Tree fern fiber is amazing! Very airy, doesn’t compact and you can see when it’s dry (goes from dark brown when wet to light brown when dry). I switched all my plants from leca to that and it’s been a godsend! If you continue to use it, buy it in 40L bags…it’s a better bang for your buck.
I use it too, combined with a mix of perlite, fine orchid bark and fine charcoal. I have had amazing root growth and no root rot and my plants look healthy.
I feel you. My Albos have long since outgrown their poles and tipped sideways, an army of thrips and spider mites are trying to spread everywhere... We'll get to it eventually. :)
@GenRN @Karliah aww feel better soon! Both of you! I've definitely been there and you have to take care of yourself first. Doing the bare minimum helps when I'm not feeling my best certain weeks. Tackling plant chores seems daunting sometimes when there's so much to do but on a day that you're feeling better just start checking on everyone. Once you get going it'll make you feel better to take care of them. Doing care in batches helps too so it doesn't feel overwhelming and then treat yourself to your favorite drink or snack for getting some care done 🤗

I use as per my brand directions for every feeding along with fertilizer. I PH as do you and then I add Tribus. Thanks so much for this video you always have such good information!! Silica is not something you need to worry about getting on your skin. My tap water is actually high in silicates which is not great for my aquatic plants. They induce outbreaks of diatomaceous algae outbreaks which is unattractive but not dangerous. Most Sand is made of silica.

That happened with my manjula i picked up months ago from a lowes the ones with no growth points shot out 3 or 4 vines each must be something with growth hormones that they do with them
I heard somewhere that planting Albo's in soil is what causes the browning. I have have had barely any browning and all my indoor plants are planted in coco coir, cocohusk, perlite, pumice, worm castings aroid mix... Worth looking into instead of purchasing silica
In my experience browning has happened with poor root health...which is from poor quality soils. My new aroid mix is mostly yours minus the husk plus, charcoal and vermiculite. I no longer use peat moss or bagged cheap "soils" which holds onto water for wayyy too long. That combined with improper lighting for variegated plants as they need more to be able to photosynthesize efficiently. My albos were healthy and no browning until the rot happened in the crap sol soils mix.

I was JUST starting to research silica for my albo and thai con. My white sections are still ok but I want to try and keep that part of the leaf as healthy and beautiful as possible. Keep us updated on the results!

I’ve been using TPS Silica Gold in every watering for all my plants and my plants seems to love it. I’m still trying to save an Albo cutting that I received Dec 22 as a gift from my sister. I pulled it out of the soil it was in this past weekend and discovered that over 3/4 of the root had rot. I still don’t know if it is going to make it. I got some sphagnum moss yesterday and put it in that but I also ordered an airstone for water and I don’t know which is better. I’m a mess over this Albo because it has a lot of meaning to me since it is from my newly found sister and it’s my first Albo
May I suggest re-rooting in plain tap water, skip the moss and don't replant back into soil. It needs a healthy root system first. I have lots of monstera rot experience especially from this past summer in that shitty sol soils mix they were in. Tap water, clear glass jar and must change water out every 4-5 days especially if it gets murky and reallyyy high light. Cut off all the rot - when you cut into the root if you see any dark left cut more off. You can soak the rootball in water/hydrogen peroxide first for about 30 min then rinse. If you have a south or west window with some good sun stick it right there. Monitor daily and you should get new roots growing in 1-2 weeks and a fist size amount of roots in 6-7 weeks.
@@plantsbymelissa do I stick the node in the water too because there really isn’t much of a root left to be the only thing that goes in the water. I did soak in peroxide and water (50/50 mix) for about 20 min and rinsed. Thank you so much for any help
I put the node in the water. As long as the end isn’t freshly cut it should be fine. Changing the water frequently will help with any bacteria build up that will cause rotting.
I always like doing plant chores with you. After a stint in the hospital for appendicitis and surgery my babies were suffering. Hopefully I’ll continue on the mend and finish getting them back in shape.

I've been potting all of my Anthurium and other more finicky plants in tree fern recently and I love it!! The Anthurium in particular are just taking off :D tree fern is expensive so I usually mix it 50/50 with my normal chunky aroid mix (or pon) and every plant I've potted up so far is happier than ever.
I can see how this bag won't go far without amending it some 🙈 I think this size was around $45 so definitely pricey! I'm happy to hear your plants in it are taking off! I'm excited to try it for a alocasia or anthurium!

