    An idea...leave the backhoe high above the lumber deck with ropes and tackle attached. By wrapping the rope around the log you could lift and spin the log.

    Liz and Mike, you have been adapting and overcoming all obstacles throughout your build and that is the most important trait to live a successful life. I do love watching milling work and you two are becoming masters at that as well. It is a joy to watch how you two work so well together to accomplish the end goal. Free shiplap, it doesn't get any better than that. Great job guys.

    I bought a harbor freight mill at an auction 12 years ago for $250. It had a blown engine on it so I bought a 16 HP engine from H-F and it has been cutting great since. It has enough bed to cut 24 foot logs. For a basic saw mill they can't be beat.

    Your videos are fun to watch, your successes and failures, and your perseverance. Finding someone to sharpen blades is easy or impossible depending on where you live. If there is a large milling industry in your area and they use band saws it should be accessible. It isn't rocket science so it might be feasible and cheaper to learn how to do it yourself. Lubricating the blade seems to be something a lot of young millers struggle against. It really increases the life span of the blade, and increases the efficiency of the mill. Most people use diesel for pine but there are other formulas. Thank you for the video.

  • @Frankreddy62
    @Frankreddy62 2 года назад

    Great job guys. I'm impressed. 2 Suggestions i want to make. Keep your logs clean and free of as much dirt and pebbles as possible. Dirt will dull those blades faster than you think. Use a stiff brush to clean the bark or even use an axe to remove the bark where possible. 2nd. Use some soapy water to cool the blade as you cut. The blade gets very hot and will stretch over time. When you finish cutting for the day, loosen the blade tension to prevent stretching over time.
    Keep up the great work. Stay safe.

    From a 5+ year HF saw mill owner, yes extend the mill ASAP! So many 10'/12' logs missed.
    I weighed the difference between buying another 6' extension from HF and just purchasing the steel rails and scrap I-beam for the bunks.
    I made the WRONG decision by buying an extension. Why? You have a 12' bed already, but you can't cut 10' boards...without some fancy footwork. Same is true at the next level with stock bed extensions--with 18' of stock bed you cannot cut 16' lumber. And YES, you will want to.
    I welded an 18" fabbed extension onto the extension I bought. It would have been less expensive to just fab a 7'6" extension, with no wait.
    I found scrap I-beams that could have been used for bunk. Split 1 20' stick of angle and you have both rails plus some--careful, the stock rails are 5/16" thick angle...a weird, not usually stocked thickness.
    Y'all appear to be doing great!!! On those 24" logs it takes some extra work, but one thing you can do to give you a FULL cut is to remove the handlebar. I temporarily remove the handle bar for larger logs and just tiewrap it to the upright.
    Those large logs tend to make good lumber. The gap between the closest points of the throat are 20", but I can saw 24" logs by making two extra turns of the log.
    Really nice to see y'all working as a team.

    Sawing With Sandy is a great RUclipsr who goes over how to sharpen saw blades.

  • @ringerson4x4
    @ringerson4x4 2 года назад

    That’s why I always start with the big end of the log toward the blade instead of the small end. I know, every video on RUclips says to do it the way you did it in this video. But this is a real pain dealing with the saw head 2/3rds of the way through a cut and now your stuck. I would rather not be able to start a cut than get stuck like that. I have been stuck similar to what happened here, but not from size diameter but length. I wasn’t paying attention and placed a16’ log to far away from my blade and ran out of track about 6 inches from the end of my log. My fix was the same as yours, mostly. I wedged the slab up so I could back up my blade enough to cut the slab off with a saw like you did but didn’t knock my blade off. Slid my log back, then finished the cut. The other reason I cut the big end first is smaller slabs, I don’t want to deal with 300 pound slabs alone, I want to be able to just toss them aside easily by hand. I don’t need to make a cant in just 4 cuts, so small thin slabs are my go to. Plus I seem to always need a short narrow board for some project I’m doing and removing the live edge off one of the 1” thick slab ends saves me from cutting up nice long boards for just a couple short pieces.

I know because out of the blue one showed up at my work site . Built a sawdust box to put under it and before the day was done flitches were passing through it . Loved the little thing, bang on sizes . doubled production. And like I said . Spot on sizes . Worth it if you have some coin kicking around . No idea what the cost was , maybe others make cheaper ones, all I know is I loved the edger , worth every dime

    Only part way through the video when i make this comment so forgive me, and you probably already know, but i think you can buy hydraulic conversion kits for the thumb, to make it a hydraulic operated thumb instead. Probably a bit pricey, but theres lots of sites out there that do 2nd hand parts and after market stuff too, that you could probably get a cheaper one than brand new from the dealer. Sounds like it would make your life a lit easier having a movable thumb for sure. :) love your videos though, you and liz are such hard workers. X
