  • Nepal is world famous for its breathtaking landscape, its high mountains and snow-covered peaks. It attracts tourists from all over the world, many of them taking part in mountaineering expeditions. As if that wasn’t risky enough, more than 700 people have lost their lives in deadly plane crashes in Nepal over the past three decades. What’s behind this poor air safety record? To get some answers to this question, DW reporter Zobaer Ahmed spoke to experts, victims’ relatives and a representative of the country’s civil aviation authority.

I am from Nepal, and our biggest problem here is corruption. I lost a good friend of mine during the Sita Air Flight 601 crash in 2013 due to overload. None of the airlines operator, the owners, and the Airport workers have been held accountable yet because these airlines owners are well connected.

Yeti airlines is currently doing reputation damage control by paying social media influencers to fly with them and post on their stories. The pilot asked the female co pilot to lower the flag to 30 degree from 15 degree but instead of flag the co pilot pulled the condition lever which is next to flag lever. The condition level turns off fuel supplies to engine in case of fire. Unfortunately as the engine had no fuel supply they couldn't generate lift and the plane stalled.

Majority of aircrash are due to pilot's negligence. Terrain is difficult and weather is unpredictable, pilot's miscalculations in those time's have caused the majority of crashes . Newer aircrafts won't help , what Nepal needs is radars . Two international aircrafts crashed at hills during approach in TIA , Kathmandu but after the radars were kept there hasn't been an accident of that nature . Corruption , Negligence is also responsible for many crashes but always blaming it on corruption is not the answer .

I'm done flying domestically in Nepal (I visit at least once a year for an extended period). I never thought such a crash could happen in Pokhara (and let's face it, it was most likely pilot error that the blades were in the "feathered" position providing no torque at all).

    • @youngeshmoney
      @youngeshmoney Год назад +2

Torque doesn't come from the propeller blades, it comes from the engine. You meant to say "thrust". It was probably pilot error like you said. It doesn't make sense that the props would be feathered and the engines pulled all the way back to idle speed. "Feathering" propellers in the air is done when the engines fail, to reduce drag. It's weird that the report says the engines were producing 0% torque, yet also say that the engine was idling. If the engine is idling it cannot possibly be 0% torque. It just smells fishy.

Yeah, it has fucking high mountains with runways where generally runways shouldn't even be, treacherous weather, plus it's one of the poorest countries of the world and quite corrupt too, so maintenance , procedures and pilot training are probably not up to western standards. The perfect storm. When I traveled back from Kathmandu to Germany 10 years ago, they didn't even seriously control the luggage. They ran it through the scanner but didn't even look at the images.

    It’s /YETI Airlines/ and /TARA Air/.
Now besides that, wouldn’t airlines have an own interest in a safe operation?
Ever crash would cost them business I would assume.
I personally would not fly in Nepal, not even to Lukla where the other option appears to be a days long trekking trip.

Expecting private businesses to put anything above profits is a fool's errand. What is the primary objective of a private business/company? To make money, to profit and benefit the owners and shareholders financially. To that end, how can anyone expect the companies to then put safety, or anything else for that matter, above making money? If the people at the top think they can get away with something, don't think for one second that they would not cut a corner just to make an extra buck. This is, sadly, the world that we live in.

All say planes are old, it's brand new only 15 years. Most crashes in this part of world are due to pilot error or CFIT. There are very few crashes involving failure regarding maintainance and old planes. Even US marines crashed their helicopter here during rescue.

I've been there in 2011 flying into Lukla on the last of a 4 leg flight . I make A220 wings and have worked in the Aerospace industry for over 10 years . The plane we travelled back on from Lukla to Kathmandu sadly crashed several months later into a mountainside killing all on board . This is my opinion, Nepal is well behind safety and and maintenance standards of the Western world and what I can glean ? Very few true follow ups of crash investigations .

Most of the highly skilled aeronautical engineers get recruited by CAAN (civil aviation authority of Nepal) for regular airplane checkups but due to good money offered by private airlines they get transferred to private players so the engineers left at CAAN are not really qualified, paid less, some don't even have science background. Again, these less qualified "engineers" are offered hefty money by private airlines to clear their airplane for flying. the cycle continues.

No sir not engine failure, but a unbelievable mistake from the captain.
Lady first officer called "flaps 30" during landing approach and the captain
pulled the prop feather lever instead of the flaps lever stalling the plane.

Nepal’s aviation safety is poor. Most of the conclusions in crash investigations blame the dead pilots (human errors). I see a conspiracy in this type of conclusions, making a shield to protect the aircraft manufacturers from their responsibilities. I can see this and several RUclips videos already making a background for that. Some videos have already started promoting theory of human error in the recent Yeti airlines ATR-72 crash, a premise to favor the European aircraft manufacturers.
