I recall exactly why New Horizons had such low user scores. At its release, many people were pissed that the game had multiplayer that was subpar at best. If you played as another user on the same system, you were limited in the activities you could partake in, and much of the gameplay was hindered. Even in Co-Op, other players were limited in their activities. As the owner of the island, you had full control over construction, but everyone else could just fund these projects and not start them. To users, having to buy another Switch during the pandemic to play the game as it was intended felt like a scam, and they review bombed it with thousands of 0/10s. This and the drip-feeder model the game eventually became combined to create the low user score on Metacritic
10:56 & 15:56 I keep thinking about this exact thing. There’s lots of video games that are generally agreed by people to not be good, but then you check the critic reviews and the game actually got decent scores. Like, what exactly happened?
Different group of people look for different elements in each game made. Friend of mine completely hates baldur's gate 3 for various reasons and doesn't understand how it got game of the year, yet I look at BG3 and completely understand how lol. Not all games are going to resonate with everyone.
My favourite Metacritic fact is how absolutely livid people get when they find out Soul Calibur for Dreamcast is the second highest game of all time, beaten only by Ocarina of Time with a 99 to SC's 98. People don't really know (or they're just mad at the fact that a Sega game or a fighting game that isn't Smash, the only fighting game they ever touch, could EVER get such praise) that Soul Calibur on Dreamcast alongside Tekken 3 on PS1 (which got a 96) were like... the two games that killed an entire medium, that being arcade games. They were the games that really went "okay, why bother even going to the arcade anymore, the home ports of these games are just objectively better in every way?"
Actually the 2nd highest rated game on metacritic is thps 2, but I think they took it off the “best games of all time” tab fsr. but yeah, Wild how soul calibur tops all smash games on there.
The worst thing about Sim City 2013 was not the online thing, the game was just an awful sim. Sims would live in random houses, go to random jobs, the maps were tiny and and and. The always one was just the cherry on top. Good thing Cities Skylines released shortly after.

Interesting scores/collab idea. An entire game around it. Well Scott it's called Crush, a PSP/3DS puzzle game. It's fun I recommend it (love PSP puzzle games). Alien Syndrome has an interesting design, never heard of or seen it till now but sounds alright for Wii. Sim City 2013/5 was just not a good game besides the internet connection it was a downgrade from 4. As a reboot it was not good so now Maxis (dead but alive under EA) milks the Sims 4 all the time. Same with Mario Galaxy Ratchet games had bigger planets then the smaller spheroids of Galaxy. Some have done so before. Lemmings, Tokobot, Ratchet Clank levels and Wonderful 101 have interesting using units to form bridges, attack, split, change formation and so on. It's really cool. Scaler or Dr Muto had transformations like Banjo and Odyssey as well their own way. Some games have different ways to approach ideas. Space Station Silicon Valley and another N64 game did better than the Donkey Kong 64 character barrel to swap characters in different ways. Boundary Break is great. Liked the localisation series too. Sad the Spyro 2 video didn't do what Crystal Fissure did with the above and below details of levels the low res and high res or items and no items or whatever thing. Reason I care about it as it's how like teleportation Ratchet Crack in Time had similar levels, different lighting and more for the player to experience aftermath, ongoing battle/past, and fixed version the player solved. An interesting thing of Insomniac game design worth mentioning. Very cool with a swimming in the air glitch to swim up to.
This was seriously one of the most fun collabs i got to do in a very long while Scott, thanks again for letting me on!

Critics are looking for different things than the users. Game Theory did an interesting analysis of the demographics of critics and such.