Im a big advocate of silica supplements. I add it to the water at least 30 min before use as it can fluctuate ph. I have done a foliar spray initially but now exclusively water it in, as I’m not a misting fan. Can’t wait to see your side by side results.
I used benefit roller lash for YEARS and I loved it because I really liked the wand but this past year or so I've been using the maybelline sky high mascara in black and it's definitely similar to the benefit one and it's less expensive :D

I was searching what silica to buy and was reading people were using it as a foliar spray. I read the res can become cloudy with silica in the water. I have SO much research and experimenting to do so I’m honestly just seeing how it goes this way. Not saying I’ll keep doing it like this 😊

Thank you! I feel like a pump sprayer wouldn't work for me. I have to be thorough most weeks for my own sanity and it's how I spot pests early so I can eradicate them. I can't quickly water and I have to water them well and let drain especially since my mixes are super aerated. I usually analyze them too and if something seems off with the health then I take mental notes. It seems like a lot of extra work and it is but some weeks I do quickly water and that's it if I'm not feeling my best. I really try to take my time because I've spent so long growing so many of them and they mean a lot to me!
Ive been using silica since the spring and definitely noticed the leaves on my monstera's are growing in thicker/sturdier, so it makes sense how it helps the white last longer
Yes, you can definitely add it in your water if that's what you want to do. You can also use it as a foliar spray. Adding it to your water can affect PH levels so you need to be more cautious with that. Using it as a foliar spray will make the product last longer as well. I may not always do it this way but just experimenting right now!
Another great video..I wanted to tell you that I use a tree fern fiber mix with all of my Anthurium..They LOVE it..but I use no drainage..a glass vessel with a leca layer at the bottom then a tree fern, chunky perlite and a small amount of pon mix..I’ve been very interested in silica..I trust you so I’m ordering the brand you purchased!❤️

I’m just experimenting! I may not always do it like this. I have so much research to do on it and I just wanted to start using it. I think having it mess with the PH in the water made me a little cautious using it in there right now. I’m just now getting the hang of using a liquid fertilizer so it’s a lot of new changes 😊
@@plantsbymelissa Okay gotcha. Ty for responding. I have been using the dyna gro brand foliage pro and silica for a few months now. The silica has to be added to water first and mixed up then you add the fertilizer. The silica lowers the Ph and the fertilizer brings it back up. Now from what I got out of research is the calcium and magnesium are what raises the Ph. I did use a ph test kit to experiment and test it out. I would definitely recommend ph testing to use silica. I am excited to see how the foliage spray goes. I’ve had great results so far with dyna gro. Ty for everything! You have no idea how much I have learned from you! I’m looking forward to the plant shop!

I really struggle trying to get my Scindapsis exotica to be happy and thriving plants. Any suggestions Melissa? Could you do a video sometime on how you care for yours and what substrate are they growing in and how you water them?
Where are you selling your seedlings?? I’m soooo ready to get one!! I too usually do set and forget new plants for a week or two, especially if they are super saturated to let it dry out and let the old leaves expire. That way when I do repot, all of what’s left is normally healthy and salvageable. Also, those manjulas are super disappointing. You can clearly see that some of them are cut so close to the nodes! Such a shame, however you’d be surprised that growth can come from the most random places at timeS! ❤❤
You're Manjula remembers me 2 plants I bought from a plant shop who buy in bulk their plants and I tool a Mican and a neon pothos there and they were all single cuttings put together in a pot. I had like 4 to 6 cutting in each pots. At least they're in good shape and I didn't lost any 😅 and they were like 8$ each! It's not surprising me from a big box store to see how careless they were taking care of 😢

Me too, I’ve been under watering for a bit and a couple of my plants are dying in some parts of it. There’s been a lot of crispy leaves and cut off branches. Won’t do that again.
I love the new marbled ppp's. I've been using tree fern fiber when planting starter plants and they seem to grow really quick. I'm looking forward to see the outcome of tree fern vs soil.
You could get juice that comes in clear plastic bottles, cut off the bottom and poking holes in the lid with your soldering iron use that as a handmade watering globe. Then you could have a war er ing globe for each pole
Hey Melissa, great repot vid! I absolutely love your Pink Princesses!!!! That marble variegation is stunning! I just repotted my root bound Pink Princess into pon so am curious to see how your tree fern fibre situation goes with yours. I have my Manjula in LECA with a tree fern fibre/spag moss mix pole (actually it's about a 20cm wide wall rather than a cylindrical pole) and she's thriving and growing larger leaves now. You'll definitely need to give us an update on yours. Am curious to see how they go. And the good thing about tree fern fibre is that it's not hydrophobic like spag moss and so there's hardly any spillage when you water the pole/pot. 😻
When Costa Farms first put the PPP out in the big box stores I was on the hunt for them & when I visited Tennessee I found one it wasn’t even that variegated but the hype of it I was just happy to have one. I then found one in NYC again not much variegation & gifted one for my birthday same thing. Last summer I decided to put all 3 of my burgundy philodendron in a pot. Recently buying 2 highly variegated marbled PPP I found at Lowe’s. So when I seen you throw out the not variegated section I clutched my pearls 😂. Then I thought she has more the enough plants to take care of I get not wanting the burgundy philodendron. After I finished watching this video I went to my burgundy philodendron & there was an all pink leaf that came out. Thought I shared don’t give up on your burgundy philodendrons they might revert back.

