I am so done trying to collect rainwater. I've had the same issues. If my plants can't deal with tap water than I'm over them. 😂
Try using API stress coat to treat you tap water, it's not expensive at all. It serves to eliminate chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals. Mainly used as a water conditioner for aquariums but it is excellent for plants, it helped me with the leaves of my Maranthas, Ctenanthe and Calatheas that are pretty sensitive with the quality of water

Right! I was just trying to provide them with good water haha. Now I am paying the price for it. I keep going back and forth with collecting again but I think I would be paranoid even filtering it now.

My Rattlesnake had leaves very similar. I thought it was that I wasn't watering enough/frequency.
I wouldn't trash it either. I put on my surgeon jacket and operate. Like you, I find joy in saving my babies, if possible.

I guess because I worked in child protection, then retired and volunteered in animal welfare and rescues, so now I'm rescuing and rehabbing plants!😂😂. It is challenging and rewarding both!!

Hi Melissa,👋 I love using Dyno-Gro Foliage-Pro, but with summer I couldn’t keep up with watering.😅 So I put Osmocote on everything! When water gets cold I’ll go back to maintenance with Dyno-Gro using gallon water jugs & room temperature water made up in advance. Love your channel! You are a favorite Planty person! ☺️💚🪴🌿

I highly recommend either DynaGrow Foliage Pro or Growth Technology Foliage Focus liquid fertilisers. Both are designed to be used every watering (weakly, weekly) which I actually find much easier than trying to remember which plants are due to be fed. I just pop the correct measure into my watering jug with a dropper - it takes seconds, so it's no drama. The only time I deviate from that is if I have a plant that gets watered more than once a week - in that case I'll pour some of my prepared mix into a separate cup or jug and add a bit of extra water before I water the plant. The reason I like these fertilisers is that they are complete (DynaGrow has 16 nutrients and Growth Technology has 12) and because you use the continuously, your plants are getting a constant supply of immobile nutrients like calcium. I also like them because I know exactly how much fertiliser my plants are getting. Slow release can be very variable in its delivery because it is usually heat dependent. They're both suitable for hydroponic use, too, so they're great for LECA and pon reservoirs. I usually add Growth Technology Rootzone as well, which contains things like fulvic acid that help create a healthy microbiome in your soil.
Where do you purchase GT Foliage Focus? Everywhere I look it’s so expensive or has a high shipping charge 😅
@@katienorris3153 It's an Australian-made product and I'm in New Zealand, so it's not particularly expensive here. If you're in the Northern Hemisphere, you'll probably be better off getting DynaGrow. It's a much smaller bottle but it's way more concentrated than GT so you use much less per dose.
Interestingly, I ran the recommended doses of DynaGrow and GT through a horticultural PPM calculator, and the GT dose is quite a bit stronger. They recommend 5ml per litre, but at 3ml per litre, the strength of the nutrients is much closer to those in DynaGrow's recommended doseage. So I use the weaker dose, and it makes the GT a bit more economical.

@@plantsbymelissa You're welcome! I know it sounds counter-intuitive that it's easier to fertilise every water, but it really is! It just becomes part of the routine and takes all the guesswork away. I have a lot of plants and a terrible memory, so it's a lifesaver for me 😆
I mix chunky perlite with my stratum, for two reasons:to make it go further and to add some airy-ness since stratum can get compacted

