I think it's more about marketability. CC is easy to like, a goofball off court but a monster on court and interviews so well, always saying the right things. A'ja doesn't come off as being as likable and is rude to reporters sometimes, etc. Someone like Naphese Collier is much more polite and would be a better representative in my opinion.
I agree that A'ja is a better player, but Clark is more fun to watch. Jordan and LeBron played to a mostly white audience and they were both enormously popular. Same reason as Clark, very fun to watch. My second favorite WNBA player to watch is Arike, and there are players who are better than she is, but even so, she is more fun to watch than they are.