I usually fill mine up to the top almost or 3/4 full. Mine dry out fast but you don't have to fill them that full - as long as there's water in there it will wick up and the roots will reach for it. I have heard that about the pink princess! That would be cool if I had a dark cherry princess! Happy New year!! 🥳

Lovely plant chores video. When you did the repot I was gutted. This happened to me also I bought a golden pothos and only managed to save one cutting, unfortunately this is what the big box stores are doing. Love from the U.K.
I love the Green Escape. They are a really great nursery to work with. I've purchased a few starter plants from them and I've been very pleased with them plus they are in Florida where I live. I've never had an issue with root rot or pests.
I’ve purchased 2 starter plants (Splendid and Majestic) and both have root rot and Majestic plastic death plug. The roots were so fragile that by the time I removed death plug it had barely any roots left. Splendid had bone dry soil and dry brown roots. Sorry, but packing and inspection of plants should be as important as growing them.
I agree with you about how important it is to use well-aerated soil mixes. To that end I’ll be doing some research on the tree fern mix from New Zealand that you introduced. Truly a Plantologist Extraordinaire. Thanks.

I'm excited to use it more on a few other plants! Shop won't be open for at least a couple months. I'm trying to work a lot this month to get ahead of filming and editing so I can take time off and just focus the website. Filming and editing take up so much of my time and I can't afford to take weeks off without any videos going up :D

They don’t fit them :( it’s like the costa pots are a little too short and round.

Thank you! I feel like a pump sprayer wouldn't work for me. I have to be thorough most weeks for my own sanity and it's how I spot pests early so I can eradicate them. I can't quickly water and I have to water them well and let drain especially since my mixes are super aerated. I usually analyze them too and if something seems off with the health then I take mental notes. It seems like a lot of extra work and it is but some weeks I do quickly water and that's it if I'm not feeling my best. I really try to take my time because I've spent so long growing so many of them and they mean a lot to me!
I also got some tree fern fiber to try with my orchids. Haven’t use it yet so I’m really curious about your experience.
I think the orchid would love it! I was going to change my orchid from a water culture so maybe I will use this and see how it goes! 😁

Ive been using silica since the spring and definitely noticed the leaves on my monstera's are growing in thicker/sturdier, so it makes sense how it helps the white last longer

Yes, you can definitely add it in your water if that's what you want to do. You can also use it as a foliar spray. Adding it to your water can affect PH levels so you need to be more cautious with that. Using it as a foliar spray will make the product last longer as well. I may not always do it this way but just experimenting right now!

Another great video..I wanted to tell you that I use a tree fern fiber mix with all of my Anthurium..They LOVE it..but I use no drainage..a glass vessel with a leca layer at the bottom then a tree fern, chunky perlite and a small amount of pon mix..I’ve been very interested in silica..I trust you so I’m ordering the brand you purchased!❤️

I think the silica is a great quality from what I gathered. I guess time will tell on how it does for me. I went reading some reddit forums on it if you type it in the search you can learn more about what others are doing with it!
You have definitely also encouraged me to place my Alocasia in pon.. I also placed one of my Anthurium seedling into pon..all are doing great so far! ❤️🪴

Hey girl thank you for always sharing your plant projects with us. Wondering why you decided to use silica as a foliage spray instead of when you water. I’ve been using it in my nutrient water.
I’m just experimenting! I may not always do it like this. I have so much research to do on it and I just wanted to start using it. I think having it mess with the PH in the water made me a little cautious using it in there right now. I’m just now getting the hang of using a liquid fertilizer so it’s a lot of new changes 😊
@@plantsbymelissa Okay gotcha. Ty for responding. I have been using the dyna gro brand foliage pro and silica for a few months now. The silica has to be added to water first and mixed up then you add the fertilizer. The silica lowers the Ph and the fertilizer brings it back up. Now from what I got out of research is the calcium and magnesium are what raises the Ph. I did use a ph test kit to experiment and test it out. I would definitely recommend ph testing to use silica. I am excited to see how the foliage spray goes. I’ve had great results so far with dyna gro. Ty for everything! You have no idea how much I have learned from you! I’m looking forward to the plant shop!