I enjoy trying to save sad plants too but oddly two of the easiest plants are giving me grief. I’ll give them a few more weeks but maybe they’ll just snap out of it. Highly agreed about suggesting the Glorious over the Gloriosum! I chose my gloriosum initially because I wanted to add my first crawler into my collection! Since will have to say the gloriosum has been a huge learning experience and been both on and off the struggle bus MANY times unfortunately with some similar issues aswell! Also I just had to add that i just recently purchased Marble Queen pothos to put on a moss pole because I havent been able to get over how stunning yours is! I’ve noticed recently how much I’ve started to change went from wishlist plants to wishlist stages of mature growth since adding more plants to moss poles! 👏🏼😂 As always LOVE this video! 🫶🏼☺️
I've been having one heck of a time with my alocasia in anything but stratum. I've managed to rehab my silver dragon, I cut it right down and now its giving me new leaves and just seems happier in general. I've had to say good bye to my stingray though :( and I am hoping my amazonica recovers - its given me lots of babies though that are all leafing out so I'm not too worried if it doesn't. but as you've said its so satisfying and gratifying to watch the plants come bounce back after all the hard work of rehabbing them. I really enjoy your videos, they give me so much insight. Thank you. :)
For a liquid fertilizer I am almost through my first bottle of Neptune's Harvest Fish & Seaweed Fertilizer 2-3-1 and my plants have been loving it!
Hi I'm in UK, i use API stress coat water conditioner, used for aquariums. Will clear chloramines/chlorines out of the water. Since using this I have no crispiness or browning leaves. Just putting this out there.

Agree. I use something similar in a green bottle from pet smart! It’s like three drops per gallon and is mega affordable! I have learned the aquarium section of the pet store is what’s up. Oh and it’ll say on the bottle how long to wait. Most are instant, some take up to 15 min

Thank you! I am still trying to figure that out lol. This was my first year I really had several plants outside so knowing me I will probably go the beneficial bug route and maybe just check the plants and the soil over really well before bringing them inside.

I'm not sure if you wanna try this but I have my gloriosum in a no drainage setup and it is doing well. I have it in a rectangular clear storage container with a 1" layer of leca on the bottom. It's in a no-soil mix consisting of coco chunks, orchid bark, charcoal, and chunky perlite. I'm using osmocote to fertilize. It's so easy to know when to water. When it looks like the water is nearly gone I just add til the leca is nearly covered. It's been working for me. Could be a fun experiment with one of your chonks at least.
Also, if you wanna save on fluval you can cut it with perlite. I've used fine and chunky. I've been successful with both.

I love osmocote, but struggle with keeping up with the 3 month interval. So I add a little osmocote when I repot, and put low amounts of GT foliage focus in my pump sprayer that I go around and water with. Then I finish with water with nematodes and great white. Sounds like a lot when I type it out, but in practice is really easy
I know I have been struggling with my slow release this year 🙈 i definitely want to look into doing something in addition to it. I haven’t heard of great white before I’ll have to look that up! Thanks for sharing! 🫶🏻
I think rain water damaged some of my plant leaves too…but they always make a comeback!!!!
Hope they all bounce back to big, beautiful plants. I’ve had success with a liquid fertilizer called Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. It’s now called Superthrive Foliage Pro.

I had the same issues using rainwater, i now just use tap water with declorinator ( because i also have fish tanks ) it helps alot! And for a liquide firtilizer, ive heard of liquidirt but have not tried it myself ❤ hope all your plant babies make a comeback!
I think most people that have problems with gloriosum are people that tend to underwater plants. I usually overwater my plants and gloriosum does very good in my care and grows fast, however I sometimes struggle with known to be easy plants.

I use liquidirt! My plants seem to really like it. I also use osmocote. Liquidirt can be used everytime an doesn't hurt

I use 1/4 dose of liquid fertilizer for the moss poles and slow release fertilizer for the soil. The plants seem to love it.
Stratum has been around for a long time in the aquarium hobby. It is planted tank substrate which releases nutrients slowly. I think it is made of fired clay that they staturate with nutrients. Very expensive substrate that only serious aquarists use for planted tanks.

