- This is the Ukulele Orchestra's version of Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag' (Trivial detail: they once performed this song with Wheetus themselves in Bangor, North Wales).
On Tuesday 18th August 2009, with every seat and all standing room occupied, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain played to a sold-out Royal Albert Hall in London, with over 6000 audience members, and well over 1000 of them bringing ukuleles to join in with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
This clip is taken from their DVD "Prom Night", The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain Live at the Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms 2009, made from filming on the night.
The music played is:
Puffin Billy (Edmund White, Great British Light Music Classic)
Anarchy in the UK (The Sex Pistols)
Ride of the Valkyries (Richard Wagner)
Silver Machine (Hawkwind)
Life on Mars (David Bowie)
Thunderball (James Bond / John Barry)
Teenage Dirtbag (Wheatus)
Danse Macabre (Camille Saint-Saëns)
Jerusalem (William Blake and Hubert Parry)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
Ode to Joy (A fragment of Beethoven arranged for 1008 ukuleles)
Pinball Wizard (The Who)
The Dambusters March (Eric Coates)
Melange (which reveals how all the key rock songs are variants of one theme)
Wuthering Heights (Kate Bush)

This is so good, can't believe I'm seeing it for the first time in 2024. Amazing!
I have to listen to this at least once a week or I go into withdrawal.
Mary Kay Thompson absolutely!
get it xx
are you still doing it? :D
I'm now up to once a day. And needing more.
So True! Same here!!
Hester’s voice could have been heard in a tavern in seventeenth century England. It’s timeless...
That is so spot on; absolutely!
This video could be titled 'How I fell in love with Hester'
its actually a seventeenth century English folk song i have you know😑
It was
The way she sings reminds me a bit of Maddy Prior.
you start listening to one song and then it's 2 hours. Love them!
Haha I did the same. Lost a morning but worth it
OMG....Ain't that the truth!!.....I love music!!
It's 2022, and past 3am, why am I still up?
Oh, that's right, I just discovered this excellent Orchestra!
Longer than that!
One of the saving graces of the pandemic - finding this glorious band!
Who is still watching this 12 years later?
Yes
Me and I have just tickets to see them next year - WOOHOO
Me..
Me. It’s brilliant!😄
Me ! Longer than 12 years !
I am addicted to this song, this chick has a great voice, the whole lot of this is terrific..
Love it when they all sing “dirtbag!” with English accents. Cracks me up every time. This is a wonderful cover of a great song. Props to all.
As an American who LOVED this song as a teenager, MAD RESPECT to these people. They got TONS OF TALENT and they deserve props. Hahahaha, I just never figured some older British people would know this song.
It’s an older song nowadays 🤣
She's adorable What a nice voice! She seems like someone you'd just like to be around. Lovely take on a song.
You do realise that only 1000 people have been watching this throughout the years, at about 3000 times each.
Amazing. They take a clever grunge song and with ingenuity, balls (and a great voice) turn it into a medieval ballad with depth, emotion and class. I love these people!
Dan Crosby
This is outstanding, but my heart belongs to Silver Machine.
Me too! ❤
@@baskervillebee6097 Silver Machine is pretty damn epic it has to be said.
A man that worked at the hospital helped me through a really hard procedure by playing these guys to me! Thanks Jeff
They can do anything. And they never do anything badly. Not even if they tried to. Thank the universe that there are committed musicians like these who actually bother to express their ability. Major thumbs up to them.
Ten years on and still as fresh as a daisy 💛
Listening to ukulele orchestra performing a cover from wheatus of a song talking about iron maiden is priceless!
awesome
Amazing
Her reddening face when she has to say dick and ass just adds to the whole.
It's been years since I first listened to this cover and it's still one of the loveliest covers I've ever heard.
Props for no cencor too :)
It really is
Moves me to tears, it really does: incredibly touching and beautiful arrangement and performance.
I know your comment is a year old, but I just found this cover, and you're right, it is really good. Another good one is on the Post Modern Jukebox channel, check it out you might really like that one too
To hear this version of Teenage Dirtbag shows what a great song it is. The Orchestra are paying respect to an all time classic. Great vocals.
A great cover can bring out something special that's not immediately obvious in a song
I was there ! And it was brilliant ! Shame on the BBC for not broadcasting this on the tv, only radio. We all waved our ukuleles in the air at the end of all playing our little piece of Bach together.
Good thing BBC has no control over RUclips!
I’m betting that Hester could sing the road map and it would be excellent.
Many is the shite day at work that I've had lately, but today plumbed new depths. Then I had an alcoholic beverage or several, and then I listened to this. I won't begin to suggest that it solved anything, but I do now feel much better.
