I've been burned out for 1.5 years now, if not even longer but that's when I got my diagnosis and the first thing me and my therapist did was break down my weekly schedule completely and then slowly build it up again through time, starting with taking care of the dishes every day, and then vacuuming once a week, then meet a friend once a week. Just doing one thing at a time until it's not giving me anxiety and making me feel exhausted anymore, and create a more realistic life where I don't have to do everything, all the time. Last week I learned that turning my phone off every once in a while is really important as it's stressing me out so much that I constantly feel like I have to be online and be updated on everything. It's almost as if I'm doing two things at once all the time, keeping an eye on my phone and whatever the else I'm doing. Turn the phone off!!

I love when he says "Quit your fucking job" because I love the simplicity of that solution but it might not be practical. Kati herself said she used to work 3 jobs and still couldn't get by (it be like that in California) so it doesn't sound like she had a choice. But she made a key point: the reward needs to change. I can encourage myself when I get burnt out on school because it's temporary. But some people's situations seem to stretch indefinitely and they either have to find a way to adapt or alter the situation. And they do talk about that in the video.

I don't know. I've had depression and I think I have a burn out right now, and these two emotions are very different. When you're depressed, well, you're depressed and have suicidal thoughts, but when you're burned out it feels more like stress and worrying, and you feel extremely depressed but only when you're in the situation that made you burned out. I guess it's possible to feel burned out from life too..

One thing we can do this week is to say no. I just said no to three projects in a row. Mostly due to timelines. I'm booked solid over the next few days and I let them know I couldn't finish them by the time they're requesting. However, I could do them deliverable for early next week. What about people in countries where they have to work 60-80 hours a week at unfulfilling jobs, horrible spaces, not being respected or even seen by managers and only make a few dollars a day? (sweatshop like settings) These people have no other option but do those horrible jobs (and we, people in richer countries are allowing this to happen), they don't even have the option to be 'burn-out' and take a leave of absence, go on a holiday, go to therapy etc.? Can we also focus on those people, people who don't have it as well as the people in rich countries? Thank you.

I'd be interested in diving into burnout and how it can come about due to dealing with disabilities. It seems to be not uncommon that a lot of us go through a cycle of trudging on and then having a down of burnout about taking care of ourselves, because it really is a full time job for us. Unfortunately not many options as far as taking up different hours or new employment though. lol

It's validating to know that you can still do what you love to do, but change the approach and find ways to increase the reward to help avoid burnout and continue to be passionate about what you are doing.

For me, it really helped to know that we can suffer from burnout from things not necessarily job-related like being a stay at home mom or maybe even studying. Because there were times in my life when I was going through this and I wasn't working at that time. I had no idea why I was being so... emotional. Naturally, if the amygdala is enlarged, it'd make things like anger outbursts or even crying spells that much more common and it helps me understand myself better. Thanks Katie, really helped

What to do this week....when I'm feeling exhausted and telling myself that I have to do more, I'm going to give myself a minute to write down some accomplishments/achievements. Instead of always focusing on what's not done/what's left to do, I'm going to remind myself to see the things that did provide satisfaction and pride. I would be interested in hearing anyone's unique self care ideas though; my go-tos are walking my dog and reading fiction books.

Back when I used to volunteer at a rabbit rescue I was told that burnout is very common in the rescue world (and also that vets have a high rate of suicide). Seeing so many bad cases and animals dying despite your efforts, as well as the emotional effect of witnessing neglect and trying to educate ignorant/stubborn people. It all gets too much...but then you feel guilty for feeling that way because the animals need an avdvocate and continued support. It takes a lot of emotional and mental strength to be involved in that world.

I'm a SAHM struggling with ADHD, and anxiety and depression. I thought I was burnt out last summer, but it was really a worsening of my anxiety and prompted me to talk to my doctor about medication. Now I'm on Zoloft and feeling better, but I know that burnout stalks me and with it a worsening of my symptoms. Here's what I do:
    - Make a point of connecting with friends. With or without the kids. Just meeting for an hour at the park to chat while the kids run around can fuel the rest of the day.
    - Cut myself some slack and say yes to things that aren't mission critical. I'm trying to become ok with "good enough."
-Let my husband parent when he is home. I don't want to be the go-to for everything in the house. I want my kids to know that their father is just as capable as I am.

I've been thinking that I'm dealing with burnout right now. This video almost solidified a couple viewpoints that affirms what I thought. It was good to know that the symptoms of burnout and depression are similar because that's what I thought I was feeling, but felt that it wasn't depression. Also...my mind blew open when you talked about how we can feel guilty on the negative feelings, even when the positive feelings are a tangible thing. I've been getting many compliments on what I've done at my job, but don't take time to acknowledge probably because I'm viewing/nitpicking the negative out of it. The "i could've done this better" or "I need to work on this". That has been such a constant going on that it makes me feel better knowing that that is also a sign of burnout.

