      Thats different for everyone. for playability more expensive guitars have lower frets than say a pacifica. thats it. The neck is a matter of personal preference so they cant really pin that on a cheap/expensive guitar although I am sure they have data on what kind of neck works best for most people and put that neck on the more expensive guitars and the type of neck that does not work so well for the average user on the cheap ones.
      Then you have the pickups. Doing one that sounds like on jimmy hendrix guitar (well a pre cbs strat) is no expense at all, but the cheap ones on the squier are going to sound distinctively different, the ones on the fender pretty close, while the ones that are a carbon copy of the ones used in the 60s are reserved for the most expensive ones.
      Its all marketing, figuring out what people want then giving them at a low pricepoint something that is not what they want but good enough to make them spend 300 bucks while reserving what people DO want for the very expensive guitars. Of course it is not just about the sound but the original look and feel when talking about vintage or a certain look and feel people shoot for in something contemporary.

    In 1974 I was in a rock band (during High School) and I bought a Les Paul Custom, black/gold hardware used for around $400. I got it on payments and paid on it as our band were doing shows. Took me a year to pay it off. I think it was a 1972 LP.....with mostly just the belt buckle scratches on the back. I had it for about 7 years before I sold it. And I've learned you should never sell a guitar as you'll just want it back someday.

      Considering Rory Gallagher’s guitar happened to look like that through playing and touring and Fender did a kind of crap job with this signature, it’s kind of a shame. 5 way selector instead of a 3 way would of fixed some of that. For a Rory fan, it’s iconic and I can see the appeal in owning one. Not for that price though, if you’re not a fan then there’s no point.

      The Affinity Strats from Squier have better necks. Even so though you can always buy a $200.00 official Fender replacement neck which fits the Squiers and another $50.00 for official Fender machine heads and still come in under the cost of an entry level Fender Strat. I paid $200.00 for an Affinity model to learn on and have nickel and dimed upgrades with little bits of tax refund and the occasional spare cash and put maybe another $300.00 into it over like 18 months and have a completely custom instrument for about $500.00 all told. I always assumed I would replace the pickups but the stock ones actually sound really good and a bit junkie the way Strat pickups should. I just bought a second one because I want to rout it out for a custom and completely non-standard pickup configuration.

    I've been playing since 1978. I don't really like the "tribute" guitars at all. Why? Because I don't want to be playing someone else's guitar. I would rather take a basic American Standard or HSS Strat and make it my own. I also feel that the "damage" is all just a bit pretentious. So, a Les Paul Custom, an American Standard Start, and a regular HSS Strat would be my weapons of choice.

I've been playing since 1984 and I have owned several Fender basses. Right now, my go-to bass is a Squire vintage modified jazz bass, excellent sound, and playability. I use it on gigs all the time. Thanks for your comparison video :-) With my laptop, headphones and 70-year-old musician-ears, I couldn't hear the difference in your two strats as you played. I bought a beautiful white HSS "hard tail" Squier Bullet and couldn't be more pleased. The frets on mine do NOT catch my fingers; they seem fine. The (satin finish) neck must be one of the slimmest necks among the Squier Strat models. I like the higher output hum-bucker bridge pickup as it helps to stand out in the band for solos and lead parts. I also like that the Squier Bullet is light weight! The hard tail (no whammy bar) means that it's less likely to go out of tune. :-) A couple of MINOR points...I did end up going to the next less-slim gauge strings (ie. #10 on top) looking for a slightly less "plink" sound on the really high notes. I also will be putting on some fret marker stickers for brighter fret markings, as I find the dots not quite bright enough for me on a poorly lit stage. BTW, I loved your jam as well! :D

    I'm a big fan of the Squier guitars. I own three Squier Strats. All partscasters and project guitars by now. The first two, a '98 and '97 China Affinity coast $80 and $65 respectively. I bought them used about five years ago. They were good instruments right away. Just needed strings and a set-up. Over time I have upgraded tuners and pickups/electronics. None of them is as good as an American Strat. But I have spent less than half the price of one American Strat on the three of them. And I have learned a lot about guitars in the process. They all sound and play differently. And they are each outfitted differently for pickups. One has three hot rails, one has two humbuckers, and one has an Alnico 4 P-90, a hot Alnico 5 single coil and 20k/Alnico 8 humbucker bridge pup, with an on/off switch for the humbucker. My favorite mod. They all sound and play great. But the intonation and tremolo/tuning stability will never equal an expensive guitar. Alas... The new Vintage Vibe Squiers are highly rated. A great value. I don't own one, but am open to it.

    This video is one of the best videos I saw about guitars. Very funny with a lot of sense. I am 62 and have a lot of time so I decided to buy the cheapest I could buy. I bought a bullet strat. Then I started to investigate what I actually bought and was pleasant surprised. This video tops my decicion. I thought what could I get for 138 CHF and wasn’t expecting much. I was tended to by a more expensive one and I am so happy I did not. But as a beginner? But I spent 600 CHF on a Headrush later, because I found out much about amps. If you have no ideas one looses much money but these two buys were some of my better ones. I am so happy now, that could not be topped by the most expensive guitar. Merry Christmas!