I listen to this too. It helps sooth the internal beast.
I’m with you bro
I just read this and thought I already commented 🤣👌🏼
Feeling better is essential as well!
Life can be so beautiful when something so simplistic as this video(certainly not suggesting that what the musicians done was simplistic) can shift your mood. Hope you're beating those demons, my friend
Just for all you non North American people. The reference to the boyfriend driving an IROC. That is a version of the the Chevrolet Camaro Z28. It was offered for a few years as the top line offering of that model. IROC was a racing series that placed top drivers from a wide variety of racing sanctioning bodies in a season of competition in identical Camaro race cars. The uke band is great!
IROC is an acronym.
I knew that. I'm British. I'm also subscribed to the Curious Cars channel here on RUclips. ;-)
Hester - probably the most beautiful ukulele player in the world.
NO,. Definitely the most beautiful
They are all beautiful.
At least the most beautiful voice. Most beautiful most certainly goes to hawaii... Taimane or Honoko.
Man, that ascending scale in the pre-chorus is just flat out perfect
Agreed, it’s just beautiful
I remember a time during pandemic (because it feels like it's been going on for ages) that I would wake up and even before opening my eyes properly, I would open this (and the mash-ups) on my phone, and my goodness, they would really fill me up with energy, with joy, and I could get up a happy, hopeful person. Since we're basically back to where we were back in March, I'm back here as well. Thank you for existing, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain!
A little pedantic, but yes, some seats at the Albert Hall are never for sale. It remains true that all available seats and standing room was occupied. There was not a ticket left for sale and people were (unfortunately) turned away at the door.
A lot of seats at albert Hall are held by debenture holders from those old 'english' families who funded the building and have free tickets forever, for every single concert/event at venue. My old employer was lucky enough to be donated 4 box tickets on the death of a debenture holder for us to use for charitable purposes
@@darrenmarquis8487 ah, I was wondering why some seats were empty, that's really interesting, thanks for sharing
I saw them in concert today in Vienna! Fabulous! Funny, versatile, very british in a good way and most important great and dedicated musicians!!
❤❤❤
Moves me to tears - I'm a big softie, but in my defence this is a lovely arrangement and performance.
Same here. I'm a grown man, what's wrong with me???
@@esarempee same. because we are old (43 here) and once were young.
@@Dominik-jv5vm We absolutely were. And we still remember.
How can you not love Hester.....and her voice, and the harmonies are just superb. And the ukules are also performing the drum rhythm. Just brilliant. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
On the contrary Jack - it will strike a chord with many a teenager. It's in the teenage years self doubt, insecurity and even self loathing are only ever a short distance away. Also, bear in mind it it's also a song about the redemptive power of love, of acceptance - our hero is at the prom, lonely, dispirited, feeling 'like mould' when the object of his longing and affection approaches and lo and behold, she is just like him, he's found someone who accepts him for what he is. It's uplifting!
Except in the band's official video, the whole part about the prom and Noelle asking him to an Iron Maiden concert is just a dream and our poor hero doesn't get the girl. :-(
@@mandolinic From what I recall, the song's writer was sent to an all-boys school after a murder in his home town in the mid-1980s, so he didn't get to have a "normal" high school experience and was in his late 20s when this was first recorded.
@@NotKyleChicago Thanks for the additional info.
This is just plain beautiful!
Seen the Ukes so many times since listening to them at a Folk club in Walthamstow over 20 years ago, still my favourite live act, and this track one of the best, they are always brilliant, never disapoint Terry Cove
It's a darn shame you can't "like" this more than once 😉👍❤️
What a fantastic voice this lady has. ....And singer
Pure class, makes me smile every time! Hope the band Wheatus have seen it.
If you read the notes under the video, your question's answered :) ".....This is the Ukulele Orchestra's version of Wheatus' 'Teenage Dirtbag' (Trivial detail: they once performed this song with Wheetus themselves in Bangor, North Wales).... "
I love Hester❤️
one of the most original covers i've ever heard!
You made this song even more nostalgic, which was hard to imagine
Upon discovering offerings from Ukelele Orchestra, the world feels a better place !!
I'm across the BIG POND!! These instrumentals and currently vocals are just great!
Me: (sreaming)CUZ IMM JUST A TEEEEENGAGE DIRT BAG BABY
her: (calmly) becase I am just a teenage dirtbag baby
2 like that's biggest I've ever had thanks
Utterly brilliant, you always leave their concerts with a huge smile on your face.-
These guys are incredible. Being playing the ukulele since I was 8 or 9, and these are the people I look up to.
Music is music, and this is as good as it gets!
I've got three words: This is awesome!
Your music is now an essential to each day,it fills me with joy and makes me laugh and smile and occasionally shed a tear. All in a good way.
