His playing was always in the service of the music. His balanced, perfectly in tune, and beautiful sound on the Telecaster always felt good on the ear and his time and melodic sense absolutely impeccable. One of the all-time greats.
I used to think that way too until I went into a guitar store and tried a few. This is, technically the first real electric guitar design... Everything up until the telecaster was really an acoustic guitar.
Ricard da Mata I can understand why you could say that about him "nothing special" but Ed Bickert's chord grips and voice leading are intensely beautiful and his single lines are subtle, lyrical and right to the point of the chord tones. I wish I could play that well. Maybe you feel that way cuz he's not trying to be "special"
It's not about the instrument of choice. It's about the choice of what the player is playing on the instrument. Bravo Ed Bickert. Preconceived notions, are just that. Preconceived expectations.
Bickert is my favorite guitarist, bar none... there's no contest! Thanks for posting this video; there just isn't enough of Ed's stuff out there on RUclips, so this is a real score!
+Rudi Vorster well.... I think of a gentlemen named Pat martino if Ihave to name the best....don't get me wrong GG is fine but martino is in another league he's a living legend
@@elwoodhsmith just my opinion- having ? 95% of every EB recoded he sounds significantly different on many of theses. Idk if it was on his ex, or the engineer. More to the point, I think- any tele of any year with any setup with mostly any action or strong gauge - would sound like - Ed unless he played through an old tweed like a champ. Imo- taste, chops , voicing, the rhythm section - and his both majestic and magical ... right hand.
He has played with both a single coil and an HB in the neck. Not sure why he prefers one to the other unless it's the old feedback issue. But then he would have switched sooner? Amusing that Joe Pass played a Jaguar for awhile. Maybe until he could save enough $$ for a big Gibson. Jaguar does seem to get a sweeter tone than a Strat or Tele.
It seems to me that the bassist is Mr Neil Swainson who had been the bassist for Sir George Shearing for more than 20 years. Is there anyone who can give me the correct answer?
im wondering if everyone that comes here is just amazed by the way he goes! im on drugs >anfetaminic tastes< my backround going through this stuff is pretty deep i've been studying, but i love to feel the drug states of mind just analizyng (the way i like) the continumm that ed creates!
A Telecaster strung with medium or heavy-gauge flat-wound guitar strings, such as Thomastik-Infeld brand, played through a warm-sounding amp with tone controls set properly - can sound great for jazz. Mr. Bickert is a wonderful player, isn't he?
@@johnnymac3211 - Yeah, they sound good, no doubt. I have a Tele with a humbucker in the neck position and it sounds very nice, but single coil P/U's sound nice for jazz, too, if you dial in the right tone on your amp.
sometimes it happen that we don't get a musician. In this case, it seems that you don't get him. But you can be sure that Bickert is one of the greatest guitarists ever especially considering the school of the pianistic approach to the instrument. I can't think of a more elegant musician than him on the guitar.

I love your phrase: "in the service of the music" it truly defines how EB played, I would add, he played like he had nothing to prove.
R.I.P Ed you were one of the great players of your generation
this is one of my favorite jazz guitar videos on RUclips.. incredibly subtle and sophisticated playing.. and on a telecaster yet!..
you should try for his studio recordings with don thompson for sure! what a legend.
A Telecaster with a humbucker at the neck position. Tone is like that of a Gibson jazz box minus all the color from the archtop itself.
I used to think that way too until I went into a guitar store and tried a few. This is, technically the first real electric guitar design... Everything up until the telecaster was really an acoustic guitar.
Superb. He will be missed. RIP Mr. Bickert.

R.I.P. Such a great genius, and so dedicated to the Art of Jazz

Coolest Jazz Guitarist Ever!!! what a genius.
RIP Ed Bickert
Beautiful track. Every beat and every note. Everything is sublime.
A legend. So tasteful. A person would have to a pretty poor musician not to appreciate his genius.
This was always my favorite video of Ed to come back to, rest in peace.
Luv Ed Bickert. One of my faves. I can’t get enough of this guy.
Thats how You play a guitar folks.... Thanks so much for posting!!!
And what amazing bass too. A match made in heaven.
There’s the best...and there’s Ed....sublime!
The impeccable Mr. Bickert.

I agree with you. I love his playing, also his group with Paul Desmond. A supreme jazz guitarist with a great taste.
That would be Dave Young playing bass.
he looks hilarious lol
Of course that's Dave Young! Ha! Good one Will.
@@reggietito3261 his playing is out of the earth!
What a GREAT guitarist!
Wow... Beautiful
RIP. Another master gone.
Terry Clark on drums and Dave Young on bass. Two exceptional musicians, as well. Both still very active today.
Third piece i hear him play, keeps getting better. Deep in a dream, Walk if off and now this.. love his taste and playing.
Awesome...very good...excellent
wonderful guitar, the Fender just proves it doesn't matter what guitar you play what matters is what you hear...
It proves you can play anything on a Telecaster.
Ya'll are forgetting that the Telecaster was invented to play western SWING. It was made to do this stuff.
Interesting !
Eric Fricke Mike Stern
The Telecaster is the do-it-all guitar.
Country, Rock, Blues, Jazz … no other guitar is equally at home in all of these genres.
The great guitarist !
Ed is the most influential jazz guitar player in the LAST FORTY YEARS ! Remember that !!! He is a genius (y)
He is brilliant. You might also want to catch Guthrie Govan - probably the best guitarist alive! He plays in a trio: The Aristocrats
+Rudi Vorster well.... I think of a gentlemen named Pat martino if Ihave to name the best....don't get me wrong GG is fine but martino is in another league he's a living legend
Thanks. I will definitely have a listen. Have you heard Ted Green?
In your dreams maybe…
Guthrie Govan is nothing.
Great!
I have practiced for years on my tone- and still cant get it-now I have moved onto trying to find which gum he used...So brilliant.
Well, Ed had ten things (to get that tone) that none of us will ever have.
Nice. The tune sometimes reminded me of Stomping at the Savoy.
maestros!
I know Torben was a great fan of Neil Swanson. Does anyone know if Torben Oxbul played with Ed Bickert?
A very light touch indeed. I imagine the action on that Tele must’ve been very low. Anyone have any inside info on this?
Ed’s Favorite String Gauge: .010 to .046 strings. That surely has something to do with his sound.

I would love to able to play guitar and chew gum like that. Insane guitarist
Yep, that's pretty badass.
Are you sure that's not Dave Young on bass? Looks like him ... just dayin'
Yes, that is Dave Young on bass.
That's Dave Young on the bass
Dave Young on bass not Neil Swainson!
That is Dave.

Joe Pass was cleaning up in Synanon during the Jaguar time
I have a Jag with Gibson 57 humbuckers. Very sweet but doesn't get the tones of my archtops.
I read that he changed to a humbucker in the neck position because he thought the two high strings sounded too thin with the single coil.
01:47 Ed's feeling it!
I thought chewing gum just got stuck in between his teeth 😂

Bien le bassiste aussi , Ed est de la famille "Barney K. non ?

He was so great he could play and chew gum at the same time
Who knew Lurch could play the guitar! And chew gum at the same time! Fantastic playing though.
I know you are joking, and that you know it's really Gregory Peck.
Ed Bickert a guy who can really play guitar and chew gum at the same time.
Victor Young wrote "Street of Dreams", not Harry Warren.
I thought Ritchie Blackmore wrote it...are you saying this isn't the Rainbow song?

The fact is that there is nothing special about this guitarist (he also uses a wrong instrument).
