G2 Dreadwing and Smokescreen was my best friend's holy grail piece he always wanted. I managed to get a complete set for $25 for his birthday a couple of years ago. I'll never forget his happy face and sound of glee he made when he opened his gift
It’s so funny that a mold from nearly 30 years ago holds up this well. Laser Prime’s a killer design that was perfected the first time and has only gotten one successful redo (the Generations release).
@@EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho I dunno, the Legacy version of Laser Optimus Prime turned out pretty awesome too, even including the trailer as well as an axe that forms into a bigger sword.
Lots of surprisingly great toys in G2. I have a lot of love for that giant G2 Megatron, and for the Laser Prime mold as Scourge. And the Dreadwing and Smokescreen set is awesome - I love the RiD/Universe version. Also from a personal fave is Eagle Eye, just for the color scheme, thruster hands, and being one of the first g2 toys I bought.
Rapido and Terradive were two G2 figures I enjoyed as a kid, their gimmicks were their weapons Rapido’s blaster was his engine block and was vac metallize while Terradive’s blaster was his undercarriage radar but they decided not to vac metallize his group’s weapons.
Gen 2 was what introduced me to Transformers, and I was happy to see several of the toys I owned on this list - Roadblock (I used to pretend his "knees" were secret hidden weapons), Cyberjets Skyjack, Space Case and Hooligan, Dreadwing/Smokescreen, and of course Optimus (which I still have, although I lost the trailer, his head and hands) and Megatron (I sprayed him with water and freaked out when his voice box, in a very high voice, said, "Megatron attack!").
Scourge from Laser Prime (wouldn’t be the first time) Nightbird from Jolt Battletrap from the cancelled tow-truck Flip Changer that ended up as MW Hoist/Hubcap
@@EternityKingdomsHeadHoncho MW Hoist actually had a repaint that came with a flail like Battletrap, Nightbird as a laser sword figure was also something I thought would be a good idea
I'm giving honorable mention to G2 Sideswipe. The G2 toyline generally has wacky color schemes. However, Sideswipe's color scheme manages to surprisingly come off as pleasant to the eyes. Especially in car mode.
How HasTak hasn’t brought those suckers back is beyond me. Easy repaint and remold potential, they’d fit right in with everyone else being hyper articulated, and they could throw in some Robotmasters homages like R-Blade and X-Gunner.
6:45 Now Takara thought that Generations: Scoop would be a good update for him (and BotCon followed suit for his cancelled 1995 repaint). I assume if we got a new G1: Landfill, we would get his teammate, G2: Dirtbag. Also, who should get renamed, the Autoroller or the Ultra Pretender? (Not to mention that their cancelled 1995 & BWII recolors need proper names too.)
In BWII they just went all on the 'Autoroller' part with Autostinger (dump truck), Autocrusher (loader), Autolauncher (APC), and Autojetter (jet). So they have names just not super creative. Personally I think of the APC as a version of Blastcharge (one of the non show BM Vehicons) and the jet as Jetwash (a derpy sounding name for a somewhat derpy looking jet).
I always liked Electro. the guy really got the concept of the laser rods down, unfortunate 'genetics' of color aside. I still say that they should use the scraphook mold as a base to give us a new version smokescreen and dreadwing was a rel leap in everything, definitively the peak of g2, and surprisingly, in credible colors! I'm gonna push an idea here and have a formal renamig of G2Ramjet to Ramsled. it keeps the idea, it sounds similar enough and it doesn't overlap
Missile Truck Optimus actually got released in Europe slightly different decals as Sureshot. As to not over Shadow the deluxe G2 Optimus Prime toy. Still have mine (both)
I find it funny that the large-scale Optimus Prime has better articulation than the large-scale Megatron, while the small-scale Megatron has better articulation than the small-scale G1 redeco Optimus. I’m also amazed we’ve never seen the G2 Hero Megatron with a green and purple redeco. That would have been so cool. Really hope we get a G2 Dreadwing eventually in Legacy, but since the Prime version is coming, I doubt it, sadly.
Since the mold combined aspects of G1/2 & Prime for Skyquake, Dreadwing looks more like a G1fication of the Prime character (done better than Arcee or Bulkhead)... but the second jet mounting is there on Skyquake. They need to make something similar to Smokescreen/Smokejumper from the compatible Needlenose mold to make Dreadwing a bit of a G2 node as well.
Well, the smaller Megatron is the counterpart to the smaller new Optimus, who had roughly equal articulation. Technically the big Megatron was the counterpart to the G1 redeco Optimus since those were their first G2 toys (and what they looked like in the comic).
@@NovaSaber Huh, that makes more sense. I do find it funny how that G2 Megatron now towers over the original G1 version. It would be awesome if the G2 Hero Megatron did get a redeco in green and purple. It’d make a neat alternative to people who couldn’t get G1 Megatron.