I tried a Gloriosum and killed it, was one of my first "rate expensive" plants and it just died a slow death didn't give me any leaves. Probably my lack of experience but I don't think they're as easy as some claim in a house setting. I think they are gorgeous if you live in Florida or something and can have them as a yard plant.
I think if you buy one more mature it helps for indoors but they're definitely finicky. Crawlers are so hard to care for :/
I’ve seen such a huge difference in using Foliage Pro liquid fertilizer. I have a big 2gal pump sprayer and I put my FP in a glass jar with a dropper that’s attached to the lid. Then I know I just have to add some many droppers full to my big sprayer.

Gold Leaf Food is great I hear for those. It is a liquid but great for instant. I use it now too at times.
I was using Marphyl Soil Enhancer for quite a while. It’s a Marine Plancto something or other. I switched to Osmocote in July and my plants seem to be much happier now.
I love the BroBizz fishmix fertiliser 👌 it really helps upsize the leafes 🌱
Hi Melissa! Thank you for another great vid! All my plants are in Lechuza Pon and I use a Liquid Nutrient Solution combo by General Hydroponics that I mix and make multiple 1 gallon batches in 1 gallon jugs so I always have on hand. I know it sounds like a lot of work but my plants do so well with this solution combo in Pon as the slow release fert doesn't last and I feel plants do not get enough nutrients from the fert that is in the Pon. Here is my combo recipe below that I mix in order from 1-5 so solutions don't cancel themselves out while mixing. Have 5 small separate containers with water from the full gallon jug , add one solution to each container and mix and then pour small container of liquid in to the gallon jug one at time and mix in order from 1-5.
General Hydroponics: I use tap water and PH usually is in the 5.7-6.5 range with this mix (can use this in a soil mix also)
1.Calimagic: 5ml per gallon
2.Flora Micro: 10ml per gallon
3.Flora Gro: 10ml per gallon
4.Flora Bloom: 10ml per gallon
5.Diamond Nectar: 5 ml per gallon (this helps the plant absorb nutrient better)

That's interesting about the rainwater. I have a golden pathos hanging outside and it has been rained on a few times. It started getting an orang / brown spots on it. As time has gone on it covered the leaves. So I have just been trimming off the funky leaves.
Sounds like some kind of rust fungus. I actually found some on my BOP outside earlier this week. I think fungal issues happen more often than people think but they don't diagnosed and it can really take out a plant :(

I chopped and propped my white wizard and snapped off every single leaf 😂
I use Hydra Greens. It's a Canadian product so it's been cheaper for me. It says to use weekly which works for me as it makes the habit easier to incorporate in the plant schedule rather than a slow release or once a month thing.

I transferred all my crawling philodendron into Pon and they loooove it! They all grow really big leafes. No issues since then🤍🌱

Liquid fertiliser wise, what I do is use a small amount of slow release alongside liquid gold leaf fertiliser. I like it because I can use it in different dilutions for normal feeding, semi hydro and foliar feeding. I wouldn't say i use it every time but more often than not. I'm not quite through half a bottle of it over the last year

I am also in the process of rehabbing my gloriosum! I think it caught spider mites and is just a difficult plant for me. I have not yet figured out crawlers. Some day! Thanks for the video :)
Crawlers are difficult! I need to research more of them. I am excited to see how one grows in pon though :) Sorry about your gloriosum!
I use the miracle grow all purpose plant food. Its for indoor and outdoor plants. I use it every other week at most. Its basically dissolvable crystals and it comes with a scoop. It takes like 2 seconds to add it to my water on watering days lol It'd be interesting to see your thoughts

Espoma Organic Indoor Houseplant Food I can recommend. I dilute half strength and there seems to be no risk of over fertilizing when slow release is already in the soil. Been doing that routine for about 2 years now. Curious to see how the Gloriosum will do. 🤗

I've used stratum for the first time about two weeks ago on a white princess cutting and it literally rooted in 7 days. However, I wasn't sure if my clear cup should have drainage holes so I didn't add any.
Love watching repotting videos, I've been putting off my pictus Exotica it's leaves are curling and its not needing water. I think it didn't like being up potted.

