    Hey everyone. I've been stuck around 100 - 110 bpm for a long time. That makes it really scary and difficult to add tempo, or even attempt practicing this. BUT! I've been consistently running this for about 10 minutes everyday for the last week. I just hit 120bpm after months and months of frustration and cowardice!! Just stick with it and practice it for a little bit EVERY day! I was not doing that and that was my problem. Best of luck folks

    I kept increasing up to 160, accepting there will be mistakes but trying to keep up the tempo anyways and watching for any unnecesary tension building up. Going back to 150 feels easier afterwards. Try it!

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx  3 года назад +6

      This is a very good "trick", and something that might not be obvious. Intuitively one might think "I can't even manage this slow speed, so why would I try even much faster?" I'm not a music teacher, but I've noticed that when I try to push my speed limits, it tends to remove unnecessary motions. The motions of playing fast are not the as playing slow but faster. This should be obvious when watching videos at different speeds.

    On guitar,
    This is very good for improving fright hand skill, improving some mix of sweeping plus alternate picking.

    good work to all !

    The key for any musician here is sing the head first:
    Ah & a 2,
    Ah & a 4,
    Ah & a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&,
    Ah, & a 2,
    Ah & a 4,
    Ah &a 2e&a 3e&a 4e& Ah
    e&a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a
    - 1 &a 2e&a 3e&a 4e&a
    1e&a 2e&a 3...... 4......
    Ah... 2 &....
    Then, hear it like a straight ahead jazz tune at 300bpm, instead of a fusion tune, with the step hh chick on the & of each beat to keep your time. Memorize the head, SLOWLY & get it to tempo. Then ignore the chart, concentrate on the time, let it flow - on auto pilot.
    Practice strings of three16th note phrases where the phrases begin on the "a" before each beat. Typical 3/4 jazzz motif stuff.

    Thx for posting this, it's a very old challenge for me (also).
    As you getting closer and closer to the original tempo it need to be increased less and less steps - I mean above 130 I should take -f.e.- 135, 140 then 143, 145, 147... etc, because getting harder and harder step by step.
    For first run I could take 120 safely, 130 was litl bit unstable, but the real challenge to jump to 140.

    How to fall on an accurate beat can often lead to instability and loss of beat When playing, which beat of the drum is the most important to listen to in order to achieve the correct rhythm😭

  • @CaliforniaBushman
    @CaliforniaBushman Год назад

    Been listening to this since 1988. Can scat it. Learing how to read drum charts finally (drummer, Weckl fan). Saw this in my random algorithm. Started trying to read it (getting through charts now) for 3 minutes slowly, without looking to see what it was. Then realized it was Got A Match 😆. I scat it in 16th notes. But like most Fast Bop, shouldn't it be actually written in 8th notes? Being on the gig the charts would be in 8ths (waste of paper).

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx  Год назад

      It's my transcription of how I heard the tune. To me it sounds like Weckl is playing a 150 bpm 1/16th groove, not 300 bpm 1/8th, and that's what my perception of the whole piece was based on. Later on I figured that jazz players would probably write it with 8th notes. I have no formal training in music, it's just what I do for fun. This video has surprisingly and unintentionally become somewhat popular.

    This is a pretty good effort! Practice-wise it makes a lot of sense. However, the song isn't actually 16th notes in 150 bpm, it's 8th notes in 300 bpm. You can clearly hear the quarter note pulse when Patitucci begins with the walking bass and the drums start playing the actual beat instead of just the accents.

      @@kylehan3934 Nice to hear that it can be fun for drummers as well! Unfortunately there's a small recording glitch in the second "verse" of the final 150bpm part in my video ... the screen capture software had a temporary hickup, but I didn't want to re-record anymore because it was already the nth attempt. I guess that by the time you're at 150bpm you can already play along with the actual record. :)

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx  4 года назад +1

      @@kylehan3934 I checked the videos you linked and now my head hurts, I didn't _really_ want to know how the drum part is played. ;) My drum part is only a fake mockup with a ghost snare hit at every 1/16th note, plus a few harder snare hits, hi-hat accents and kicks inserted here and there to mimic what's is on the record, on a generic make-believe level. :D Just enough to get some of the same vibes. But now that I saw how actual drummers try to repeat the drum part ... I respect Dave Weckl's drumming even more. All of the players on Chick Corea's records are on an absolutely insane level!
