just to be clear Givenchy designed ALL of Audrey's dresses in Sabrina. The studio didn't want to give anyone other than Edith Head a screen credit, which is why they made Audrey buy them herself - which *technically* wouldn't require a screen credit.

Jamie Taylor except that one in the beginning, before Sabrina goes to Paris...

    • @davejones5747
      @davejones5747 4 года назад +9

Not quite true. Audrey couldn't have affforded to buy all those couture costumes at that time when she was in her early twenties. Sabrina was only her second big role, and she wouldn't even have been called the star if Roman Holiday if Gregory Peck hadn't insisted she get top billing over him. When Hepburn returned from visiting Givenchy in Paris, what did she bring with her? "Did she bring actual clothes from Givenchy, or did she bring sketches?" Joe Maddalena, who found the famous Sabrina gown in a trunk (that was supposed to go to Goodwill after Debbie Reynolds' and Carrie Fisher's death) is firmly in Edith Head's camp on this. "I can see her looking at Givenchy's sketches and saying, 'OK,' and then creating her own interpretation." His argument is bolstered, by an examination of the actual dress, which was auctioned later. "A couture dress is completely finished on the inside," he notes. "Studio-created costumes are unfinished inside, so a costumer can quickly open and close them if needed on set. This dress is unfinished inside, and it's been stamped by Paramount's wardrobe department." IMO Givenchy would not have sold an unfinished dress.
But I have read in several places that Audrey always made sure Givenchy got screen credit for any work he did on her movies after that. They were good friends.

    • @tomvalveede6808

He received a phone call from the movie Studio. They told him that he was needed to design dresses for
Ms. Hepburn. She would be in to see him the next day.
Kathryn Hepburn was who Givenchy thought was coming, he opened the door, and Audrey is there, dressed in black Capri slacks, and a black knit top. They hit it off instantly!
He said he had no thanks me to make her the dresses she needed for Sabrina, but said to chose what she liked from last year's collection.
She selected the black cocktail dress with the high neckline in front, two tiny bows at her shoulders, and a deep V cut in the back.
The other dress was the White gown covered in embroidery of large black flowers. It had 2 silouettes, it was form-fitting in front, with a large full skirt in back.
Then there was a simple, black suit.
Story goes that he became friends instantly with her, and offered the
3 pieces from the previous years collection, but she gave him
"some" money, no where near their true cost.
They went to the premier of the movie together, and when they gave
credit to E.Head, at the end, she was said to have been very upset.
He took it in stride, He knew that they were his, as well as Audrey,
      So it didn't bother him.
      Both the epitome of understated
      Style, Class, and good taste!
As for the "condition" Head knew what she had to do, to make them all look like Hollywood clothing!
No way was that type of lavish
Embroidery ever put on a movie dress; done by hand, it's too time consuming. And for a starlet, she would not have bothered.

Last year there was an exhibiion of her gowns here in the Netherlands, where she grew up. The one everyone ran to was of course the black dress of Breakfast at Tiffany's. It was guarded by big guys who looked at you like you were Pablo Escobar. But I got around them. I "somehow" dropped my purse and everything in it fell out. While I picked up everything off the floor, I touched that dress, and felt my soul go way up, all the way to Audrey. Every time I see that scene now at the beginning of Breakfast it's - yesssssss! RIP to both those greats. Former professional NYC fashion illustrator here and it was the designs of Givenchy for his muse the late great Audrey Hepburn. Edith Head designed all the fashions for the rest of the cast, but Audrey had insisted on the designs of best friend Givenchy for this film. Audrey's fashions inspired by Givenchy influences fashions to this day with capri pants/cropped pants and ballet flats. She also inspired the late great beautiful Jackie Kennedy with her iconic fashions. I have a photo of Jackie in the 1950s after she married JFK where she's wearing a similar Audrey outfit and holding the leash of her big black poodle with her hair cut short ala Audrey. Very similar to the scene from the classic Sabrina where Audrey returns from Paris with her short hair, white hat, black suit holding her black poodle by a leash! I'm sure Jackie saw that movie and obviously inspired her to have the same look gloves and all as well...Thanks for sharing....great job!

P.S. she also wore some fabulous 1960s fashions in the great romantic comedy.drama, "Two for the Road" with the great handsome British actor Albert Finney with whom she had a brief affair with. Those iconic fashions were by designer Poco Rabanne. And in that movie also starring a 23 year old Jacqueline Bisset, Audrey wears jeans with a red sweater which was kind of new compared to the old dark navy dungarees worn by some actresses in the 1950s movies...these were more straight legged and more faded/stone washed worn with sneakers. Other fashions included a mod print mini dress and a black vinyl pant suit ...very chic and mod looking! Thanks again for sharing... will never forget her, her spirit lives on!

The little black dress is beyond iconic !! I imagine this dress on a brown hairwoman and a Balenciaga perfume (Quadrille) from the 50's....

My fav Audrey's outfit is not a dress. It's a black sweater, slim black 3/4 trousers, black flat ballerina shoes and enormoulsy big male-like black coat, when she visits Bogart in his office in "Sabrina". What a classy total look, ready to wear today as well!

Watching this is like going back to the age of grandeur and stylish looks of Hollywood! Givenchy was a genius and obviously Audrey was his muse! It was like one "whoa" after the other, until that little simple yet gorgeous black dress, timeless, simple, inspirational!

A year ago there was an exhibition in the Netherlands of the dresses by de Givenchy. The major dress in it was the one Audrey Hepburn wore- the black dress when Breakfast at Tiffany's start' s and she's eating a pretzel in front of Tiffany's. I touched it for a second ( it was't allowed, but.... you only get this chance once), and every time I hear Moon River I think of the time I got so close to this beautiful lady and how magnificent and unbelievable she was. It is a moment I will never forget.

I met Audrey Hepburn about 30 -35 years ago (I don’t remember the exact year) LOL, when she came to visit the NICU at Rainbow Babies and Children. She was very thin and elegant and she spoke briefly to me about the babies (I was a nurse in the NICU). Something I will always remember.

In 2006, I found a brand-new 3 piece navy blue wool suit on the bargain rack at Encore resale shop on Madison Avenue for $70. The jacket is the finest wool, lined in silk, and the shoulders have like 3 seams in them so the fit is perfect. The jacket fits so well it looks custom-made. It came with slightly flared navy trousers and short skirt. I almost passed out when I saw the label- it was Givenchy! The salesperson told me it would have sold for around $4,000. The pockets were stitched shut, so it had never been worn. Ever since I saw Breakfast at Tiffany's, I dreamt about owning a Givenchy, and I am amazed that this is in my closet. When I put it on, I feel like a Pan Am stewardess.

The clothes in Charade are not the most dramatic, but they'll always be my favorite.
AND your #1 (the FULL-length evening gown she wears in the opening scene of B@T's) is NOT a "little black dress'--but the one she wears to Sing-Sing is.
