These "older" gays paved and lead the way for the way we live today. The young queens prancing around in feathers, beads wearing hot shorts have these fine gentlemen to thank for. These men sacrificed everything for us. We should salute them. We should respect them. We should honor them in every way possible.
Well said. I am a 68 yo gay man. Younger gay men do not realize what we went through. Never take your liberties for granted, the fight for equality must continue!!
These gentlemen are very likeable. Their faces are all lit up, they must be happy together. I'd love to have men like them as uncles. I know they have some interesting stories to share.
I LOVE Jessay! He is willing to be transparent with things that are hurtful and damaging. He lost his “home,” he is the last family member from his era. He opened about. One of his most painful memories, and ends with his growth. Thank you Jessay.🥰😊
Thank you for chronicling the stories of our gay ancestors and transcestors, who had to bear the trauma of AIDS and the constant fear of being outed and/or ostracized. And thank you for reminding us about heroes like Elizabeth Taylor, who embraced the community without judgement, and changed the trajectory of AIDS research and public perception.
Hello my dear. 50+ year ally here. First gay man I met was my cousin and his boyfriend. I was very young, but I knew I loved spending time with them. Of course my Aunt would never accept and always said they were roommates. The history of these wonderful men and others in the community is vitally important for queer youth to hear from. I got threatened just walking into a gay bar back in the day. I lost a lot of friends, and still have friends from back in the day. Queer history is so important. Thanks for doing this. If I make it to Palm Springs I must have a cocktail with these lovely men!
I love the way these guys embrace their age with a great degree of reality. Many over 60 Gay Males fight to NOT be their age every day with often disastrous results. Every vlog/interview/production of theirs I've viewed has be heartwarming. Thanks, Matt, for adding to their stories. Cheers All. 🏳🌈🏳⚧
I was in my 20s in the 1980s ….. we lost so many beautiful young men ….lovers, friends ….. it was a horror story but there was also love and humour and bravery …..I refuse to remember my 20s as a horror story ….it was that but it was also so much more ….
I haven’t seen the old gays for awhile, I do like that someone called them the Golden Gays. I love that title even more. I’m so happy to see them. I loved this.
This generation takes for granted what the gays when through back then. People were dying but the thousands. Could u imagine losing all your best friends?
MC, as an older gay ( not as old as them!) I understand where they are coming from. They -WE-are fonts of knowledge that the young gays could easily toss in trash. Glad you are honoring them! Nice work my dear. 💜💎🌈💋
Hi Matt it was nice to see the old gay guys I'm 72-year-old trans woman been trans all my life I kind of understand what they're going through and I wish them all the love in the world God bless you you're a godsend💜
Ain't it funny how they lived some of the happiest eras of modern history, yet they couldn't be as happy being who they are in the prime? The irony!! They've also proven to be resilient and loving; that's how they've made it this far.
You know I am excited for this one, Matt!! Just saved to watch later tonight with Bill. Always exciting to see a new episode, but this is truly special and enticing... 😍
This video and your video titled "Gay Age Gap Couple" are some of the most compelling I've seen from you. Hearing their stories is fascinating. Your conversation with the 98 year old gentleman in the Age Gap video was profound. I think we forget how much we can learn from older people.
My husband and I have been together 10 years, 4 of them married. We are in our mid 40's, (45 for me tomorrow actually). As we get older we think about our community and the importance of having good friends around us and doing more in our community. These lovely gentlemen are a huge inspiration. When I see them come on my screen I always try to watch and listen to them. It's the very least I can do to show them they are respected, loved, and celebrated. Even though they have no clue who I am. We owe that generation a HUGE thank you and hug for what they have gone through and more importantly a thank you for being a part of where we are today. Thank you The Old Gays! ♥
I just love these men. Thank you for asking them about their experiences. So happy for their success, but even happier to see their close bond with each other. Robert is an amazing artist. Love your videos!
