강북삼성병원은 서울의 도심 중심에 위치하고 부지 내 경교장, 부지 인근에 경희궁, 서울역사박물관이라는 문화재로 둘러 쌓여있어, 건축적 입지로서는 매력적인 문화적, 지리적 환경요소를 가지고 있지만 동시에 공간적 확장에 한계도 가지는 부지이다. 또한 1960년대 고려병원부터 시작하여 의료시설의 확장이 필요할 때마다 증축이 이루어졌기에, 노후화된 시설과 복잡한 환자 이동 동선, 환자를 위한 부족한 치유환경과 혼잡한 주차환경을 강북삼성병원이 가진 매력적인 환경요소와 결합하여 어떻게 새롭게 연계하고 해결할 것 인가에 대한 고민으로부터 시작되었다.
Located in the center of downtown Seoul, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital is surrounded by cultural properties such as Gyeonggyojang on the site and Gyeonghuigung and Seoul History Museum near the site, displaying environmental elements that are culturally and geographically appealing in terms of the building location. However, at the same time, there is a limit to spatial expansion. It started as Goryeo Hospital in the 1960s and underwent additional extensions whenever it needed an expansion of medical facilities. Therefore, the project began by carefully thinking about how to combine, newly connect, and resolve the issues of dilapidated facilities, complicated circulation and insufficient healing environment for patients, and congested parking environment with the charming environmental elements that Kangbuk Samsung Hospital holds.