I have many liquid fertilizers i bought on different you-tuber recommendations and I always just wind up mixing them together. I eyeball it and should really try to be better about measuring. I just kinda throw it in willy nilly😂

Hi Melissa! I think this might help you with your gloriosum. My mom grew hers with half way full of soil in the pot, that guy might not want too much soil. And it grew well in that setting💯
Yes! I tried not to overwhelm it when I planted it in here and my DIY mix is pretty aerated. It recovered from rot once before so I was cautious on watering it 😁

I bought a lemon lime thanks Melissa, I bought a lemon lime Maranta from an
online seller who lives in California just 2 hours away.
She sent me a 4" potted Calathea,
lush and beautiful, potted in just wet moss?
It isn't the finer peat moss.
It's soil is still very wet Oct 6, a week later.
There's a tiny change to some leaf tips, some brown.
Would it be worth it to repot with my chunky airy soil so soon
or wait another week?

Hab au h schonmal vor 1-2 Jahren da bestellt. Bekam statt einer epiprmenum marble queen eine aureum. :/ und hatte viel mehr Erde um Karton. ^^ war also nicht wirklich begeistert. 😅
I use liquid dirt. My fig leaf plant loves it, much biĝer leafs.
I had to turn the sound up to hear the stratum but That is really satisfying. I had no idea that it made that noise and I actually use it some..lol😅
I loveee that sound! It has to be dried out all the way and it fizzes like that but it's so satisfying!

This was very interesting to watch, learning a lot. Want to know I'm about to fertilizer my hoya not re pot . So if I sprinkle alittle Osmocote on top will it break down in soil?
I usually mix some in the top layer when I add some to plants I don't repot just so it's not sitting on top the soil :)

I don't care for peat moss anymore is the main reason! I didn't really make a video on it yet but once I get used to this new mix and I like it and my plants do fine in it then I will definitely share more!
I’ve gotten a fungal infection or bug and I’ve got root rot in so many plants!! I have a glorious that was a straight up grower but it might be? Ugh can you tell by a picture what a Philo glorious or a gloriosum?
I had the same issues when I reached the bottom of my rain barrel. My Rattlesnake (and Ctenanthe lubbersiana) looks just like yours. It's so frustrating!

I think it’s from all the crap they are spraying in the air. You should see what my birdbath looks like after a rain, not all the time but most of the time.
After watching you and others using semi hydro I think I’ll try that on my Rosia type Calathea that just dry out and die. Do you have any of these in Pon? Problem is it’s out of stock again. Been battling thrips and mites as they’ve spread to other plants and chomped on the leaves. Uggghh

I took it out of soil and put it in pon I've finally got some new growth coming through now, but it was cut right back to nothing like yours and for a while I thought to myself I'll take it as a loss and any new growth is a bonus 😅

Aw hopefully yours will do so well for you. I think they can be more challenging but some people do well with them! I think everyone has their share of plants that are harder to grow and some philos are definitely it for me 🙈

What is the anti fungal you use when replanting your plants?
Where do you get all these cute mushroom shirts from? 😍 and honestly I just use super thrive from Home Depot and Osmocote for fertilizer! Dr. Earth “pure gold” liquid fertilizer for outside plants.
The darker gray one is from target! They still have it in stock in the stores. The green one I believe I got from American eagle or urban outfitters last summer!

Hi, do you make your own potting soil?
I do yes! I always DIY my mixes. I tried out soil brand before but had a horrible experience with root rot. Never go back.
Fish Emulsion, water with it a least once a month.
I personally think the glory got under watered and the roots dry rotted I'm telling y from experience 😅
It’s definitely possible! I have had a time with soil this year with the other mix staying too wet and then my hot plant room dries everything out quickly. I was afraid to water half the time 😂
How is your Rattlesnake doing now?
When I have trouble with plants I watch others videos. Maybe find someone that have great succuss with those. I stay away from those. lol
