  • Took stormy in for a check up and accurate weight. 😩 she’s not gained the weight like I’d hoped. She’s gained less than 5 pounds. But it’s better than nothing. Her blood looked better. Her X-Rays still show that she is a female. Sending all the results off to a wildlife vet to review and make sure we aren’t missing anything. Still waiting on the fecal sample dna results to see if she is still carrying that parasite. Will be sending in another fecal sample for a comprehensive parasite test. She may need another round of meds. She is a mystery but such a special and sweet soul.
Took Tulip on a walk to her big pool. It won’t be long before she can move!

Still, she looks 100% better than when she first arrived. Rescues/rehabilitations, challenging, lots of unknowns. She is in great hands. Thanks for being such a great guardian of the sick and weak.

Stormy's issue reminds me of "failure to thrive" in human children. She's lost her entire beaver family, was badly injured, nearly killed, and stuck in the drain pipe for who knows how long. No wonder that she's taking so long to recover from the trauma. Thanks for looking deeper into possible physical causes.

@@kimlalajo Wild animals can suffer a form of PTSD, and I have always thought this is Stormy's problem. If you watched her previous encounters with Tulip, who is a remarkably gentle beaver, Stormy was asocial and for the most part lay doggo. Tulip's very presence seemed inimical to Stormy. I want to believe that this could change, but I am very doubtful it will advance to much more. Maybe things would change after dark, when Stormy seems to be more active? I am certain that if Stormy is free of parasites there will be further introductions.

@@Bloodnok49 I agree with you. Stormy is visibly shaken when Tulip comes around. I think she is afraid of her. I'm hoping that will change soon when they get Tulip closer to her enclosure.

Stormy would never have made it this far without you Holley.... and also your wonderful family. Stormy may be shy, but she certainly trusts you, even to get into the crate for you. ❤ Dear sweet Tulip. I can just imagine her internal voice.....
"Where are we going now? What on earth is this muddy water. Please don't tell me I have to mess up my clean fur in this mud! So that's where my swimming pool went to!! What in tarnation made them move it all the way out here? Don't you realise I only have short legs? Ahhh....supper. There had better be something good under this green stuff! Where's my grapes and banana!? Oh well, I'll settle for sweet potato I guess".
*Bless you* for all the superb care and love you give every creature that comes to you. ❤

Sweet Stormy Rose, despite still suffering from her trauma, trusts Holley enough to enter the crate. It was interesting to see how the vet withdraws blood, which of course is a critical test for her health, but kind of sad to see her sedated, helpless, on her back, her love of privacy violated. But, if she is to thrive and gain weight, we must know what is going on with her. Blood reveals so much. That poor girl, back home, entering her pool alone - she just seems so lonely! Her family is gone, and she’s probably afraid to get attached again in case something happens to destroy her new family. Tulip is so brave to follow Holley over all sorts of terrain - and a little stream - to reach her new pool! What a good girl (?) she is!

Oh, Holley, thank you so much for the update on Stormy Rose! You managed to steer her toward and into the carrier quite quickly, considering it's probably a tad perplexing for her to have to get into that space. What a beautiful girl she is. Sorry to hear she hasn't gained as much weight as you'd like. Thanks so much for letting us know the outcome of some of the tests in the video's description. I will look forward to finding out the results of the rest of the tests. How sweet it was to watch Stormy Rose waddle back into her enclosure and then climb into her pool (HER own pool!)
It was also so precious to watch Tulip follow you on the walk to her new space and her new pool. Fantastic milestone to introduce her to the new pool, and before she can move into her new enclosure! How exciting! Thank you again so much for the updates and a fun video, Holley!

In squirrel rehab to encourage rodent block/more substance we would finely grind rodent block and mix it with some unsweetened baby food for a bit of moisture and natural nut butter, make balls and feed that way. Some ppl would also add milk replacement formula to that. So, wild squirrels in rehab who would not touch rodent block otherwise, gladly ate those “balls” - we did keep track of
roughly how many rodent block pcs when into balls
in order to ensure they weren’t under- or over nourished.
Perhaps, something like that could help Stormy eat more of the rodent chow/block, if they don’t find any internal parasites that may be preventing her from gaining weight.

Stormy 🌹 looks so much better, you’d never guess she wasn’t putting on weight. In fact, I would have thought she was “within normal limits” in weight had I not seen Tulip 🌷 afterwards.
Question Doc M: can beavers get _capture myopathy?!_ I know once the obvious signs appear, there’s not much left to do, but could Stormy 🌹 still be exhibiting CM & that’s why she’s not putting on weight?!
I like how Tulip 🌷 went straight for the 🍠 & flung the kale off 😅 (me & Tulip 🌷 are like 🤞🏼 when it comes to green veggies 😂) It’s all good because Tulip 🌷 got her steps in with that adventurous trek she took to get to her pool, complete with a mud trench & everything!

I appreciate all of the worry and effort you put into each one of your critters, their health and wellbeing. The way you and your family are dedicating your time, money, knowledge, sweat, tears, and love into each one of them must make it even more frustrating when puzzles like Miss Stormy Rose arise.
She is looking so much better than she did when she first arrived! Her fur is healthier and her limbs are rounding out nicely. I know wild critters that come into our care can be more of a challenge than hand reared or domesticated ones. I hope you soon get some answers that will help. ⚘

I was wondering about Stormy's inability to gain weight and considering some form of viral wasting disease. Additionally, i have always noticed how painfully s-l-o-w her walk is when compared to the confident waddling of Tulip, Petunia, Tater, or Turnip -- and that leads me to wonder about the possibility of underlying brain damage.

Could she aquire what she needs from swimming in tulips old pool water? (drained into stormys pool so not to contaminate tulips pool.

Holley, is it possible that Stormy isn't putting on weight because she is very active? In the wild she would have been on the move a lot to get food and whatever; maybe her body is just responding to the lower energy demands by storing less fat? Just wondering; I am unencumbered by any actual knowledge.
