    If you go through one red light, you would not then run them all. Why would you do that after one imperfect meal choice? - Say screw it, and eat like crap all day.

      @@lilhumblebee they are not miracle drugs. The main use of a probiotic is to prevent bad bacteria from having a space in your intestine after a sickness wipes them out. Most of the bacteria are not alive in the pills, so if you want a better chance of getting viable organisms, eat Greek yogurt. Most probiotic pills are not typically regulated by the fda due to being classified as supplements rather than drugs, so please be careful on which ones you try, as they may contain other things you don't want or not have the advertised type of bacteria (this is surprisingly common).

    Also do a video about how major weight loss affects your mental health. You are happy, but your brain really can't handle the change that quickly and you slowly become sadder.

      Not everyone is happy after major weight loss. Keep in mind weight loss isnt always intentional and could be due to many factors

      I lost 80 lbs a few years ago. I've since gained it all back. It was difficult to deal with people's "compliments."
      Aunt1: You're so pretty now.
      Me: Was I not before?
      Aunt2: It's like there's a person there now.
      Me: What was I before? A shrubbery?

    Since I'm Autistic and usually have trouble figuring out what to eat. I really hate the concept of diets, because it makes figuring out what to eat harder.

    I think diet mentality ruined me tbh i started obsessing over every little thing that i eat until I stopped caring about diet and started focusing on just being aware of what i eat

    I've been overweight my entire life and have tried a good variety of diets. Nutrutionism used to be an obsession/passion, and as a result, I know a college amount about food, diet trends, cooking, calories and gut health. About 6-7 years ago, I lost 75 pounds over 24 months by following a strick - to the calorie, self directed diet. During this time, I developed major depression, and although I looked good, I was dying inside. 5 years later - I've slowly gained it all back. Feeling like a failure, my last foray into dieting was a 6 week attempt at Keto in 2017. After 4 weeks, my obsession with obtaining perfect 'Macros', started my depression right up again. I realized I had to stop and I started seeking out diet and mental health research. I discovered that approx. 95% of diets don't work in the long term and this cycle can be mentally debilitating. Since then, I still find it hard to shed the pounds, but I've adopted self acceptance and even rock a two piece at the beach! I've adopted the philosophy that no food should be taboo, but the majority of your food decisions should follow a general guide: Eat mostly plants (1/2 plate), get enough protein (I prefer to not eat a lot of meat, so nuts, eggs and tofu are in), and eat less, but better carbs like yams and whole grains/seeds. Drink lots of water, coffee before noon, while wine and other drinks are occational nice-to-haves. I'm not going to stress about my weight, I'm going to focus on just being healthy and get excited about trying a new things. I now understand the 'healthy at every size' movement and try to ignore the negative feedback that people give. I have faced my own dealth in an effort to be seen as 'healthy' on the outside and there is something so wrong about that. I'm in my mid 30's now, and I'm still surprised by how many people still openly discuss fad dieting solutions as the be all end all. The sad thing is, I don't think fad diets coupled with body negativity are going away any time soon.

    I know a lot of people see dieting as problematic. But, dieting and changing my lifestyle has really helped with my mental stability. On top of improving my overall health. It's changed my entire life for the better. Just last year I was pushing 300lbs I am now down to 167lbs and I couldn't be happier. If I were to continue down the path I was on of emotional binge eating as a coping mechanism for my severe depression and anxiety, there's no telling where I'd be today. Diet and exercise has truly saved my life.

    I struggle with binge eating (sans purging) after a long remission with bulimia and anorexia. It has been decades since I had a "normal" diet, it goes from one extreme to the other. Bunge eating leaves me feeling anxious, disappointed, out of control and depressed. I usually binge on weekends. I intend to only have one day of bad eating but it never works I end up binge eating for the entire weekend. Monday comes around and I feel horrible. I get back to eating healthy and at times only eating once a day to make up for my binge eating. Thankfully I haven't resorted to purging after the binging again. Thanks for sharing this video, I really needed this today.

    Th compounding effect is real! When seeking for help with my depression, the doctor uncovered I had a severe iron deficient anemia. I had been getting down on myself for being out of shape and always tired (hallmarks of anemia). There is still depression there for sure, but I feel SO much better now that my hemoglobin is going back up.

    Thank you for this video. Echoing some other requests, can you do a video about dealing with significant weight loss.
    A. Dealing with "compliments" that aren't as nice as people think they are.
    B. Dealing with people who offer unsolicited advice about losing weight that is contradictory to whatever you're doing that is working.
    C. Dealing with the body not being what you expected (loose skin, for example).

