    Matt! I have already delivered my rant on the subject of Leica lenses elsewhere, but just briefly: RUclips hosts vids from photographers showing shelves crammed full of hyper expensive lenses with very little difference between them. It's as if the photographer thinks he needs to choose a particular lens for each subject or sight that he wants to shoot.
    I contrast this with the display of Leica lenses, all two or three of them, at the museum dedicated to the extraordinary Ara Güler in Istanbul. Are the modern lens collectors perhaps amazed that such striking photos could be achieved with just a couple of old lenses? In my opinion, those shelves stuffed full of lenses represent the power of marketing far more than advances in photography.

      Hi Jeremy, ah yes now I understand a comment I just replied to. Yes 100% for sunny 16 style photos at infinity. Yes modern lenses might be smaller faster, lighter, focus closer, render differently but if you shoot at f11 against a white wall with the light behind you can use any similar FL lens..

    I made a specific test at low light (high ISO) about APO vs Lux. It might sound surpricing, but the APO is a clear winner. At same low light condition, the APO pictures (at F2) feature more details than the Lux ones (at F1.4), even if the ISO was much higher in the APO pictures.

    Hello Matt, thank you for your experience!
    What do you think of a 35 APO on an M6?
    I hesitate to replace my 35 IV...
    This would be for a coherent kit 35APO + 75APO or keep the 35IV + 75 1.4... Dilem!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  6 месяцев назад

      It might be too good for film resolution but you could. Close focus isn’t a benefit with film too. 75 APO is good on film. I used the same in the past. 75Lux is better for digital.

      A 35 APO on an M6 may be wasted then.. So either a 35 "classic" 1.4 or 2 or keep my 35 IV with the 75 APO

  • @rodwhite6308
    @rodwhite6308 Год назад +3

    I upgraded my 35lux FLE to the new 2022 version when it first came out. I was drawn in thinking the close focus would be a game changer and it certainly helps in making it a more ‘universal’ travel lens but 40cm MFD isn’t anywhere near as game changing as 30cm on the APO as you rightly point out. Having tried both of these lenses, I prefer the lux especially when balanced against the even further cost of upgrading to the APO. Being honest, I wish I’d just stuck with the original 35lux FLE and saved the money as it too was amazing. It’s interesting now seeing all the comments about the new 50lux. Other than the 35APO, the 75APO which comes in much cheaper, gets you closer to your shot than anything else and oddly can be purchased mint, used for around the same cost as upgrading a 35lux FLE to the 2022 version. The APO is not only a large step further more expensive, but also rare as hens teeth because they are so hard to make.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  Год назад

      Thanks Rod and yes they are rare for sure. A German photographer brought one to a London workshop last year and that was one of the first copies in Germany. Yes 30cm makes the difference.

    I’ve shot with both but purchased the Lux. The APO was absolutely amazing but I liked the character of the Lux and ability to open up another stop. The other thing is that _IMO_ the Lux stopped down to f2 looks _nearly_ indistinguishable from the APO.

    Matt - I really enjoy your stuff. You have a nice, peaceful sincere attitude about you, and your videos are pleasant to watch. I don't know why I watch you, because I shoot Nikon FF for all my paid gigs, weddings and events - and for my personal stuff. I could never buy a Leica, because stuff in Australia is crazy expensive. I just looked up my camera store and the SL2s body only is just on $9,000, (I don't like rangefinder cameras for my eyes), and the 24-90 SL zoom is $8,500 - oh boy. I wouldn't shoot them anyway, because Leica do not offer any camera with a flip out screen and I shoot about 80% of all my stuff on the flip out screen. Anyway, I got sidetracked. My question is, is there stuff on your Patreon that I would benefit from being a non-Leica shooter. Do you think I would get the value from the other stuff you offer and what would that be. Do you have any other non-Leica guys on your Patreon, or would I be the only one? If you I'd benefit, I'd be happy to join!

    I know that I might be the odd one out, but where is Leica going with this sort of pricing? I don't know who is in charge of their pricing or marketing, but it seems that the they are relying on the Leica fans with deep pockets to pay for these lenses and no questions asked. The other oddity that doesn't make any sense to me is , given the performance of the new sesnors ( 60MP for the new M11 Mono ) and the resolving power of these lenses, what real world benefit could be had from shooting these combinations handheld? As far as I know Leica M Digital cameras have no IBIS, so at 60MP a mere camera shake of few hundreds of a milimeter will make all the resolution advantages of these lenses redundant. Surely you don't pay $8000 for a lens, mount it to a Leica M body and then proceed to mount it on a solid super damped tripod? Thats what we normal people do with our old M bodies and lenses when trying to maximise the resolution.

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I know that I am ancient, and so are my expectations, but I paid just short of £2000 ( this was top wack price at the time ) for my M6 TTL and a Leica 35 F1.4 Summilux ASPH, both absolutely mint nearly 18 years ago, from a Leica Premium dealer. Now, that is about £4500 today. The cost of an M6 and a Summilux ASPH today is around £11000. You see where I am coming from I hope. This is the sort of money we were expecting to pay for a full Hasselblad system including 4 or 5 lenses and several backs. Unless people are made of money, and I do admit that these days some are, this sort of pricing doesn't make sense.
