I currently own two of the 35mm Summilux FLE v2 and one 75mm APO Summicron f/2. I think the 35mm APO would be the perfect lens, but I couldn't justify buying one just to reduce chromatic aberrations. I also like the character that the summilux lenses give, however I must say from shooting the 75mm APO that it's also very beautiful and I didn't feel like I was missing the extra stop of light. However that might be due to the fact that it's not my main lens. I use my 35mm Lux like 90-95% of the time and in some cases I actually do like having that extra stop. It'd be a dream to eventually get an entire range of focal lengths in their APO variants, so 35mm, 50mm, 75mm (which I own) and 90mm. I think that would cover pretty much 99% of my needs. I'd maybe add a 28mm and a 135mm to this range and that would complete it for me.
I have the 75 APO also. That lens is very sharp and renders beautiful colors. I love it for portraits and car photos. but admittedly I do not use it often because of the large size. I like to carry very light. I just received the 50 APO last week, which replaced my 50 Summilux. I wanted no chromatic abberation, sharpness, small size, and matching APO across my line. I’ll do a video on the 50 soon. Now have 35 APO- 50 APO- 75 APO Summicron. (and 28 Elmarit for my MP). not really interested in shooting 90. I am wondering if I can (or should) sell my 75, and get all the way down to 28 Elmarit- 35 APO- 50 APO.
@@sc1 Your collection is really impressive and I can definitely see the appeal of the APO. Love that you're enjoying your new 50! As for longer focal lengths such as the 75mm and 90mm, I can understand why these don't get much use for you. These are definitely "situational" lenses and might not be worth it for the occasional use. Personally I still want to have them because certain compositions work really well with them, given how much compression they give against the background, not to mention the beautiful blur/bokeh.
S C, you may have just changed my mind. I was seriously leaning towards the 35 Lux MK II. As I understand it, these two lenses are very compatible at f2. And nearly indistinguishable when stopped down further. When considering that - the significant price difference between these gems immediately comes into play. And because I shoot at lot in B&W, CA really isn’t as big a concern for me. But size is always a factor. And given my penchant for B&W, high megapixels of the M11/M11 M, and future M digital bodies, plus the amazing images APO glass and film create - you probably just cost me money. You're Welcome! That's what I'm here for! 🤑. But seriously, this is a great lens. I think both are center sharp at f/2, but the APO only slightly sharper than the FLE at the edges. But even this is barely noticeable and you pay for that extra sharpness. And the advantage goes away past f/2.8 or so. The APO is smaller and lighter, but again the difference is small. For me, size and sharpness were minor factors, but the tipping point was no purple/green fringing, and maxing out on M lens quality glass. I also felt I did not need the extra stop of light. f/1.4 can be difficulty to focus, and I can get bokeh on the APO with clever positioning, and the M11 helps out in low light anyway.
Awesome lens and perfect fit for an M body. If I could choose only one lens, this one would be a contender. But have to sell my entire kit to afford one 😂
Great review, 35mm Apo is my only M lens for my m11p, considering for a 50mm lens, which one you recommend? Noctilux-M 50 f/0.95 ASPH seems very interesting but it's a 2008 lens so maybe I should wait for a update version?
I recommend the 50 APO. I just received it, and the first few images are coming out just as well as the 35 APO. The Noctilux will give you that dreamy look, but it is very large. And difficult to nail focus at 0.95. You will get a lot of missed shots. Suggest you rent one, or try a cheaper TT Artisans 0.95 before pulling the trigger on the Noctilux. Consider the 50 Summilux only if you want more bokeh and low light than the 50 APO.
My 50 APO review will come out soon. But for now, I think they are equal in every aspect, except the 35APO has the added bonus of close focus. (And the 35 APO looks better!). Image quality looks to be equal, size and weight are almost equal.

@@sc1 Here is my experience and observation, 50 APO is SHARP but the colors are between muted or flat compared to the 35 APO. Hence why the 50 APO is made for monochrome photos. The 35 APO is almost just as SHARP in a flat way compared to the 50 APO but the 35 APO has colors near a Summilux FLE compared to the 50 APO.

This is a great review indeed. The lens is phenomenal. It is the sharpest M mount lens period. The close focus is a bonus. I own many Voigtländer lenses including the 35 APO Lanthar F2 lens to pair with my M11P. The only Leica lens I own is the Summilux 50mm F1.4 ASPH new version with closer minimum focus. My next Leica lens will definitely be the one you just reviewed.