    I think it's great that you didn't mention losing weight/not gaining weight as a reason to eat 'healthy'. But the same time I'm dissapointed that you didn't say a word about fatphobia which as I believe is causing many of us to get stressed about food and hate our bodies.

    I like that (as a culture) we're learning more about better dieting and how physical and mental health go together. With that said, I think dieting culture can be extremely toxic. As someone who is really into fitness and trying to eat healthy but also suffers from mental illness, the constant misinformation and contradictory information and unrealistic expectations on social media is incredibly stressful. I really had to distance myself from the online fitness culture because it was becoming toxic for me, mentally. I'm glad you talked about this topic and I even shared this video with my husband, who is also really into fitness.

    The last year I've been a stay at home dad... I've falling in a weird funk(depression) where I was lost. My relationship with "diet" was horrible. I was a personal trainer before being a stay at home dad and not working in a gym and in social environment has but my mental and physical health last priority. Thank you for this video!

    Moderation, in everything except moderation and vegetables. Personally, I find that being concious of what my body reacts poorly to makes it easier to use "heavy" foods (dairy, gluten, processed sugar, anything that makes me sluggish and bloated) as treats and not staples. By default, my diet is very protein and produce heavy, and that's done wonders for my general mood and mental acuity.

      But if you eat too much spinach you can get kidney stones because of the oxalate acid. Everything in moderation

    Have been working on stuff with my counselor, the last 3 weeks or so I have been able to avoid binging and eat more mindfully, the change in my energy levels and sleep habits has been incredible and I noticed a difference so quickly!

    Hi Kati from Spain, thank you so much for this video. I had thyroid cancer 4 years ago. I being overweight almost my entire life, but since I had the operation I am more overweight, suffering from depression and anxiety, because I am overweight, this causes me other problems like social anxiety, not going out and problems with my husband.     Watching this 2 years later... as Registered Dietitian myself, I really love that "body of water" analogy. I'm gonna use that with my patients who stress! And kudos for bring on a registered dietitian and not a "nutritionist" or wellness guru.

    I love the emphasis about building good habits and not necessarily dieting. Eating healthy is important. But, it should be something we enjoy and don't stress about. There is definitely a balance that we need to reach. And, Kati and Erin facilitated my understanding of that process. Thank you!

    This was a nice video. My idea of the diet culture is that food is everywhere and there is always something going on. Holidays, family gatherings, fast food places and the snack isles in the stores. I busted my ankle a few months ago and had a run of bad health with my kidneys. I do what I call the "eliminate and refresh," every time I would go to the bathroom, I would drink a glass of water. It really worked for me.

    I really feel like the diet culture is hurtful mostly because people don't realize that they don't need to diet in order to feel good and to lose weight among other things. I was one of those people too, but now that I'm more mature, I can appreciate that it's less abour what not to eat and more about your overall mentality. Thank you so much Kati for this video!     This was incredibly helpful! For me personally, the diet culture is incredibly toxic (at least for now, while I’m trying to figuring it all out for my body). I learnt this a few months ago and it had me come to the conclusion to delete Instagram. I have felt a much clearer mind of what I need to do for myself in order to stay healthy physically and mentally. I’ve learnt that being healthy is better than “needing the perfect body,” and I will definitely be focusing more on appreciating my body and all it does for me. I feel that I am on the right track and I am so grateful that my mind has been able to withstand all of the overthinking, anxiety, and knowledge it has gone through, as well as constantly forgiving me for being so harsh on myself. My sister sent me this video because she knows I’ve discovered my mild body image issues and it was amazing to watch! I saved the video so I could easily come back to it whenever I need! Thanks for this! ❤️❤️❤️

      That's one of the things that could be discussed in nutrition counseling as you can reframe the process or make it easier with the help of the RD.

      Of course, though dieting and over exercising your hormones get completely out of whack which directly affects your mental health. When someone needs to study for school for example, this is very very difficult when this person doesn't eat enough or is on a diet. Because it affects your brain and mental state so tremendously. People truly underestimate that. It even can affect relationships and your whole social life. I work as an eating disorder recovery coach and I see many people who come from the fitness industry with exactly these issues: anxiety, depression, hypochondria, many other mental health issues, social isolation, broken relationships and so many other issues. Unfortunately, no one talks about that.

      I can diet just fine and so can many others who do not have concurrent mental health issues without having it affect our mental health.

    Kati, I love this series you are producing. I am a Social Worker with a homeless program that requires me to drive around to see my clients. This episode is especially important to me because thinking about nutrition is the last thing on my mind and tend to eat a lot of fast food because I am driving all around the county.     I think diets wouldn't be as much of a problem if our society didn't push for everyone looking perfect. No matter how much we tell our kids that looks don't matter, media poisons there minds to thinking they are only worth something if they are beautiful.