Out of those, my favorites and the ones I had were Ramjet, a Laser Rod and Hero Optimus and Megatron. I remember being upset at somehow losing Laser Rod Volt's head and sword. I liked the G2 Aerialbots, until GPS happened.
Released. Lightning McQueen Jazz and Crayola Sideswipe from the Toxitron Collection have a charm to them, but nothing will EVER top Jazz in white, cyan and mango orange (especially the 2012 Generations release) and inverted colors EXTREEEEEME Sideswipe.
A similar but not exact version of the black color scheme was used for the Beast Wars 2nd release of the Dreadwing and Smokescreen as BB and Starscream. While Robotmasters (which sold the two seperate as well) changed the name from Smokescreen to Smokejumper (which is an actual term). My personal favorites that I owned are the Cyberjets, the Laser Cycles, and the Autorollers. I have both, and years later into adulthood eventually got my hands on the ones from BW2 that included the two unused in US molds as well... though, while they're hardly bad (and one is the only guy besides Laser Prime to have a disc launcher I think) it's kind of clear why they weren't actually used when G2 was already fumbling stateside. Fun side trivia - Much like how a lot of G1 was borrowed from Diaclone and Microchange, the Laser Cycles were used as part of a Microman revamp line in Japan.
I've never really taken a look at G2, Sure Lazer Prime is cool but RiD Scourge always comes to mind first. I've seen the cyber jets but never found them intrigueing. But boy oh boy did you add some figures to my want list haha. Including a cyber jet! Love your Here's 10 lists; been binging them haha
Interesting list. I love G2, both the toyline and the comics along with Robotmasters which given it reused some G2 molds, I see as an extension of G2. Regarding G2 Ramjet as a new character, IDW had both him and Actionmaster Thundercracker cameo in a single panel as separate but unnamed characters to the originals. G1 Ramjet had been killed early in the series and G1 Thundercracker was a very prominent, and still alive, member of the IDW cast. So officially, G2 Ramjet is a canonical, separate character to the original, expanding both the G1/2 cast and the Seekers, two of my favourite aspects of the franchise. In the Japanese manga, G2 Smokescreen is G1 Smokescreen having defected to the Decepticons while in the G2 comics, Dreadwing is a rebuilt Darkwing. Sorry for the long reply, I just love G2.
Excellent list. The top two are a tossup for me. G2 also gave us Sideswipe in the awesome black paint job, and another chance to get an Inferno that wasn’t all that different from G1. It was a time of experimentation and evolution for TFs.
I do believe that you left out a few of Laser Optimus Prime's features / gimmicks... light-piping for the eyes, the combat trailer also had the air-bladder fired missiles, and also that while in truck mode the button that lit up the robot mode's sword also lit up the truck's LED headlights, and the gun from the trailer's tower could fit into Optimus' hand and could light up too. - So, was this toy awesome and chock full of Gen2 gimmicks? Undeniable. But do the features now place him at #1 on your personal list here? Only you can decide that. - Either way, it's a GREAT toy, and I wish the later Scourge RiD repaint had kept the electronics.
I still have my Dreadwing and Smokescreen. Sadly Smokescreen broken in half. I did end up getting the brown version in Armada packaging Dreadwing and Smokejumper however.
Thanks for reminding me why I always thought G2 was pretty under-rated! Sure, there was some crazy schemes and a lot of recycling, but they also did a LOT of experimentation and made HUGE strides in articulation and functional gimmicks (and lets face it, at least some of those garish schemes became classics in their own right - purple and green Megatron has gotten a lot of revisits and cyan and purple seeker will always be a best of show color scheme as far as I'm concerned....). It also scares me a little how close your list was to mine, some of the internal order is a bit different, but the list itself (particularly at the top) was almost identical. Heh, it also reminded me how much I feel sorry for Electro: he had one of the most unique designs and transformations of his era (a 50's hot rod truck?) and complemented it with great articulation and a cool gimmick - and of course he had to be made COMPLETELY out of self destructing plastic.... I feel like if they ever decide to redo him, they should just totally throw the gold out the window, give him an entirely new color scheme. If Scourge could rock the hot pink, this guy could be black with pink and blue lightning bolts and if anything, do something like gold painted windows and eyes, just to hearken back to the old scheme in a way that isn't going to effect the durability one jolt. I mean jot. Dammit - for once autocorrect actually came up with an appropriate pun.....
Thankfully we never got G2 Hero Megatron Arctic Camo. While the color scheme is more down to earth compared to regular Hero Megatron, the arctic camo manages to come off as ugly. It makes me prefer regular Hero Megatron.
