  • Me and Kirby from Kirby Meet Audio decided to make a project inspired on each other's work and this is my take on making new cases for my old computer 2.1 speakers. Kirby has fantastic audio related builds and you can even get plans and kits to make your own speakers. Check him out! Very inspirational.
    Coloured MDF-like material used in this project is called Valchromat.
    Black foam sheet I cut circles of with a circle cutter is called EVA Foam.

    Nice job. Just one remark - it's a good to tie the knot on the cable inside the box. It's a quite good and easy protection against pulling cable.

    Awesome craftsmanship! You used a few methods that I hadn't thought of that I can now add to my bag of tricks, so thank you! Luckily I have one trick in return for you. When you're using a hole saw, it stops cutting because the gullets in the saw fill up. To effectively clear the chips that fill up the gullets so you don't have to flip your workpiece midway, you can drill some holes around the circumference of the hole before using the hole saw, and voilla! your chips will fall through the holes, and your hole saw wont clog anymore

    Looks like they came out well. But just for future reference, when gluing up the boxes, it is best to leave the speakers out. As the glue cures, it can release gases that are damaging to the speakers. You should give it 24 hours after gluing to put the speakers in.

    I love the colored MDF. Never liked it as a material for finished pieces, but this makes the speakers look so soft and touchable!

    • @becomingjoana
      @becomingjoana 7 лет назад

      Ignaz Kevenaar it isn't MDF, is a material called Valchromat.

    • @IgnazKevenaar
      @IgnazKevenaar 7 лет назад

      It's compressed wood fibre material. A lot of sites list it as MDF. It even says so right in the description it is "MDF-like material". I don't really get your point here. Since Googling "colored MDF" gives me about the same results :P

    • @GetHandsDirty
      @GetHandsDirty  7 лет назад +1

      It looks like MDF but its name is Valchromat. Google Valchromat and you will find all about it. Is way better, more resistant and higher quality than MDf.

    Awesome project! It gives the speakers a new "life". A tip, make a knot with the cable on the inside of the case so that if you pull the cable from outside it will not pull from the soldering points.

      I'm sure they are because you improved the enclosure with the isolation and I'm also sure MDF is quite better acoustically versus plastic. Regards!

  • @daviddavids2884
    @daviddavids2884 7 лет назад

    thanks for posting. some thoughts. when remounting speakers, it's a good idea to determine whether the old enclosure was a sealed or ported design. it's possible that, when mounted in a sealed enclosure, speakers with a rolledge surround will 'ring'. or it may be fine. one thing that's not fine is the circular speaker mounting gasket.
    the gasket should have 'ears' that include the area of the mounting tabs. without ears, the speaker frame shape can distort when mounting screws are tightened. cheers

    The best collaboration on RUclips ever.
    I am not one to post a comment publicly on RUclips, but once I viewed your approach on Kirby's plans it was like internationally DYI on a new platform.
    Your creative skills are 2nd to none and the details that you put on all of your videos with each build are just incredible. Kirby and his knowledge base on speakers, it's a matter of time that some youtubers content provders started this cross sharing and maximizing on this RUclips Platform.
    Keep it up and before long Bose and Boston Acoustic will be out of business because together you both have leveled the global paying field. I know they are watching these videos too. They will have to shift their global strategy with their ambiguous conventions and how they are able to sell $900 speakers that only cost $60 to build ...
    when it comes so audio that is done right, no one wants cheap speakers.
    We want quality. so now it will be how can you make these builds on a dime an put them on amazon so that I can order them.
    Bravo, great video and great post.
    I am looking forward towards your next creative post.