I too usually do set and forget new plants for a week or two, especially if they are super saturated to let it dry out and let the old leaves expire. That way when I do repot, all of what’s left is normally healthy and salvageable.
Also, those manjulas are super disappointing. You can clearly see that some of them are cut so close to the nodes! Such a shame, however you’d be surprised that growth can come from the most random places at timeS! ❤❤
You're Manjula remembers me 2 plants I bought from a plant shop who buy in bulk their plants and I tool a Mican and a neon pothos there and they were all single cuttings put together in a pot. I had like 4 to 6 cutting in each pots. At least they're in good shape and I didn't lost any 😅 and they were like 8$ each!
It's not surprising me from a big box store to see how careless they were taking care of 😢

Me too, I’ve been under watering for a bit and a couple of my plants are dying in some parts of it. There’s been a lot of crispy leaves and cut off branches. Won’t do that again.

You could get juice that comes in clear plastic bottles, cut off the bottom and poking holes in the lid with your soldering iron use that as a handmade watering globe. Then you could have a war er ing globe for each pole

I see the tree fern fiber mixed with perlite, and pon too. There’s a variety of substrates that can be mixed with it.
I dont know if i got a bad batch of tree fern fiber, but mine was not fluffy at all, it was like a bunch of little sticks

Because I want to try it as a foliar spray first! No specific reason! I may eventually add it to my water :D

Hey Melissa, great repot vid! I absolutely love your Pink Princesses!!!! That marble variegation is stunning! I just repotted my root bound Pink Princess into pon so am curious to see how your tree fern fibre situation goes with yours. I have my Manjula in LECA with a tree fern fibre/spag moss mix pole (actually it's about a 20cm wide wall rather than a cylindrical pole) and she's thriving and growing larger leaves now. You'll definitely need to give us an update on yours. Am curious to see how they go. And the good thing about tree fern fibre is that it's not hydrophobic like spag moss and so there's hardly any spillage when you water the pole/pot. 😻

When Costa Farms first put the PPP out in the big box stores I was on the hunt for them & when I visited Tennessee I found one it wasn’t even that variegated but the hype of it I was just happy to have one. I then found one in NYC again not much variegation & gifted one for my birthday same thing. Last summer I decided to put all 3 of my burgundy philodendron in a pot. Recently buying 2 highly variegated marbled PPP I found at Lowe’s. So when I seen you throw out the not variegated section I clutched my pearls 😂. Then I thought she has more the enough plants to take care of I get not wanting the burgundy philodendron. After I finished watching this video I went to my burgundy philodendron & there was an all pink leaf that came out. Thought I shared don’t give up on your burgundy philodendrons they might revert back.

My manjula grow like crazy! Not sure why but they are huge and very long vines, I do put them outside in summer tho.
My marble pink princesses from costa are crazy beautiful they look more like a dark cherry than a ppp, I read someplace there is a dark cherry princess???
I usually fill mine up to the top almost or 3/4 full. Mine dry out fast but you don't have to fill them that full - as long as there's water in there it will wick up and the roots will reach for it. I have heard that about the pink princess! That would be cool if I had a dark cherry princess! Happy New year!! 🥳

Lovely plant chores video. When you did the repot I was gutted. This happened to me also I bought a golden pothos and only managed to save one cutting, unfortunately this is what the big box stores are doing.

I love the Green Escape. They are a really great nursery to work with. I've purchased a few starter plants from them and I've been very pleased with them plus they are in Florida where I live. I've never had an issue with root rot or pests.
I’ve purchased 2 starter plants (Splendid and Majestic) and both have root rot and Majestic plastic death plug. The roots were so fragile that by the time I removed death plug it had barely any roots left. Splendid had bone dry soil and dry brown roots. Sorry, but packing and inspection of plants should be as important as growing them.

I'm excited to use it more on a few other plants! Shop won't be open for at least a couple months. I'm trying to work a lot this month to get ahead of filming and editing so I can take time off and just focus the website. Filming and editing take up so much of my time and I can't afford to take weeks off without any videos going up :D
