My love of comics is pure… I buy 2 comics of every book to ensure I read everything. Wether it’s a key or not, but yea I agree with you chasing keys is pretty expensive
I know this focused on single issues, but one of my favorite spidey stories nobody talks about was a six issue arc of Spectacular Spider-Man called "The Child Within" (it was actually not too long after that doc ock christmas issue) . Besides Kraven's Last Hunt, it's my favorite storyline featuring Vermin, and all of the issues are essentially dollar bin finds.
The first Ashley Kafka (Queen Goblin) in this run is no longer a dollar book. Harry Goblin is the best written Goblin. His death in Spectacular 200 is one of my favorite issues.
I take "Favourite Spidey Comics" videos over "Top Spidey Comics" any day, so I really appreciate you doing this ! Thank you ASM issues *25 and 43* are the 2 spidey issues I've had the most fun reading. ASM issue *259* (Mary Jane's backstory) is one of the most relatable issue for me. I also deeply love "Hunger" and "Countdown" by *Paul Jenkins*
I read 4 of these. ASM 350 jumps out as one of my favorite self-contained stories when he had to use all his wits to survive a battle with Dr. Doom. Spider-Man Vol. 1 #17 is another that comes to mind when he "dies" and faces Thanos and Death.
My favorite unrated comic is Amazing Annual 14. Doom, Strange and Spider-man fantastic art!!, fantastic story!! Hands down one of my favorite so much I got it Signed by Denny O'Neil and Miller than slabbed. The cover alone is so awesome!!
Zero, that’s why I love your channel and watch your videos because I love learning about this stuff. Thank you for all that you do. I can honestly say I’ve learned the most from your channel.
I really appreciate this type of video and make sure I watch them whenever you put them out. No one on earth has the time or energy to ready every comic out there, there is just simply too much content. The info really helps people find some diamonds in the rough among filler issues, annuals, and offshoot titles. When you did the Batman one, I went out and picked up Batman Black and White 4, and I’m sure I’ll get something off of this list too.
I've read 3 of them. Another good story, from the same series about Kingpin's employee, is about the Rhino. The story mirrors the novel 'Flowers for Algernon'.
James- This list was awesome! As a Spider-Man centric collector, I had most of these books. I wasn't collecting for a few years so I missed some of these and now thanks to you I'm going to go hunt these down! My favorite "underrated" Spider-Man story is probably ASM #248. I read it as kid and still remember it to this day. Thanks for the great content!!
My favourite Spider Man story is in Amazing 233-236. The original Tarantula takes a spider serum and mutates over time into a giant spider (like Jeff Goldblum in The Fly though it predated that movie by 3 years). It's got a really tragic ending which shocked me as an 11-year old.
I've read them all, I recently picked up the Spiderman Power Pack. They're all great reads. The Sensational Spiderman was a very underrated run. Thanks for sharing. Great list!
I haven't read it, but was made aware of the Spider-Man/Power Pack story. I'ma have to hunt these all down. I really dig Unlimited Spider-Man. There are some awesome stories in that run.
A really good Spidey tale you can get your hands on from eBay is not a Spider comic. It's ok web head and the mysterious dream drifter of the marvel universe. Kingpin and some goons make a last ditch effort to finally unmasking our friendly neighborhood wall crawler. Before nightmares become reality the wet dreams of a teenage boy bring a dream catcher into the mix. Sleepwalker 5 and 6 are two tales with old school Busema era art. A story that will leave your Spidey senses tingling with it's excilerating climax.
The story of the spectacular Spider-Man #173 sounds really good and emotional just one problem. The artist for the issue Sal buscema is a shit artist. I can’t understand why marvel allowed him to draw Spider-Man for so long every character he draws look like old retired people which makes the characters who are actually old look even horrendous. I’m sorry but aunt May looks dreadful in this story and every other time he’s drawn her. Again I’m sure the story is really good but man oh man could they have had a better artist for the issue?
One issue that I feel is more known for the cover is ASM 491 it has some of the best interaction and writing between MJ and Peter. Really showing how they sometimes struggle to understand each other and the different issues they both face and sometimes can't even tell each other and it has a few cameos of some S tier characters 😉
Just found the stan lee version of batman i believe you mentioned in a batman one shots video. Was suprised i found it and for $2 at Capt. Blue Hen. Very good.