Those surgeons who organised a strike sound like brave strong people. It’s not easy to stand up to authority or try to change a way a society is structured when you know something is wrong. It’s easier to bow your head, do what you’re told, be a “good worker”, and suffer. This guy sounds like he has a balanced life. He works but isn’t overloaded.

I suffer from the exact things that you mentioned and I'm a third year medical student. unfortunately the attendance is compulsory in my country, so imagine having to go to classes everyday although you know you won't comprehend anything. i intended to ignore the situation for the upcoming three months -same like you, after exams end-. but I knew if the exams came while I'm in this state, it will be a matter of time for me to fail this year and i'd have to repeat it again and seriously that's alone pushed me to reach for help. month ago I booked an appointment to meet with a therapist and currently we're trying to work the situation out. I don't know yet if it's going to be effective or not but at least it's worth trying. have a nice day and if you could, you should seek a professional help.

I feel like burnout is a common occurrence I highschool because, for me personally, I usually put a lot of energy into competing assignment and project (which often results in a good grade), but since I don't really value my grades that much I don't get much of an immediate reward. Also I often hear my classmates talking about how they feel like the school schedules are too rigorous and don't really give them time to relax and take care of themselves. I also don't think, based on what my peers have told me, that when a teenagers expressed that they're tired to an adult, then the adult usually doesn't believe them.

Healing from burnout is so hard to me. It's a constant state that I should feel bad about myself for being dysfunctional member of society who has some special needs. My body doesn't accept the fact that I can relax and just rest for as long as it takes (I've worked hard to allow this luxury for myself). I've waked away from toxic environments but it's so strange when I don't hear that somebody judges me for not being productive, it gives me extra anxiety. Dunno how it will end for me but it surely be better someday!

I went through my deepest depression last fall into winter due to burnout, Ive mowed grass 6 seasons now and became foreman 3 seasons ago but for the 2020 season I decided to do the entire season solo because in 2019 my partner left the company. Naively I figured training a new person would burn me out! Plus I wanted the extra money and hours. Basically imagine 50,000 steps give or take every day 5 days a week, weed whipping/mowing businesses, residential (everything). a schedule of about 35 properties on repeat every single week from April to November. With varies stressful mechanical issues through the season that I also dealt with solo because I was so stubborn to ask for help. I also moved myself during this to a new place. The burnout started to happen so gradual but man it sucked literally loosing interest in literally everything and not knowing what was going on. I did it tho and am still treating it but it taught me so so much, still is. Brought to light so many past undealt with issues. Theres much more to the whole story but this was the basis of my burnout

I always thought I was never doing enough and after taking a break to step back. I realized how great I do have it and I am now seeking ways to really have a full life outside of work. Also, to actually enjoy the fruits of my labour which has paid off in ways I couldn't realize in the dread of another work day. So far, I am feeling a lot better now. Thank you for another great discussion Kati. It’s very comforting to know that professionals such as yourself and Dr. Lieberman are able to explain these issues so openly and simply. My thoughts are that feelings of burnout and depression are normal in our lives as humans. I think that what is so important is how each of us develop a sense of self awareness and instinctual confidence when we go thru those feelings, and it is so important that during that period, almost step outside of our body and mind to take an objective look at ourselves as it is happening. Then, we can see how it is possible to overcome it by acknowledging it, accepting that it is normal to feel that way, and gain perspective which is what will help us rid our ill thoughts. Almost like riding an ocean wave. We can survive it if we just believe that we are capable of handling it. And always knowing that we are not alone. Ever. 🙏❤️

Thank you for this, Katie! I've suffered repeated burnout since beginning a new career 8 years ago (software engineering). Heavy workloads and long hours. Studying in a programme without support for mature students and again with long hours. In some cases bad management. The contractor cycle, shifting between financial insecurity and periods without work and high demand and high pressure. And a lot of impostor syndrome, with recruiting agencies, colleagues, expectations that put upskilling and retraining onto my own efforts (outside of work), etc. I've now reached the point of thinking of canning it, going back to study a different new career, and just do software as a hobby thing, plus it gives more time for enjoyable hobbies (Photography, Languages).

I think burnout is more common than people realize. Especially in America, the truth is people spend more time working than doing anything else. Working is important and can be fulfilling but I think life should be more 50/50 if not 40/60 when it comes to work.
I also am really sad that so many jobs and professions are KNOWN to create burnout but there is little training and support for professionals going thru it! I think people in medical fields, people who do direct caring for others, therapists, social workers, police officers, military professionals, people who work in hospitals and nursing homes, teachers, even hair stylists need to have burnout be part of the orientation and there should be more support within companies to help.

The way I dealt with burnout from pre-existing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder [diagnosed at 13, I'm 31 now] and Major Depressive Disorder [diagnosed at 13, I'm 31 now] was to go on 12 months leave without pay...I no longer felt what I was doing as an accountant was meaningful...I'm 4 months in to my leave, but still feel burnt out and in the midst of an existential crisis. I take medication and have monthly therapy sessions with a psychologist, but still haven't felt any better...

