Tommy is the lead singer. Probably their biggest hit in 68. Had a string of hits. I think we're Alone Now, Mony Mony, Sweet Cherry Wine, Crystal blue Persuasion, Ball of Fire and more. This had the psychedelic sound of late 69s which I dug still do.

The main guitar at the first of the song was being played through a "Leslie," which is the circulating, 4-horned thing that gives an organ it's distinctive sound. The next guitar was played with a wah-wah pedal. The 3rd guitar was played with a fuzz tone effect. The outro at the end was saying Crimson and Clover over and over, but recorded backward, which a lot of people never figured out what was being sang.

Tommy J. grew up in my home town (Niles Mi) and was classmates with my older brother. The story of how their first hit, Hanky Panky, became a #1 hit is really interesting. It was recorded by the local radio station (WNIL) and it became a local hit, though being a small station didn't have the resources to promote it properly. Much later a Pittsburg club owner heard it and started playing it in his club and it became popular and aired on the radio. Word got back to Tommy and since the band broke up he had to form a new Shondells band. Nice react y'all!

They had a lot of great hits such as "Hanky Panky", "Crimson & Clover", "I Think We're Alone Now", "Mirage", "Mony Mony", "Sweet Cherry Wine", "Ball Of Fire", "Do Something To Me" & "Crystal Blue Persuasion". I bought this 45 record when it came out brand new back in the day. The effect you are hearing is a very heavy tremolo effect... on the guitar at first, then added to the mixed vocal track at the end.

    • @calebclunie4001
      @calebclunie4001 2 года назад

Yes. Tremolo. It's like opening and closing a gate, and the frequency of that motion is what gives that effect. One may be able to replicate the effect, by manually blocking, and unblocking one's ears, in rapid succession.

The first rock album I bought was The Best of Tommy James and the Shondells since this was one of my first favorite songs. It was released in late 1968 and reached number one in early 1969, when I bought this album at age 7. Back in the day, a number of artists didn't release albums as such. They released singles. Then when there were enough singles to make an album, they released a collection of those singles as a "Best of" album, which was the case with The Best of Tommy James and the Shondells.
Other great Tommy James and the Shondells songs to react to:
Sweet Cherry Wine, Crystal Blue Persuasion, I Think We're Alone Now, Mirage, Ball of Fire, Mony Mony (Covered famously in the 1980s by Billy Idol), Hanky Panky (Mony Mony and Hanky Panky are more early dance hits from the mid 1960s -- not many words in either song, but it's about the vibe and the rhythm for both of them -- before TJ and the S went psychedelic.
In addition to these, another great song to react to is Tommy James' first hit without the Shondells, "Draggin' the Line." Also, for something interesting, you can check out Joan Jett's cover of Crimson and Clover.
    Love you guys!

When I was a young kid, I got pumped full of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) in the dentist's chair. There was a radio playing and after a little while, whatever was on the air sounded like the last segment of this song. It was a phenomenal experience. In fact, the Beatles' "Good Morning, Good Morning" is the song from that day I remember the most. That added a trip factor of its own kind to the gassing up at the dentist's office experience.

Crimson clover is a plant used as a nitrogen fixer in soil and as a forage for livestock. Mostly seen now as a legume (bean) cover crop. It has blood red blooms and a field planted in crimson clover is beyond beautiful.

I've always loved this song. Just for fun, you might try Joan Jet's cover of this song. Also quite good.

That was a wah wah pedal on the guitar effects that made them sound the way they're named. Not a steel guitar. Then they had some fuzz tone effect. These guys were at the forefront of psychedelic music and technologies.

Dig that vocal effect at the end. I'm guessing they ran the vocals through a tremolo unit on a guitar amplifier. A lot of the Fenders back in the day had tremolos. I just looked it up, it was an Ampeg amp.

It's an electric guitar with a distortion pedal turned on at some points and off at other points. They're called pedals because they typically sit on the floor and are switched by stepping on them.

late '60s. radio shack transistor radio mounted on the handlebars of my bicycle. crimson and clover. riding around the water tower in my little home town.

Guitarists have small boxes with foot pedals, they put on the floor and hook up, to add different effects to their electric guitars, some also have a handle to manipulate on the actual guitar, to warp the sound their is also a clear plastic tube caused, effect that used to be popular. They turn the effect on or off as desired to fit the part they are currently playing.
Thay also can do mike effects as well.

My sister got to see them at a local establishment. Afterwards we got into conversations and he invited us to wait u til the meet and greet was over. He gave us some stuff but we got to talk to home for about an extra hour. He is a very cordial person and very curious about local traditions. I still have Tommy Jamesl autographed CD.

Two of the sounds you are referring to are: 1) his eletric guitar plugged into a wah-wah pedal, which is used with the foot while playing, -- 2) his guitar plugged into a fuzz box.

I always thought "crimson and clover" referred to the singer's feeling of falling for the woman he'd seen. People sometimes flush red (crimson) when they're attracted to somebody, and clover is a summer flower with a sweet scent.

Love this song and your reaction to it. These guys had some great music, and I like 99% of everything they made. But, this and Crystal Blue Persuasion both had some otherworldly instrumental flavorings. You gotta do more Tommy James and The Shondells. Keep on keeping on, doing what you do. Peace