      Agreed. That's a really good point. The state of our cultural interpretation of beauty or to reach some kind of standard for our appearance is something that's more harmful than any diet fad.

      If you liked this video, you might be interested to know that Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause depression. Also, a person may eat lots of animal products (which contain B12), and still may not be adequately absorbing B12. Reasons for this malabsorption can include: history of having part of the intestine removed, having Crohn’s disease and associated intestinal inflammation, bacterial or yeast overgrowth, low stomach acid, taking meds that suppress stomach acid, and genetic predisposition!

    As always, a brilliant video! The most powerful part for me was comparing giving in to entire "treat/bad days" as going through red lights. I am AWFUL at writing a whole day off of healthy eating because I went out with family and ate a very high calorie meal. Why do I think I should then keep going?! I don't even understand it. I hope this helps me gain control again when I find myself in this situation. Thank you for this video. It was very interesting and educational xx

      Arin pretty sure fasting isn’t good for binging. You should listen to your body when it naturally would feel hungry.

    please don't forget people with disabilities and chronic illnesses when having this discussion, who might struggle even more to appreciate their bodies than nondisabled people. not to say you can't appreciate your body no matter what it can and can't do :) just something to mindful of

    I think it depends on your established mental health / personality .
    I was obese at one point and I lost weight in a healthy way initially and then I got obsessive and developed an eating disorder from age 15-21 . So it really depends

      I have heard that this is totally common. I read some research a while back that says we are at risk for an eating disorder anytime we start or try a diet even when we aren't even expecting it or even when our intentions are good and we've never had any sort of problem before. Thanks for sharing.

      @@ashleyshore8405 That is very true ! I work as an eating disorder recovery coach and the most common reason why someone develops an eating disorder is dieting. Every second person on this planet earth has already experienced some kind of disordered eating and in fact, every second woman is currently on a diet or has already tried at least one diet in their life. That is incredible. And the dark digit is even higher than expected because most people don't even realize they have a problem because society and the diet industry always tells people it has something to do with "willpower and discipline".

    I love this conversation. Precovid I was super into cross fit and the strict diets. Once the shut down hit I realized all the places I didnt go to and the restrictions I gave myself just because of a strict diet and the everyday strict workouts I just couldn’t miss. Ive since gained weight and realized I’m not this horrible looking thing I thought I would be. Instead I’m trying to find a simple middle ground where I eat to feel good and also not isolate. The isolation is the worst.

    I just get rid of processed foods and sugar and my mental health improved drastically. It's been already two years and I have also noticed I really need foods with folate, magnesium, Omega 3 and B 12 so I'm eating more spinach, beets, broccoli, fish and liver.     omg i can totallty relate ! man, that was powerful ! i have multiple stomach ulcers (wich are bleeding), gastrits and IBD i do suffer whenever i eat , after i ate AND whenever i'm hungry !!! so DO NOT take it for granted .. my gut do cause me to cramp and bleed it realy get me down, it make my depression even worse... please take care of yourself and know that you are blessed if you are healthy nomatter how you look like in the outside

    Thank you so much! I've been trying to have this approach to my body and my wholistic health for years. Every day is a chance to start fresh and I'm thankful for the reminder to have more grace for myself. The diet culture has really messed me up most of my life. I was the "fat kid" growing up. It wasn't because of laziness either. I rode my bicycle everywhere when it wasn't snowing, I was on the basketball team, I loved to swim. My parents did the best they could in providing healthy food for us but we were poor. And they didn't have good information either about what was "healthy". It's hard to have conversations with my dad to this day because he still equates thin with healthy. He's looking for a quick fix pill or fad that will give him results without changing his attitude towards food & wellness. I may never be a size 16 but that's OK because I know how to care for myself. I love gardening and we have chickens for eggs and I think that connection has helped me as well. Sorry, I kind of rambled here. This has been such a lifelong struggle and I'm glad to be reaching a more healthy place 🙂

    As a woman entering into perimenopause my serotonin levels are naturally declining and so I am starting to crave sugar and carbs more-so than at any other point in my life. I used to be able to maintain my weight or lose weight fairly easily until now. My cravings are much more insatiable and harder to control. Carb cycling is so important for women over 40. I just read Jorge Cruises book for women over 40 and highly recommend it.

    I'm on the keto diet. It can be hard to stick to but it makes my head clearer. My mood stabilizer is an anti-seizure medication and the diet was originally created for people who suffered from seizures, so that part of my brain must be what is malfunctioning.