Was wondering, can someone suffer from depression AND burnout? How can you tell the difference?

Currently reducing my burnout by simply living day to day and trying not to focus on the future too much because that's a great source of anxiety for me! But then again seeing the bigger picture also helps?? Also lots of naps and cuddles when I'm at home from work.

I've suffered from depression at times in my life especially as a teen and young adult when I had major breakdowns. A really toxic work environment in 2011 really messed me up though, and in general, the work I was doing burned me out over a course of 14 years, so now I'm trying to retrain into something less demanding.

I’m hoping in this series you discuss some lifestyle changes to help us manage our cortisol. I have done some reading on my own about adrenal fatigue which I think clinically make sense regarding burnout and I would be interested if you could touch on this in the series. For now I’m trying to add in more exercise.

Amazingly informative and the perfect amount of laughs Kati! Love listening to you interview others as you bring out the gold in a subject. Especially like the animations too, the conversation starters and homework. Love the editing styles and tips I am learning from you gurus! Wonder if DJ Sean will be animated?? Hahaha. Keep up the great work legends!!
Thanks for changing our world, our brains and our lives.
A series like this on trauma would be so helpful and needed around mental health circles and conversations.

I believe burnout is the chronic overuse of a certain area(s) of the brain. High levels of stress and trauma for long periods of time seem to have large alterations in mood and the ability to feel.

Great presentation. Thanks. Just came through a bout of burnout that I felt was related to having plateaued in my quest for self-improvement. That led to depression. After having congestive heart failure l was forced to re-evaluate my direction in life which surprisingly reduced my burnout and as a direct result got rid of my depression. Now I look forward to a renewed sense of direction with new vitality. Hope this message was helpful. Thanks again for your presentation.

The most interesting thing to me is that there is a psychological component and we could get help from a professional to reevaluate who we are, why we're doing things, and what we want now.

A lot of talk around Burnout seems to be focused around high energy/high stress jobs, but can it be from jobs that are monotonous? I work three jobs, all of which don't keep me busy throughout the day and the work hours stretch on forever. I have't slept well at all over the last several months, and I'm so dead tired and exhausted all the time. I don't have the energy to fully enjoy things that I used to do and I feel like I'm falling into a depression. Can you get burnout from working a job that DOESN'T keep you busy?

I think it's interesting. We don't often think about work-life balance like it is a subjective thing. For entrepreneurs, I think a lot of people get drawn to the lifestyle with the expectation that it will decrease their workload and reduce their stress but often find that the opposite is true.

Hi Kati , after listening to your conversation with Dr. Barry Lieberman , I learned many things and many of my feelings are real , from being a 24 / 7 caregiver for decades to all of a sudden just me , and scared of what or where my future lies.
I am not as young as I used to be , I can`t go back into the work force , but I have so much to give.
But in order to survive we need money , and I lack the social media skills to make it happen.
You have read a lot of my work , I almost have enough material for a book , but I have no idea how.
I reached out to someone , but they have yet to respond , I have tried many avenues to find the answers. I feel like I am burned out from trying ???
Can you get burned out by trying ? Thanks , Gary  XX

I don't even know what to do about this right now. I just had two days off and still woke up exhausted. I've been too exhausted to drive over to the doctor, wait in the waiting room, just to have another one not want to give me a referral to a psychologist (and prescribe me another pill which I doubt will give me more energy or rest). Too scared to quit my job, can't reduce my hours, and have to keep up with bills.

Its interesting to me how connected everything is in our bodies. Since my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms started 2 years ago I've been more susceptible to burnout. I think that my brain fatigues quicker.
As my RA has been treated, my burnout symptoms have lessened.

I think burnout is as much a societal problem as an individual one. It would be interesting to ascertain what the baseline norm of not being burnt out is, how many would fit that criteria? It’s clear that at times of recession, burnout will be an epidemic in some sections of society, The needs to survive as opposed to the tendencies to strive are maybe as prone, where the immediate and pressing needs of sufficiency are barely achieved or need constant repeated efforts to do so. Having some sense of possibility and choice are human needs and this for many is in scarce supply.

I would look up the general adaptation syndrome (GAS). It has to do with the stages of stress and how it impacts the body.

I think I have been experiencing burnout for the past year and it’s becoming very apparent this past week. I’m a fifth year college student ready to get out of college but unfortunately I’m not getting out very soon. Not only did I switch majors from music education to music performance and still planning on getting my masters in music therapy, I can’t take an insane amount of classes like the rest of my colleagues can. I do well with obtaining 12 credit hours a semester when I usually start out with 19. This past week, I haven’t been able to do my homework because I’m not motivated to. I have been telling a few friends that I want to drop out of the semester but they all told me not to do it. I’m trying to keep myself going but it’s only the middle of the semester and it’s only going to get worse from here.