I love this so much!!! Our elders in the community tend to be forgotten or ignored so much. I'm glad to see there's a shift in the culture now. These are the people who paved the way for us to be who we are. It brings me joy to see that they continue to get their flowers. 💖💖💖
Loved this so much. I've been following those guys for a while and love hearing their stories and histories. I have to say that even when I was in my teens and twenties, I never had the ageism thing, in fact I really preferred and enjoyed befriending older folks, gay and straight, as I found them much more interesting. I wanted to hear everything about their lives and their histories and I'm still that way, even though I just turned 69 myself. I'm one of those people that could not care less what people think about my age, but I do realize there is lots of ageism towards older gays especially, with words like "trolls" etc. these guys are so full of life and so positive it's inspiring. I never thought I would get older lol, and always took care of myself but health problems started about 15 years ago and it's been one thing after the other, but I fight it as best I can. I think of all of those lost in the AIDS epidemic in their twenties and thirties and I realize how lucky and grateful I am. This was so well done and thanks for all you do.❤
I absolutely love these guys. Found them by complete accident when I was having my gender/sexuality crisis in my early 20s and they made me feel safe. Which I know is dumb because I've never met these guys, but they're just such nice people and it assured me life will be ok for me someday.
I am a 58 year English woman who had never heard of these lovely men. They have stolen my heart, what a truly beautiful group of men they are. I hope I see more of them and so wish they were my friends. Just love them so much. ❤❤❤❤
i worried about these amazing souls in 2020 as much as i did my own family. they are an amazing representation of a generation that was nearly wiped out, robbing the world of all of the potential contributions they could have offered. we are lucky to hear their stories
Yasss... Matt as one of the Old Gays.... I see it! Matt is an old soul, and a dear one. These gentlemen were a delight to watch. Thank you, as always, Matt, for gifting us this experience. Love you.
I love this so much. I always see them together but it was really great to hear stories of them seperately also. They are the best. You always do such great interviews. I love that I found tbis channel. ❤
Yours is the best interview I've heard or seen of the old gays. I'm their age and was so uplifted and learned so much for my own life through your interview. Thanks
I enjoyed the African American man’s words on his father dying. I hate my mother because she was a physically and psychologically abusive parent when I was a child. She never gave up trying to control me in adulthood. I’m secretly happy she has decided to go because I won’t have to deal with her anger, judgement, and abuse any longer, but at the same time, I have to find a way to mourn not having a loving mother in my life. Instead, I have a mother who beat on a door, threatened to shoot me with a gun, threw an air purifier and a glass carafe at me in 2022. My crimes, trimming some rose bushes along a walkway to our front door so trick or treaters and delivery men could use the walkway. The roses are fine. They are blooming beautifully. My other crime, forgetting to lock a deadbolt on one door when I left their house. The regular lock was latched on that door. I was keeping an eye on my parent’s house while they were out of town. Fortunately, as an adult I have options that I didn’t have as a child. I can leave her house, as I have my own home, car, and income. To never deal with her temper and abusive behavior again is going to be a relief but sad at the same time.
@@indiaandrews6996 its normal to feel a sense of relief when parents pass …. I love my Mum and Dad but they were hard work and growing up in a home with alcohol and violence I still deal with the personal répercussions to this very day …
All your interviews are great Matt.... But this one touched my heart. These men are our communities national treasure no doubt. What a life these gentleman have lived. I absolutely love them and hope we have them for many more years to come. 😘
By Far this is the best interview he s taken so far. We should always honor and remember all these brave people who paved the way before us, they fought, they persevered, they won for us to be free to express our truth when being gay was a crime. Matt congratulations to you and these incredible gents I m so touched by all all of them by every word of this interview ❤🎉
Beautiful people! I want to hear more about their lives, where they grew up, what their lives were like growing up gay. I’d love to see part 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5! A deep dive on who they are. We talk about younger people having old souls, but I love that these men are old, with young souls! I believe that a big part of age is in your mind!
Thank you. I enjoyed this and hope you will continue to cover subjects over 50 more frequently. By doing so, you will meaningfully challenge the ugly ageism that damages not just the lives but legacies of activism and sacrifice of older gays.
OMG i did not expect to CRY(weep)this Hard from this interview iLOVE the OldGays here in PalmSprings i have such an oLd soul thanks for this Interview and being here in PalmSprings which i had seen you to grab a picture with YOU💚🤳🏾🤞🏾
I've suffered from psychosomatic illnesses. Once I was in so much pain that I couldn't walk or even stand up for 2 days. I laid on my bedroom floor for 16 hours until my roommate finally called 911. I spent the next day and half at the hospital. I've had others with different symptoms. All of my symptoms were _very real_ to my body, but my mind was creating them. If your mind can make your body sick, why wouldn't someone be able to make themselves better with it as well?
Such an inspiring video. I’m Black Gay Senior Citizen still navigating life. My older brother died of the AIDS virus in 1989, but I have an out lesbian sister who’s had a wife for the last 35 years. We live in a world where you can be true to yourself and I’m still trying to navigate it
