  • In this video I show how to upgrade the taillights and 3rd brake light along with license plate lights to LED on the Ford Excursion. I also show how to wire in the 3rd brake light to the reverse lights. All lights were purchased from Amazon and links are posted below.

I have an 04 excursion (colorado also!) ive been slowly changing all my lights over on as well, had the same issue with brake and reverse light clips breaking. So far haven't had issues with them working their way lose. However, i do like the LED tail lights you used, may just go that route. No resistors needed or hyperflash issues from what I saw?
Also when you go to replace interior bulbs, alot of the tabs that make contact on the bulbs are going to want to break on you as well so be cautious with those.

I love the way these tail lights look, but I dont like how minimal of a difference it is between running light and brake/turn signal. I've almost rear ended someone with these because I couldn't even tell they applied their brakes.

I’ve heard about people having this issue. That’s why I put the flashing 3rd brake light on for an extra warning. I just wish there was more options for led taillights on the excursion.

Great job! Thanks for posting. I am in the process of doing the same 3rd Brake/BU Light. So I have to ask your opinion. Does the BU light add that much light, or as you say, it is more for a warning that you are backing up? My thought was to wire it to the positive leg of the rear interior dome/cargo light. It would be way easier (& faster), and I can control it with the cargo light switch. My plan is to illuminate the hitch when connecting a trailer. Also, when I run wire through sheet metal, I either add a grommet so it doesn't wear through the insulation and or run wires through a piece of drip line (irrigation spaghetti tube) just for added protection. p.s. Love the garage wall art. We'd be friends on many levels. Carry on, Brother!

It does add quite a bit more light while backing up. the reason I didn't wire it into the dome light was because sometimes my interior lights will stay on due to the back hatch switch sticking I'm sure you have encountered this before most Excursion owners have. Im afraid if this switch sticks the interior don't shut off so that 3rd brake light would also stay on while driving possibly blinding drivers behind me. Yeah I got quite the collection of wall art going on lol.

The only thing I can think of to fix that spacing on that third brake light because it drives me nuts is some sort of rubber insert gasket. Where did you buy the wire from for the reverse light on the third brake light?

Luckily it doesn’t look to bad still bugs me. I just couldn’t stand the old light I was replacing bulbs all the time. I just bought a roll of wire from Walmart in the automotive section it was only like $7.99 for the roll of 16 gauge.
