I was a local Arcade Champion. I rarely lost when I was at my peak around age 14-16. Any pinball or fighting game I could pretty much dominate once I got the hang of it. I remember when Mortal Combat was very popular. One night the Arcade was jam packed with teens. I had been playing vs challengers for 3 hours without losing. One salty kid drove to the mall to pick up a guy who worked at the Arcade there and was said to be the best in town. The guy showed up and people let him cut in front to take me down. Well, I mopped the floor with him 6 strait in a row with 40 people watching and cheering. I had the time of my life that night.
This video was truly hilarious. Thank you for taking the time to break it down. As a serious retro game collector, I’m constantly intrigued and curious about the Japanese perspective on the use of the language in these games.
Wow, it took a random video by a random person for me to understand what my favourite fighters were saying 30 plus years later, thanks. You got a sub from me.
In Brazil, back when we were children, we used to translate some of those phrases to something we could understand: Thus, tatsumaki sempuukyaku became "ataque das corujas" (owl attack), spinning bird kick was "sim, Dhalsim" (yes, Dhalsim!) and dosukoi became "cuscus" (couscous, a dish made of minced corn or wheat). It is really nice to learn what they really mean (though I always thought spinning bird kick was cyclone kick). Thanks for the video!
For Mortal Kombat, the creators did at first wanted Raiden to scream in Japanese, but it didn't sound right so they decided to make random jibberish screaming.
We Brazilians are specialists in hearing things "wrong" in a funny way! Another move we mishear is Chun Li's Spinning Bird Kick (at 8:24 in the video): MINI TAXI!

The fact that she said that every person tend to hear these things based upon their respective language made me instantly remember Chun Li Spinning Bird Kick as we pronounce here, MINI TAXI! 😂😂😂 Fellow Brazilian, can you remember Dee Jay special move? NESCAU? 😂😂😂 The special move of Guile, my favorite character, that he jumped with his kick, we also named here despite he actually saying anything. We here have a type of branded razor called Gilette. The cut Guile gives was so big that we called the Sommersault the aumentative of Gilette, Giletão (added by the fact that we as young people playing didn't wanted to use the weak or normal versions of the moves, ONLY the more powerful version that went faaaar high in the sky 😂).
Nada a ver com Street Fighter ( na verdade Marvel vs Capcom ). mas lembrei daquele movimento do Wolverine: " - Berserker Barrage." e eu sempre entendi: " - Essa é minha garagem!" xD
In Arizona and part of California both games had about the same popularity. If not, mortal combat had a little more in the arcade. She didn't even know about mortal combat 😂

@@WingoTribe704s***'s week
I day dreamed when I was 11 in 1994 that someone would make this video...one day... finally is here
Thank you for making this video. I particularly appreciate the guess at the raiden special. Your version of the meaning gives it a great reference.
Raiden is saying "I NEED MY MONEEYYYY! and "JOHNNY'S IN THE CAAARRRRR!!"
Bro i read this as the video played and i cant unhear this now lol
Lmfaooo I’m crying
the editing, magnificent!
the energy and information, spectacular!
Loved it 10/10
Blimey.. What a rarity! an informing and genuinely funny youtube vid :) :) Great content and just sub'd. Thanks!
“Your mother’s from L.A” 😂.
😂😂😂😂😂
That’s actually very offensive 😂
Figueroa Street to be exact
😂😂😂😂
Growing up from LA, I definitely thought the same lmao 😂😂😂
One of the cutest and most fun videos I've seen on YT in a long time! Thank you. Made me smile)))
so many years had passed to watch this golden video.. thank yoy miss!
This is the video I didn't know I needed until I watched it. This is so mind blowing to the our inner child
"Attack the Fruity Kid" 💀
🗿
Peak comedy back in the day
What sketch is that from?@@ArgentLeftovers
@@alexmars1511 Pete Holmes show. Just type street Fighter. There's a few.
@@ArgentLeftoversyou must not be familiar with much comedy from "back in the day"
For me and my friends, Ryu's spinning kick was always 'Perfected bird kick'.
I'm dead 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
We used to joke that Raiden said "Side of Mayonnaise!!!"
😂😂😂😂😂 now that u mentioned it💀
💀💀💀
There was also the "I just laid an egg"
This replaced my childhood head cannon of "Are you READY?!"
I always thought he Raiden Zoom in air!
I'm glad Rosetta Stone helped you learn Japanese so well. ;)
Great video, thanks! Really impressed with the level of detail that went into these games. Would've been nice to know the meanings back then, but happy to learn them now to bring a new level of appreciation.
Big thumbs up for the Yan Can Cook clip. Great style here, my 1st time viewing this channel.
IKR! I thought I was the only one who noticed!
Yan Can Cook. LOL! Such great memories. Growing up with just over a handful of channels and watching whatever wasn’t a soap opera or the news. So much better than any of those stupid reality TV shows that destroyed TV entirely.
@@rumblefish9 lmao great name/Pic too! Spaceman Spiff for life
Old school PBS. Chances are you've tasted government cheese.
I caught that too. I loved his show as a kid.
5:53 I always thought it sounds like *PINT OF LEMONADE*
Thank you for the daaay!
In spanish: "baile mapale"
give me my money
😂😂😂😂
Your video made my day! Funny!!
When you receive something you didn't know you wanted, but find out you desperately needed.
...and, what exactly would that be?
An unexpected gift ❤
surely there's a german word for this
@@AHTOtv what....the video? Have you ever seen Pete Holmes?
In France, for SF2 we thought Sagat was saying “Ta Gueule” ( STFU in French) instead of “Tiger”.
Lol Oui c'est vrai
In Spain many people thought he was saying Jaime (a male proper name) and instead of Tiger uppercut he was saying: Jaime, ¿donde estas? (Where are you, Jaime?)
I'm going to go with the French interpretation. There's still some (really, really old) people in Thailand who remember the French.
In Brazil, we called it "Tiger Robocop"
@@MrZozue Sempre achei isso ridículo, mas compreensível.
after 40yrs from my childhood, i have cleared my doubts about street fighter ,, thank you 🤗
