5:25 as an embedded developer, I have to say thank you for appreciating stuff like this. Optimization based on different hardware is something that often goes unnoticed, but requires a good amount of thought and work to get correct. People generally only notice it when it's awfully done. Anyways, great video as always. I remember being awestruck when I saw coded arms for the first time back when the psp came out. I thought, wow, that's a portable console game? There were some games in here I didn't know about either. Thanks for the great list!
To this day I’ve still never played a handheld game as ambitious as Medal Of Honor Heros. I use to play the multiplayer back in the day soooo much. It supported up to 32 players in a single game which for 2008 was insane! I’m a proud Vita owner but the multiplayer games on the vita only support up to 8 players if you’re lucky. Even most console games to this day still don’t support up to 32 players in games besides a handful. I wish Medal Of Honor Heros was still able to be played online as those were some of the best handheld days to ever exist, and if anyone else ever played you know what I mean!
Oh man, I had King Kong on my psp, I was playing it with headphones in during class in high school, the principal came in, I tried to hide it, doing so the headphone came out and a loud roar bursted from my pocket lol it was totally obvious it came from me. I got my psp back at the end of the school day 😂
In quarantine out here in Utah. My wife is very sick, and may have the virus. We are waiting for her test results. Thank you so much for providing more content. We need things like this to keep us sane right now. So much respect, dude.
Medal of Honor Heroes was the shit back in the day. I remember playing ad-hock mp with my friend all the time. We would pick sniper rifles, snowy forest, and go at it for hours. Lots of fun.
That game made me quite popular in the high school cafeteria. People would even trade me food to play a round. I remember picking it up on my first trip to NYC. I loved how they gave the option to aim with the analog stick and move with the face buttons. Took some getting used to, but once you did it was FAR superior in terms of aiming control for an FPS on PSP. I played it online all the time.
The Dreamcast, I think, actually solved the 1 thumbstick problem rather well. Having you move and strafe with the facebuttons and looking with the analogstick. Eventhough the stick was on you left hand, it worked really well in my opinion.
Great video! I know it's dedicated to First Person shooters but seeing so many of these games reminded me of Resistance: Retribution. It's a TPS, with great visuals and amazing gameplay. You get a full console experience on the handheld, one of my favorite PSP games.
Jeez people still make videos for such an old handheld? I was looking for some games to buy for my PSP and was expecting a really old crappy video. Top-notch quality though, I appreciate the reviews.
I was super impressed by the SOCOM series. Those games had not only great multiplayer and controls, but also you could interact with the forums and community just via the game's UI, which was really impressive.
In a modded PSVita, you can map these funky button layout in the right analog stick, and it does feel awesome. It almost feel like it was developed for it.
If I remember correctly, some FPS games on PSP had alternate control schemes that allowed you to use the face buttons for movement and the analog stick for aiming. It seems backwards but you get used to it very fast. It would end up working much better and smoother than the stick for movement and face buttons for aiming.
The unofficial Doom and Quake ports are also awesome on the PSP. I use the symbol buttons to move forward and back and for strafing, and the shoulder buttons to shoot and jump. D-pad for weapon change etc. Works great!
@referral madness You don't actually need to jailbreak to run emulators on iphone, you just need some dodgy "company certifications" that enable you to run "internal company apps". All the emulators work perfectly fine and its very easy.
Quarantine is going fine. I already worked from home making videos, so not much has changed other than I can't see anybody other than my wife. Thankfully we are not driving each other crazy...yet. ;)
The only FPS I have on handheld systems is Killzone: Mercenary for the Vita, a great game. But I think the Medal of Honor games don't look too bad as well. I guess I'll put them on my list. Thank you, Jesus.
I loved Coded Arms, and I still have my copy. I actually bought it again digitally to play on my vita, and it runs pretty well there. The second analog stick can be mapped to the face buttons, so the gameplay is better. I would disagree that the sequel was better though, I preferred the first one over the second one. There just wasn't as much depth, in my opinion, to the second one. I spent so much time collecting all of the weapons and armor upgrades in Coded Arms, and I played up to level 160 in the infinity level to max out every weapon. I just didn't feel like I wanted to keep laying the same levels on Contagion once I was done with it. Yeah, the gameplay was repetitive on the first one, but the procedurally generated levels made it a different experience every time. I still go back to it occasionally when I want to play something nostalgic.
Awesome video Jason! I love that you still show love to the PSP in 2020. It's still my favourite handheld. I just picked up Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Predator this week for mine and cant wait to get stuck in
I really like that almost all the FPS devs provided an option to mirror the controls, letting the player aim with the left analog stick. This is how I played FPSes on this whenever possible.
I love it when you do PSP videos because it reminds me to bust out the PSP and actually play some PSP games on it (the rest of the time my PSP 1000 is my go-to device for emulation).
Sweet vid, keep 'em coming. Anyhow, I'm merely surprised he didn't mention the ability to play an assortment of these PSP FPS titles on the VITA with "improved" controls via the dual analog sticks. In fact, a few other individuals also commented on this. It should be noted that games like Battlefront 2 and Resistance: Retribution (for example) can be downloaded onto the VITA, and then one can choose to reconfigure the controls to take advantage of this particular handheld's capabilities if so inclined. Trust me, it makes a world of difference and allows these titles to be played the way they're intended to be played - without the PSP's limitations. Even still, the PSP is a fantastic device and I might have to find a copy of 'Coded Arms' one of these days. Sheesh, I've never even heard of it.

Medal of Honor Heroes without a doubt the best all around FPS. I remember getting this when it came out. It had 32 player online deathmatch. Just incredible! I played it a ton. The levels were huge too. And its one of the only FPS be it PC, console, handheld I was really good at on leaderboards. Was quite proud of my skill level at it lol. Sucks the servers are no more but great memories of it. The Socom 16 player online mplayer was also great around when the PSP first came out but it was amazing that anyone could go 32.
Aw, bless you dude. That's one of the things I love about the PSP/PS Vita the communities for online were super tight and fun to play with. Medal Of Honour really nailed it on PSP, went back to the days where it was one of the best FPS franchises. The leaderboards maybe down but the love for FPS on sony's consoles never died Killzone Mercenaries for Vita managed to hold out a constantly dedicated player base until just last year and so did Black Ops declassified.
That's what sucks about this new pay-to-play online console fee (fuck you xbox, thanks for nothing!), they can yank the servers when ever they want. You can't go back and revisit old online games. It's total b.s. But they expect you to keep paying "to connect". Such a scam, really. I went straight to PC just for this reason alone. Consoles are only good for campaigns and free to play games like Fortnite, etc. Although most of those F2P games are better on PC. The online fee ruined the console experience.
Battlefront 2 plays amazing on the Vita. I got the digital version recently and have been having a blast. You can remap the right analog to give it a better fps feeling.
I was too poor to own a PSP back in the day but now I emulate so many games on my PSclassic. These scale up and perform great on a tv and keymapping to dual analoge makes it so much better.

You described everything about the tachikoma except the fact that they have the shape of a tarantula lol
Love your psp vids man keep them coming!

Psp is still the damn best handheld I ever had, and still works!
I bought COD:Black Ops Declassified for Vita($15) a few months ago from gamestop. It still had a download code for COD:Roads to Victory in it and it still worked!
Call of Duty: Road to Victory was my go-to PSP game back in the day alongside the Battlefront games. I actually wore out my CoD UMD, I played it so much. Lol.