    Kati, I have a friend that I think is developing an eating disorder. She goes through phases of restricting, bingeing, and purging. How can I encourage her to get better? I try and reassure her that eating lunch is a good thing, and protein shakes aren’t meal replacements, but I don’t want to annoy her or unintentionally make her behavior worse. I care about her a lot and want to see her happy again

    I'm so glad this video was made. I needed to hear this as recovery is not going well. My big issue with diet culture is that it equates health with appearances. As if you should only eat vegetables and exercise to manipulate your body rather than to take care of it.

    I'm dieting since I was 10. I always struggle with food and dieting and now i'm a binge eater. After so many years of yoyo weight gain and loss, i finally decided to stop this cycle.

      I also started to diet at the age of 10 and then I suffered from binge eating disorder almost 10 years. I am fully recovered for many years now but looking back now I can see how amazing this whole fitness and diet trend was to me. The only way to get out of this is to stop dieting and restricting and over exercising. Regaining a healthy relationship towards food and the body was one of the most incredible and beautiful experiences I could have in my life and I truly wish everybody could recognize that dieting is not the way to live a healthy and happy life long term. All the best for your journey :)

    well, dieting shoots the probability of getting an eating disorder, so that's not great. I don't think I would have ed if the world didn't focus so much on thinness and fitness.

      This may be true for you but dieting doesn't cause eating disorders. That needs to stop being repeated because some people's health improves dramatically on a diet. Ie you're 400 lbs and get to 200.

      @@jrg305 dieting in my teen years literally gave me an eating disorder. There is scientific evidence it can cause eating disorders, don't spread wrong information

      @@orangepulp392 I'm licensed as a dietitan. Go tell the board. For you they are co-occuring. You can't generalize it to everyone. Dieting is good for most of the population but not those with predisposition for eating disorders. Such a small percentage of the population has eating disorders compared to the amount with overweight and obesity. Not to say you aren't important, but the public health message shouldn't change.

      @@jrg305 🙄 there's no mental health issue that affects everyone 100% of the time. Two people can go through the same trauma and one has ptsd, one doesn't. Two people can take drugs and one develops schizophrenia and one doesn't. Two people can suffer abuse or loss and one develops depression and one doesn't. That's literally how genetics work. People are different.

    Im a nutritionist in Mexico and this was so informative! Here is sort of backwards the whole dietitian vs nutritionist. Nutritionist here is someone who went through 4yrs of college education in food sciences and nutritional sciences. A dietitian is someone who isnt necessary certified or has studied nutrition but has practiced nutrition in clinical institutions or hospitals and the like.

    Hi Kati, I loved this topic. I have tried soooo many diets and got fatter each time! I am currently on 'another' diet that seriously restricts calories. I have lost alot of weight but am terrified of coming off the diet plan. I want to learn about intuitive eating but don't trust my food choices. I love vegetables/fruit and all foods considered to be 'healthy' but rely on sugary snacks to help me cope with depression and high stress situations. I am a full time carer for a profoundly disabled son. If he becomes unwell my eating goes crazy.... I loved the topic today but after watcing I think I will book to see a dietition alongside some therapy. 😊

    Hi Kati. I don't believe in dieting. I believe in making a lifestyle change. That includes eating more healthy foods and exercising. I have done those things with surprising and welcome results. Thank you for making a video on this subject and your tireless efforts.

    since I start avoiding some kind of food (junk food, sugar, ...) I actually start feeling emocionally better... When younger I suffered from anxiaty, grumpy and I cried for practically nothing... I was a mess!!! Nowadays I eat more vegetables and food that ain't that processed!!!

    Thanks for taking the time to connect these two dots. There needs to be more practical tips here on what to limit and what to eat more of. People need practical tips because of all of the misguided information. Eat more plants!

    Actually, this is awesome because I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My GP made a holistic assessment for burnout and found the thyroid issue, Vit D deficiency, high cortisol, potential depression and recommended diet changes. I've now found out vegetarian or vegan is not an option for me. I go into sun more...trying to boost thyroid to avoid meds. But trusting my Dr worked. I could have been taking too high doses of antidepressants or self medicated W energy pills and missed it entirely. It's wonderful you refer to others Katie.

    Dieting in my teens destroyed my mental health. I still have binge eating disorder 5 years later. I also noticed I feel so depressed when dieting or binging. I'm so mad I started dieting, I wasn't even overweight.