Every time they do something new I can't believe how great they achieve it, who would have thought they would do Teenage Dirtbag, wonderful
Love the UKOOGB, Love the singer, Love the song...
What a beautiful woman and what a great voice and what a wonderful orchestra.
And did I mentioned what a wunderful women?
I love their take on the songs they play. Always makes me smile.
Obsessed with this song
However shit my day might have been, these guys invariably put a smile on my face... Thank you for your existence!
LOVE her voice! She does the chorus well!
This is... absolutely hilarious. Not in a bad way, mind you. It's just really funny to see all of these classy, sophisticated-looking adults play one of the most inane teenager anthems ever written.
And it is glorious.
After listening to the lyrics and finally understanding them (I love how the UOGB accomplishes that with so many songs) I would dispute the “inane” part.
But yeah, heartily agree on the rest.
@@gabitamiravideos Yeah, I think they might have been looking for "whimsical".
I agree the Ukuleles make an this song just make it too funny especially with how the lyrics don't match what they playing
Everyone's been a teenager once. Chances are they've also related to it lol.
To be fair, the song was written for a film and I feel sorry for the band, they had a film studio pissing around with what they were and weren’t allowed to put in the song. Movie studio folk can be total dicks!
Beautiful, lovely, fantastic, makes my eyes moist..
Never thought this song could move me almost to tears - I'm in love!
ruclips.net/video/3cOhNdlKwoc/видео.html this version might!
Same here, Hester is soooo talented.
Hester has that effect on people (not that I'm at all affected by her charms myself, oh no)
Timeless lyric, proven so by transposing from the key of young grunge into the key of old uke.
See these guys live last night and they played this! Still as good as ever!
Yes, I keep coming back to this time and time again - it's so endearing. Rosie, Walthamstow
I love this band, and I *particularly* love this version of Teenage Dirtbag, which I think is better than the original! Well done to the people who wrote it, and well done to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain for being awesome, I have been to see you three times and hope to keep doing so forever!
Hey bigblockofcheese search for Post Modern jukebox for their version of teenage dirtbag ,covered by Jax. Soooo cooool!!
@@tomcline5631 That is cool - thanks! I saw PMJ in London in 2015 at the Shepherds Bush Empire, they were fantastic.
I've only recently discovered this song via Reb Day's cover in a stairwell. I like the versions that aren't "screamo" for the chorus portion.
I discovered this song through the Ukulele Orchestra, so I went and listened to the official versions, and I like this one best!
I agree, I love her voice. I wish I could see this live.
Brilliant. Especially the control in delivery. Thanks for posting
I noticed Hester quite a long time ago, love her composure and this song really is a hit. I recently bought her album on iTunes Store for more of her voice.
What's it called?
At least you could smile
This is pure gold!
This is quite possibly their best piece ever, though it's a tough choice... I emailed them today asking if they can pleeeeaaasee come and play in Limoges, France next year. Love them to bits.
Her: So... This is for all the teenage ukulele players out there
Me: OH MY GOSH! SHOUT OUT! HOLLAAA
Just listened to and watched this again - it is simply wonderful!
You are an absolute joy , thank you
2019 and I am still loving this.
Never gets old. Love it.
Been to see them a couple of times. They are great!
This never gets old. Great! This and Smells like Teen Spirit are my favourites.
Simply brilliant!
THIS IS GLORIOUS thank you for posting this.
Turns the song right round and into something very special. Wonderful. Clever.
We are so lucky ,music & words ,enough to make you smile and this does it ,in boatloads ,thank you ,you clever people
This beautiful song almost breaks my heart. Guess we are all once this narrator of this song.
yupp...., Bravool.memang anda dan yg lain hebat.
Then you must listen to "Creep" as done by Scary Pockets. It'a another champion low self-esteem song.
I could listen to you guys all day
Why has this just appeared in my feed after 10yrs. One of my favourite songs, made me smile and it was done brilliantly. 👏
Brilliant clip of a truly fantastic group.
Amazing sounds & very,very enjoyable.
What a fantastic arrangement, full of emotional content.
so good. thank you for this.
This is so wonderful and life affirming.
My dad got a ukulele back in the 1950's and when I was a little kid he used to play silly little tunes on it and I thought it was a toy. I have officially been SCHOOLED!
Wow! Wow! Just....Wow!
This is on a loop. It’s so lovely.
Brings me to tears every time.
Just heard of the passing of Kitty Lux. Prayers for her friends and family.
This is the song that made me take up the ukulele. Thank you.
Just watched this yet again, awesome!
I got chills :)
They're multiplying
So refreshing to see and hear this. Quite emotional :)
