Thanks for this. I've tried every brush you mentioned except the Thater 4125 (just the 4292 2-band and 4376 3-band) and definitely need to get some hands-on experience with one. BTW, thanks for the shout-out about "someone" asking the loft on the Shavemac. Look ma, I'm famous! :) We both prefer the same kind of brushes, and that's one reason I continue to follow your postings. Always interesting and up to date.
thanks for sharing your top brushes and the reasons you like them i'm also a big fan of the bulb shape i love the way they spay open but don't create a huge contact area that is just too big for my liking, especially when i get to lathering around my lips 24mm seems to be my sweet spot currently and you've mentioned 3 i'd consider buying next time i'm buying big thanks
+azhawk516 Paul, I'm finally finally upgrading to my first quality brush. I've been using a Semogue Boar brush for a couple years now and am somewhat tired of having too much splay and not much backbone. I've been reading reviews and have finally narrowed my choice down to - a Simpson Chubby 2, a Duke 3, or a Thater, or a Savile Row 3824. The criteria that I want are softness, ample backbone, and great flow-through. Out of these choices, if you had to go with just one for the time being, which would you advise given those criteria?
+Azzurri82 i think the ones with the best balance of backbone, softness, and flow through are the Thater bulb shaped knots, or the Savile Row. The Thater has a bit lower loft vs the Sevile Row so it has a touch more backbone. If I had to pick just one I would go with the Thater two band in a bulb shaped knot. The Thater Silvertips in a bulb are great as well. I think coming from a Semogue boar, you will probably prefer the backbone of the two band Thater bulb. The Chubby is very dense but a bit of larger hog. I think the Chubby 2 is more expensive than the Thater or the Sevile Row.
I wound up going with the Savile Row last year and I do love it. A year later though and I'm looking to add a second brush to my arsenal. Seems my tastes have change a bit and while I appreciate the backbone, flow-through, and softness of my Savile Row 3824, I think I'm now looking for something that is denser and scrubby. Not looking for "tough as nails" but certainly not looking for just a tiny bit of scrubbiness either. Would you be so kind as to lend me some of your wisdom again on your preference, given the change in style? Chubby, Thater, Rooney? I know how much you like the Thater but is it scrubby? THANKS, Paul!
This Chubby 2 is what Simpson call it's Silvertip badger. It is a premium two band knot. This knot has great backbone like the Manchurian badger, but the tips are much softer. Simpson only releases brushes with this hair every now and then. It's a special one for sure.
+Ferdinand LuDo I got this one from the Simpson website. The only release them every now and then. You have to keep your eye out on their site for the "special" brushes.
Daniel this Chubby 2 is in what Simpson calls Silvertip Badger which is a two band knot that has really good backbone, but is softer than Manchurian. I got this brush on the Simpson website, it is a special hair grade like the Manchurian, they usually have a limited number of brushes with these knots that they offer from time to time.
Snapback Reef I love the Savile Row brushes the backbone is pretty good. Some others in the same price range to consider are the Thater 49125, 4125 silver tips, and the Vie Long Lord Randal silvertip. If you want backbone in your silvertip brushes definitely go with the bulb shape.
Hey. Need your opinion. I've only been wet shaving for approx 7 months now (DE) and been using a boar hair (which i do like) but was thinking of purchasing a badger finally. In your opinion -without breaking my bank- is it possible to find a decent badger for under $100 and if so, what could you recommend. I'd really appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance.
For under $100 I would take a look at the Simpson Berkley, or the Simpson Commadore. They are both really nice high quality badger brushes. The Simpson Best Badger knots are very nice. They have good backbone, density and softness. The Thater brushes in Silvertip bulb shaped knots are great as well. The Thater brushes in some of the smaller sizes can be purchased for a little over $100.
+azhawk516 Thanks so much, sir. That info helps a lot! I was looking into those Simpsons too. I go to Pasteur's in NYC but 'the help' doesn't really know too much. Your insight is helpful...big time! Thanks again.
Sorry it took so long to answer your comment. I missed it. A great badger brush for under $100 is the Simpson Commodore X3 best badger. It has really nice backbone, but is still pretty soft. The knot feels a lot like the Duke 3 best badger at about half the cost.
Dear Paul, I do quite like your cideo clips, they are in fact very detailed. If you just could put more light onto the front of your face, this would be great. In fact most of your clips are on the darker side... You could really 'upgrade' your clips substantially, as these are quite specific, no lala-dada. Thanks, Achim+
Beautiful brushes. Thanks for letting us see them. I prefer bulb also.
You bet. Thanks for watching.

Superb collection! Love the Chubby, got the Chubby2 in Best Badger, which is great but yours look amazing! Good stuff!

Subscribed just because you’re a Seahawks fan.
Hi Paul,
If you dont mind me asking, which Simpsons Chubby two are you referring to? the best badger or the Super Badger ? Thanks !
This Chubby 2 is what Simpson call it's Silvertip badger. It is a premium two band knot. This knot has great backbone like the Manchurian badger, but the tips are much softer. Simpson only releases brushes with this hair every now and then. It's a special one for sure.
Hi Paul, thanks for the fast reply.... no wonder, i only see a best and super badger.. Thanks !!
+Ferdinand LuDo I got this one from the Simpson website. The only release them every now and then. You have to keep your eye out on their site for the "special" brushes.
Paul, is the Chubby 2 better in best badger or super badger?

I need a silver tip brush with real good back bone. I wanted a Savile Row how are the backbone on those? Any other suggestions ?

Great Top 10. Disturbing that I own 6 from your Top 10
sounds like you prefer simpson 2 band silvertip to their manchurian, then?
Yes it is softer, but still has great backbone.

Achim Kohlhage thanks for the input. I'll see what I can do.
T
this brushes are too expensive...you can find similar quality brushes for much less
Fernando Abreu true. You can definitely find some great brushes at a lower price point.
Great Top 10. Disturbing that I own 6 from your Top 10
Great minds think alike.
