jobs.
    The Peter Principle is about employees being promoted in business to their level of incompetence and it seems also in governments.
    In my opinion every time a PM resigns or is pushed to leave by his own party, there should be a General Election and in all Referendums there should be a 75% majority A General Election should have been called when Boris Johnson left the office of Prime Minister.
    No idea should be implemented before studying cause and effect.
    Politicians should not mislead the population regarding any policy they intend to implement after they are elected.....in campaigns, in government or in opposition. There are exceptional circumstances when the truth cannot be told at certain times but when a population of a country completely lose their trust in the people who represent them, other countries will not trust the UK
