    Great video! For mostly color film shooting which is your preference? I recall you saying you loved the 50 APO on film since it looked like medium format. Do you feel the same about the 35 APO?

      In fact I’ll be releasing a video about 35 apo on film next week or so. I took it with me to Japan and shot several rolls with it. In short, it’s amazing, but with film you don’t notice the resolution improvements as much as you would on a 40-60mp digital sensor. Keep an out for the review if you’re interested.

    Jimmy,
    Thank you for this and other videos. What is your experience with the close focus on the 35 Summilux FLE II? I bought one but found out that at minimum focus distance, the center at f/2 is not as sharp as the Voigtlander APO 35 at the same aperture.. It is also not as sharp as the new (2023) Summilux 50mm at f/1.4 through f/5.6. I am talking about at minimum focus distance only. Other distances are good.
    I am wondering if I have a bad copy or if this is the general behavior.
    Thank you.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Год назад +1

      Yeah it’s certainly not as sharp as an APO lens. Not sure about comparing with the new 50 lux. To be honest I didn’t do too much close focus testing/shooting as I prefer use the rangefinder focus mechanism as opposed to live view. I’d say post this on I-Leica forum there might be ppl with more experience with close focus on this lens.

    Really a nice video, clear, finally a comparative point of view between three excellent lenses. The best of all, however, I think is the SL Apo Summicron 2/35 Asph., but that's another story. Perhaps it could be interesting to highlight the extraordinary characteristics of this lens by comparing it with the Apo 2/35 for “M” of this video. Thanks anyway, great job.❤

    Jimmy, it's Joe again. I recently purchased the FLE ii. However, I find when I turn the focus ring to infinity, it actually is not "sharp". I had to make some micro adjustments. This is seen both through the Visoflex and the RF. Is this due to chromatic aberration? focus past infinity, which may need to recalibrate? or simply a faulty unit? Cheers.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  3 месяца назад +1

    I went with the Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 iii and Summicron. If I shoot film, the F1.2 can be important. The Summicron gives me the best balance in terms of size, performance, and price. Together they are still cheaper than the Summilux and APO Cron. Yes, I still see a little fringing from my Cron at wide open but majority can be corrected in post. What do you think about using these M lenses for the SL2-S? Would like to see if they perform the same as the digital M bodies.

    Nice review, thank you! :) I hear magnification with the FLE 2 only works with live view, so if you only have an analog M like me, then this is not an argument for the version 2. Beautiful lens though, in every way. I am a bit concerned about Leica quality as well. I cannot comprehend them signing off on the quality of individual lenses in a certificate that people have trusted for years, only to then get wobbly parts. What don’t they notice, or what happens between signing and the product you hold in your hand for the first time? Especially bad if they know about certain faults before they issue the certificate and then accept that some might get returned, as if a known design issue. Maybe it is only with certain lenses like the Summilux reissue, maybe they only need to sort out some early production line issues, but I fear this could hurt the company if this keeps going on, be it products some batches into the making or new announcements suffering from quality issues more often. This is the only reason stopping me from getting a Summilux reissue, otherwise I would have already ordered one. At least I am richer by not having spent that money :). Could you provide an update once you have got a new copy of yours? I am not sure the redesigned hood (I believe it was) would solve this issue you have since it sounds like it is a different one.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Год назад

      Thank you for the comment. The redesigned hood is to solve another “engineering marvel”: no way to put the hood on with filter, even though they supplied two of them. One cannot physically fit with the filter on, the other creates hard vignettes.

    I’ve got the 35mm APO Summicron…but it’s the L mount version. Focuses down to 27cm too. That’s a *massive* 3cm closer than the M version! 🤣 Image quality: you don’t even have to think about it. Stop down for more depth of field, open up for less.
    If I were buying a 35mm lens today, though, I think I’d go for the M version instead. Being all mechanical it doesn’t depend on any particular camera to work…you can adapt it to lots of different cameras.

    The APO 35 M is indeed a lot of money but it’s not expensive, because it is a very allround lens for travelling if you don’t want to travel relatively light and can’t bring all your lenses. If you own already a few 35’s like me, and you can sell them favorably because they are Leica’s, the price is actually quite low, because it covers the properties of a few older lenses. The Summicron 35 iv for instance has the same sympathtic bokeh as the APO.