    Thank you for adressing IBD! I got Crohn's Disease, and was putting off watching this video, as I met way too many nutritionists who keep telling me 'eating healthy is also proven to be important with a bowel disease, so you should just eat your vegetables. No excuses.' But plant fibres hurt me so terribly much, it's awful! And if I ignore that and keep eating it every day, I damage my bowels and get all clogged up. Even when there doesn't seem to be inflammation! I've tried psyllium fibres, and within 3 days I was so clogged up, I needed multiple laxedents to get rid of that. I've had nutritionists try to tell me I'm just making myself sick by not eating plant fibres. Hun, no. Crohn's Disease is making me sick and CAUSING me to be unable to eat plant fibres. Even my bowel doctor tried all she could, and is at a loss, and told me to avoid plant fibres if it's having this effect on me. So I now learned to avoid nutritionists like the plague, as a lot of them (I'm sure there will be good ones, even though I haven't met them) just immediately jump on my case with bad advice the moment they find out about my Crohn's Disease. No, thank you hun. I'm good. So yes, I really want to thank you for taking IBD patients seriously in this video. I was very pleasantly surprised. ❤

    I think part of the issue in itself is the very word "diet". I joined WW and I lost 130 pounds. It's not a "diet", it's a lifestyle change. My only issue with the weight loss now is my brain comprehending the weight loss and still seeing a heavier me. I hope everyone who struggles can find their healthy solution to eating healthy. 😊

    I personally am not a fan of 'dieting' as such and just prefer to try and eat foods I know are better for me, and limit the ones that aren't. However I do struggle with restricting calories sometimes and when I'm in a bad headspace, will try and control things by counting calories to the dot and eating less...I would say it's almost a form of self-harm for me :( I try not to start diets because I know I would go overboard with them xx

      Sounds very much lite disordered eating or symptoms of an eating disorder. Please seek help if its affecting you too much ❤ that's no way to live your life. You need to switch that behaviour to good coping mechanisms

    Love your content and your videos Kati! Thank you for your contribution to the mental health world... Just wanted to highlight a small correction thou that can mislead the community. The serotonin in our gut is not the same one that is present in our brain. It is an old misconception. But it is now known that the comment made about serotonin in our gut is not accurate.

    Man for sure being an HSP person and dealing with body image, self esteem issues has affected the way I see my body and compare it to others. Recently I started having awful anxiety and is causing my appetite to decrease or kinda be disgusted by too much food. I’m limiting on the amount of carbs I intake and also sugary food.

    Hi Kati. I hear what your saying but I've eaten so little for so long I never feel hunger and when I do force myself to eat I feel ill. I know I need to have food to stay alive but the taste, the texture it's just so unpleasant it feels like torture. I've stopped buying food now because I end up throwing it away and I hate myself for wasting it when others in the world can't afford to eat. It's a good job someone makes nurishment drinks....     The way that college graduation works in the US and here in Brazil is so different! In Brazil and in Mercosur countries, the professional title of those who are graduated in Nutrition and Dietetics is a Nutritionist or Bachelor in Nutrition. In addition, to act, you must be registered with the Regional Council of Nutritionists (CRN) in your region. In this sense, the professional activity performed by unregistered individuals is considered "Illegal Exercise of the Profession". For this record to be made, the minimum requirement is the completion of an undergraduate course in Nutrition that is recognized by the Ministry of Education (our MEC - Ministério da Educação e Cultura), which have an average duration of 4 or 5 years.

    I hope some day you can do a video of how veganism and mental health problems can be related. Or how does veganism affect mental health, bc nowadays that everyone wants to be vegan, it's important to know what could happen before people decide to eat like that. I say this as a person who was a vegan for almost 3 years and I know veganism might've affect my mental health in a way or another.

    Just something nobody asked for: I’m so unbelievably grateful for my healthy, fully functioning lungs. I can’t imagine having trouble breathing, and I’m also grateful for flexibility and never feeling constricted and for my skin which I work so hard to keep healthy and aesthetically pleasing.

      RELATABLE. Like they were talking about "can you do that for the rest of your life?" and I think about that a lot when I try to start cutting out really bad foods for me, when I should just be thinking in terms of cutting BACK on, and not on having to check off every box for every little thing every single day.

    Very helpful video. I have a sensitive gut, but I'm not particularly mindful of what I eat because food has always just been a source of comfort for me to soothe stress. I guess I gravitate to the stuff that feels the most "filling" at the time, but sometimes that food (which is often pretty fatty and heavy, and loaded with salt) upsets my stomach and I spend more time than I'd like to admit on the toilet 😬. I would like to try shifting my focus to eating foods that leave my gut a bit happier, and me feeling lighter and more energetic. Thanks for the inspiration!
