  • Finally a little progress was made this week when David decided he had the skills figured out to drain and start to remove our poorly functioning and very old heating system.
We have installed a system of mini-splits to both heat and cool the house and although we debated keeping these in as a back up the very poor functioning (due we think to sludge in the radiators) and the lack of people to come help you take care of your boiler (in Jan it was going to be 5 months before anyone could come look at our system). Finally our goal is to get rid of natural gas to the house and eventually get solar panels. The boiler runs on natural gas.
This video is a lot of water! and sludge! :) pouring into buckets. David shows you how he released the steam valves on the upstairs radiator. I quickly empty buckets and then I show you both how David disconnected the radiators from the wall (I do not have the muscle!). Our next goal is to hire a couple of guys with real muscle to drag them out of the house.
Finally I show you some ideas for repurposing your radiator. Our plan is to save one and use it as a table of some sort when we build the apartment over the eventual garage. Those slides were find after doing a search for radiator repurposing. Links for the photos are here: preloved.co.uk.

Can't believe you guys took out these excellent source of radiant heat. I prefer these over any other form of heat for evenness, and how long they hold the heat. Scrap? Those are worth quite a bit if in working order. I just replaced one that was about $1100.

They were def. not in working order. I would have loved to keep them but believe me they were just the tip of our heating woes at the time. it took another 6 months to sort out decent heating. We tried to fix our radiators from the back end and front end. There was just no way to get them working again without breaking our backs. (by the way the guy at the end did slip his disk as a result of helping us get them out).

@@ATwistedPicot Understood. Yeah, to fix and replace is quite the endeavor. I had to replace a large radiator in my living room and it broke a 1000lb dolly trying to get it in, but for some reason my friend was able to get it in within 10 mins. Got lucky.

We are new to radiator care. I’ve been trying to learn how to flush the sludge. How did you do this? How did you get it to all drain out into buckets? All I’ve seen is removing the whole radiator and taking it out in the yard with a hose.

that is exactly the only way we could figure it out. It takes a pressure washer to get the sludge out. The radiator weight a crap ton! By the time we got them out of the house we were over trying to make them work. We have now decomissioned our radiators (they went to the junk man) and we are using a wood burning stove and mini-splits.

Was the issue that they didn't work? I assume that means no heat would radiate out from it.

That was exactly the problem. In order to even make them work we had to disconnect, carry them out of the house and then pressure wash all of the poo colored sludge out. by the time we carried out the radiators we HATED them!! We called the scrap guy and he took them away. It is also our goal to convert to all electricity and solar power-the boiler system is natural gas.

What are you putting in to replace it?

Old ground Radiators vs microwave and too many broadcast wiring. Don't go cold for the winter. Beware of lead paint in water don't get sick

too late they are gone. The system was oh so messed up. We could not fix them and by the time we had them outside for flushing there were human injuries. Additionally the boiler was natural gas. Oh so many reasons we decommisioned this particular item.
