- Kim So-hyang, known mononymously as Sohyang, is a South Korean singer-songwriter born on April 5, 1978¹². She has been dubbed by the international media as the "Korean Mariah Carey" due to her impressive vocal skills¹². Sohyang's goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. Sohyang is also an author of fiction and has published multiple fantasy novels since 2013¹⁴⁹. The most well-known of them are "Crystal Castle" and "Anaxion". She made her debut in 1996 with the song "Mr." (선생님)¹. She was practicing in a recording studio when composer Jo Hwan-gon heard her singing and asked her to record a song with him¹. After being tested by him, Sohyang released her first single and then went on a tour with Jo Hwan-gon, participating in many concerts and musical performances. She joined her husband's family band "POS" and released several Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) albums¹. Sohyang became one of the most popular and influential CCM singers in Korea¹. She has held concerts in around 50 countries. In 2014, she became the first non-American artist to sing the American national anthem at an NBA game¹¹⁴. She achieved further fame when she sang with the American gospel musician Kirk Franklin.

I loved Whitney, her voice was certainly one of the best female voices I have ever heard in a relatively long life. But So Hyang, to me, has no equal. It is her ability to sing any genre of music (I haven't heard country yet, lol) and deliver those different genre's at their pinnacle, with nearly or complete perfection, that seems so impossible. If she has less range (than very very few) she delivers more with her control, flexibility, power and feeling. She certainly is one of the greatest with her mixed voice. And her soulfulness and authenticity is amazing. I have never heard a singer with such perfect pitch in live performances, over and over again. She captures her audience and she delivers amazement time after time. I watch reactions from voice experts and they mostly just shake their heads in amazement. Many are reduced to tears. Her performances are often used as examples of how to sing in a technical way, with the caveat, 'Don't expect to sing quite this good'. Ha ha. Thanks for the reaction!

Here is what David Foster had to say about Sohyang in an interview with Naver on December 10, 2018, only a week after doing eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club.
“I wanted to meet her very much, and I am happy to have collaborated in putting together a concert. Here is how I got to know about Sohyang. Oprah Winfrey introduced me to 'a stunningly amazing singer whose video is a must watch.' I fell in love at once with Sohyang's first video I watched on RUclips, 'I Have Nothing.' It was thrilling, and I searched to listen to most of her other songs as well. I have wanted to meet her for a long time. She is one of the top divas I've come across."
David Foster didn't hold back praises. "Her voice is very beautiful and overwhelming, and I found her every performance to be emotionally moving and amazing. Moving forward, I want to collaborate again!"

Actually, it was Whitney Houston's former manager who discovered Sohyang singing "I Have Nothing" on RUclips and showed her to Oprah, who showed her to David Foster. Foster, of course, penned the song and produced it for Whitney Houston.

Even the opening ’softer’ part of the song cannot be replicated by any singer to the extent of the precise pitch balanced air and chords closure, emotions and interpretation of the song. Thank you for your sincere reaction even at the face of being cancelled by Whitney fans… try reacting to WH’s more recent live performance of this song e.g. brazil concert and you’ll see exactly what i mean. WH could only muster a safe and easy version of this song live and could or would only sing this at full chest + head voice for upper registers and nothing in between and would take so much time in between verses some would argue for theatrical effects but with any experience singing live you know what’s really happening. My two cents worth…

I was a die hard WH stan myself until she became an addict and as my delusions of her as someone who sang for her audience broke. Taking care of ones voice as a singer who respects her audience is the only thing a singer needs to do and when you do more drugs then taking care of yourself you lose respect. 100+ performances freestyling? And not keeping to the original score… and just cruising through life and drugs as you know you have millions of die hard fans like me not caring? jeez anyone can do that! So no. I do know about WH and I do miss the WH who first started out and I am devastated that she took her life away and i hate saying what i said about her but when i see other artists who put their heart and soul to a WH (David Foster) song and seems more respectful for the song then herself then i do opine. @@TheSensationalOne iconic yes but her live performance of the song which is supposed to be a remarkably difficult song to muster with skills and emotion was in my views carried out with only glamor and swag (freestyling). Look anyone who’s ever sang before know that chest + head voice for upper registers is not taxing the voice at all and needs minimal skills to manage so imagine going to a WH concert full of hope that you’ll be listening to the diva of the century sing and she gives you some whooooty head voice runs???? I’d go back and ask for a refund. That’s not respecting the audience nor the song at all.
@@TheSensationalOne I’ve performed in my days before and i know what’s expected of a singer and what to do to ‘wing it’. When i started out she was iconic and it was my dreams of becoming just like her but my original post 1. Was to thank the reactor for being courageous by saying something about Sohyang’s performance being better or on par with WH’s live performance and 2. WH’s more recent (before she passed away) performances weren’t as visceral or emotional and to the original score of the song and compare it to the brazil concert. It’s not a bashing of WH but a comparison of a performance that I FELT was exactly or close to the intent of DF and one of the original artist that I FELT just skimmed the edges and sacrificed the song for personal glory. That’s all.