James this is great your on to something with the market being so crazy and books are tanking in find the spec videos have become repetitive and based on hopes and dreams on movies that are years away… this on the other hand is informative and very entertaining your an awesome part and f this community! ✌🏽
My favourite is still Ultimate Spider-Man #78. Mostly because it just gave me them Buffy vibes and I just love how they portrayed MJ's reaction to her & Peter's breakup.
Nice list! Friendly Neighborhood Spidey Hobgoblin 2211 and Spider-Man 211 is a cool story. It has a Time Cop/Minority Report aspect to it. I also like the greedy Peter Parker who becomes alienated from Uncle Ben.
I have 5 of those issues: SSM 40, Web of SpM 6, Tangled Web 4, SSM 173, ASM Annual 28. That Tangled Web issue is excellent. Bought it back in '07 maybe after seeing it on a must-read list. It more than lived up to the hype. Two of my favorite lesser-known Spider-Man stories (though one might be a little more known) involve the Kingpin, oddly. One is Amazing Spider-Man 274 in which Mephisto and the Beyonder make a wager on whether Spider-Man would save Kingpin from an assassin or renounce his sense of responsibility. The second one came three months later in Amazing Spider-Man 277, which has a deceptive cover because it pertains to the odd back-up story. The events in the issue take place right in the middle of the Flash Thompson-Hobgoblin saga, but it also crosses over with the "Born Again" story line in Daredevil. After meeting with a defeated Matt Murdock, Spider-Man goes to confront the Kingpin in his office, and the entire confrontation is a conversation in which Fisk explains to Spider-Man how much his criminal network benefits from the Web-Slinger's heroics. It's a fascinating four pages that are beautifully drawn and choreographed with Fisk subtly trying to put himself in a position to physically fight back if needed and being thwarted each time, but in the end really hurting Spider-Man the most with his words.
Zero for ten! Great video and 100% true - for me at least :). One suggestion? I think it would be great if you name the writer/artist for the stories when you do lists like this. I like to see the creative team get a shout out.
Of course, ASM 248 (The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man) is great and fairly favored by many. ASM 229 with Spidey against the Juggernaut is an amazing battle. Web of SM 2 with the Vulturions. Petet Parker 64 introducing Cloak & Dagger (although I guess that makes it a key). Marvel Team-Up Annual 4 with Moon Knight, Power Man & Iron Fist, and Daredevil against the Purple Man.
I had all but the power pack one. Inspired me to try and find it. Good video. So much focus everywhere on “keys” and 9.8 and “grails”. It’s nice to let the story/art lead. Those are all great books and easy to come across. The spidey stories that I remember are the asm 233-236 run with will o the wisp.
Marvel Knights Spiderman #15. You got to love a story where another villain uses the Absorbing Man's power to his advantage. If you've read this story then you know that cocaine is bad for you but it's even worse when your power literally absorbs it.
I still remember Web of Spiderman 6 from when it came out. It was one of those stories that just sticks in your mind. I think it helps that it's the kind of story where you keep asking yourself what you would do in that situation.
Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment is a great team-up for those two characters. They go to Hades to fight Mephisto and free Doctor Doom’s deceased mother. Features Mike Mignola art and written by Roger Stern.
@@MintHunterComics You really need to read that…it adds so much depth to Doctor Doom’s character, and it showcases how cool Doctor Strange is. They are charging the Gates of Hell and dropkicking demons throughout the book.
I only knew 1. ASMannual. Reading it growing up, I thought Carnage was unstoppable, physically. People needed tricks or extra special weapons to beat him.
Dude interesting list. I only heard of and read one of these and it's one of my favorite Spider-Man stories ever: Spectacular Spider-Man 173 is an underappreciated masterpiece. Classic book. Glad it got recognition somewhere.
One super common comic I've always loved for its cover (Jim Mooney is so underrated) and for the story too is Spectacular Spider-Man (vol. 1) 36 (continues in 37). I wish Swarm was a bigger villain...
Actually have a few of these I saw just yesterday going thru some long boxes. Always like that Tangled Web story, love the Risso art too. Such a different take on that universe. Found a mint copy of ASM Annual #6 while I was looking too. Nice score I had forgotten about. No ASM annual 16 though, dang.
That is crazy how you highlighted Spectacular 40, an issue I happen to have. I agree that it's a creepy storyline, and never thought it could catch anyone else's attention. Great job!

And the clone saga was during this period and judging from the history of the clone saga I think the people at marvel just didn’t care about Spider-Man like at all. Amazing Spider Man 218. The story is not very good but the cover is very cool