Since then it's travelled over 3000 mile to Canada, where it stayed in it's box, came back to England 3 years later where it sat in the loft. It was taken down early this year when I was clearing the loft, amazingly the thing was still in tune! So started learning and playing again, at 64 I decided I needed a hobby as I approach retirement. BTW the shop looks amazing, I feel a trip coming on in the new year and perhaps a new guitar :)

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If someone wants to spend a ton of cash on a relic'd (is that even a word?) guitar, it's their money and more power to them. IMHO, relicing is something you *earn*. It's reflective of the labor of love that has gone into your guitar journey. I remember my first Epiphone LP, and how I excited I was when the finish started coming off the neck and the frets started to show wear (until I found out how expensive it is to get frets re-worked!).

    • @mikes062
      @mikes062 7 лет назад

      Bruno Ramos it's probably going to be something vintage styled from MIM and modern from MIA, so I'd think it'd be different but more to do with preferences for feel and pickup output.

    • @cenovita
      @cenovita 7 лет назад

      I don't now if they sound that different, but the feel must be, because MIM are done using the Metric System mostly, so the string spacing is narrower, like about 1 mm, USA spacing is 11,3 mm (2 7/32") vs 10,5 mm (2 1/16"). Is a pretty tiny difference, but I noticed it feels like the strings are not that close to the fret ends, sort of say. But Maybe is because I'm used to the squiers and MIM fenders, and rarely I play a USA. BTW, Writing this confirmed my opinion that Metric system makes more sense, lol.

      Go figure, I used to buy jeans as a kid, and distress them myself.
      My mother was bitching about it, but at least I didn't pay 3 times the price for it.
      EDIT: Jeans did cost the equivalent of todays 30 dollars or less.
      30 dollars, not 3000, spot the difference.

      Yes, and that obvious reason is that a market exists where people are willing to pay for it.

    I think we've got a law of diminishing returns going on here. That Squier Bullet actually sounds really good, even next to the crazy expensive Strat! A damn sight better than my first electric guitar, which is a knock-off Strat from Argos, made by a company called Elevation. Took a fair amount of modification to get mine playing and sounding anywhere decent at all. Don't think it had ever had a setup until then.

      No...I mean the "Tremolo arm." Although we all know the effect produced by using the bar is actually, as you correctly say, "vibrato," Fender incorrectly coined the term in 1954 and even marketed the Strat with a "Synchronised Tremolo." US patent - US 2741146 A filed on Aug 1954.

    A few years ago studies were done in which world class violinists played stradivarius violins and quality modern violins without knowing which ones they were playing. The modern violins won! In psychology there is a phenomenon called the "confirmation effect" which shows that our expectations can alter our perceptions of a stimuli. I maintain that most people cannot really tell the difference between fairly comparable instruments. It all has to do with the individuals touch, mastery of tone, and feeling. I recently bought an Ibanez AG 95 and will put it up against any jazz box selling for three times the price. (I don't work for Ibanez!)

    The best players I have sat in with rarely have an off the shelf axe. Even the higher end strats are modified to their liking. So, there is that element of learning to set up your own rig as you are learning to play. I say the Bullet fits into that attribute well. Not only learning to play on a decent, affordable axe, but also being able to learn how to set up and such without destroying a custom shop unit is important. One could get a Bullet and change the tuners, lots, nut, pickups, and such; tend to fret edges. They would learn a lot while ending up with a very nice axe. I have several. One of which is a Amercan Deluxe that I got new, but my squire that I customized and experimented with over the decades still feels great, and, most importantly, shares the same stories and history of the journey we have taken together. When I pull out my Deluxe, I hold the reward of my hard work and financial success. BUT, when I grab my Squire, I am with an old friend who has shared the same ups and downs along the path that has twisted and turned to where I am today.

    I've been roughing it with my wife's childhood Squire for the last few years, I think it cost around £120 when new. I say roughing it, but it's been a great guitar which I've even managed to lower the action on without fret buzz. I've just ordered a Fender Strat HSS Player in metalic sage green, so I'm very much looking forward to comparing the two.

    Thing is, buy a cheap squier and add less than £100 in upgrades and it's pretty close. That's what I did to my first ever guitar. Bone nut, hand wound pickups, CTS pots, orange drop and Kluson tuners. Sand and oil the neck, face the frets. I stripped it and repainted it in nitrocellulose. Set it up and you're golden.

      Carl samuel Romano that’s just it, it’s not aged beautiful expensive wood. There’s no history or story behind a guitar that’s not the original. It’s the same wood that’s put on many less expensive guitars, but because someone relics it, it commands a ridiculous price

    One thing is certain the fender squier played by someone that can play decently definitely sounds really good. That being said, the price of producing something USA or China has to come out in the price. The fact that customer shop guitars have a really guitar expert handling the guitar and crafting it also has to come out in the price. Whatever guitar that just does not come out of an assembly line but actually has people handling the material needs to add to cost.

    How cool would it be to have a replica of Rory's strat.....PLUS it sounded mean like Rory's. The Bullet was pretty amazing in its own right. It was great to see a great guitar player shredding away so well on both instruments in order to get a true idea of what they both can do. It blew me away how I almost liked some of the stuff on the Bullet better than the Rory. Very informative guitar science! Cheers
