I'm right here with ya brother! I had just started learning when I first started watching Chappers And The Captain. It takes me back man. The "Gig Rig For £500" is a personal favourite.
+ThyerHazard I call bullshit. I was in aus in December and they had a les Paul studio for 2000. Aus dollar sucks but it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.
Can't you do like a "Sound like...For under 1000£" challenge? Say that you and Captain have a budget of 1000£ each to put a rig together with the best and most authentic (say) EVH or AC/DC sound. That would be awesome! I know my english is too bad but I'm from Sweden so...xD
How about seeing whether its the guitar or amp that's vital? One has a small budget for a guitar (like less than 2 or 3 hundred) and like a grand for the amp, and then the other does vise versa. Obviously need to aim for a similar sound to compare, and things like volume shouldnt matter :)
Just spoken to Rob - he's in the studio today, but he asked me to say cheers to everyone who's watched so far & that he'll get around to checking out all the posts just as soon as he can!
You have a lovely tone with the strat Captain! You said it has SD stacked single coils but what type is it exactly? I tried to find them but I get multiple suggestions.
I'd love to see another one of these but with Captain making a shred guitar and Rob making a blues one... then when they play them they have to switch off and play each others.
@Unfiltered Truth Shredding is about playing fast - not necessarily unmusical, that's your value judgment. Is Rob "musical in his approach"? I do hope so... although that is a very strange way of putting it. A strange musician indeed who wouldn't consider him/herself "musical in his/her approach". Hearing Rob noodle is clearly not the same as hearing his recordings or live concert. But he clearly does a lot of shred passages in these videos. It might be a kind of shred that is more to your liking, than, say, Yngwie or Satch or Batio or whoever, but it's clearly shredding.
@@somethingbl shredding usually doesn't follow common blues scales. If you play blues song and you start to shred while not using a blues scale, then you're not playing the blues but rather some sort of crossover genre. Nothing wrong with that. But Rob's quick shred runs aren't blues.
@@JohannesWiberg You're just trying to put rules on everything, and music doesn't work that way. Bonamassa shreds all the time with blues scales. Rob shreds with other scales/modes over blues chords. Who cares, let people play their style.
@@somethingbl What are you talking about? I'm completely fine with anyone playing anything. You can play metal or classical or whatever. But if you play metal and you say that you play classical, you won't make any sense. That was the point of my original comment. I didn't make any rules, but words do mean something. "Music doesn't work that way" is a nice sentiment but if scrutinized it doesn't really hold water - of course it has rules. Now, since it's aestetics, rules can often be broken leading to something new and great, but that doesn't mean that anything goes and words don't mean anything. Be open minded, sure, but not too much, or your brain will fall out. I wasn't trying to say that what Rob was playing was bad or wrong (I like his playing fine and it's way better than anything I can play) just that it was incongruous with his statement.
I TOO APPRECIATE OTHER HUMANS SENSES OF HUMOUR. HAHAHAHAHA WHAT A INTERESTING BENDING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. That Tele that Rob has at the end of the video is the 50s Baja Telecaster. It's an MIM Tele. Designed by one of Fenders Master builders. Almost a mashup of a list of dream specs that people have requested with the wonderful Telecaster. Includes 3 brass barrels, Soft V 50s maple neck, and not to mention a Twisted Tele Custom Shop Neck Pickup and a Broadcaster Custom Shop Bridge pickup. It was my first Tele. Blame Waylon Jennings for my love of the Almighty Tele. Also includes an S1 switch for out of phase sounds and a 4th position which acts as a higher output humbucker mode. Point being anyone looking for an absolute dream of a guitar for under 800 bucks should truly give that one a go.
The Baja tele is KING on TGP, I've never heard ANYONE have a bad thing to say about it; it's pretty much THE consensus BEST value guitar on most gear forums. I'd get one myself, but I hate hate HATE poly finishes on Fender guitars.
Admittedly I do wish that it had the satin finished neck that the newer Standards have, and I would've liked to see the truss rod adjustment screw at the headstock rather than in the neck cavity, however those are the only downsides I can think of. I'm still strictly a novice but when you have a guitar that you love to look at and hold and it sounds great, it just inspires you to pick it up and practice that much more.
Decided to rewatch this video after nearly a decade of owning higher end guitars and also owning lower end guitars and modding them and completely agree with the sentiment that it is difficult to get a guitar that doesn’t feel nice to feel nice. However, if you had a more open budget let’s say under £1000 and an extra few hundred for mods you can build a dream guitar if you have the right know how.
I've probably watched this video 15 times over the years. Just a fantastic video to come back to. Hopefully we'll get more chappers and the captain shenanigans in 2021

This video is about 10 years old. I have to admit I’ve watched this very video thousands of times and still get the thrill watching it. Setting a budget and using it to transform a guitar into the true axe you want it to be. I still have my very first fender squier telecaster I got for Christmas when I was 17. 15 years later with many mods done to it and it’s still my favourite guitar which I will never let go of.
eNikita BB King convinced Billy Gibbons to get rid of his heavy strings and choose light ones. BB asked him "why he was doing all that extra work." It's in an interview on youtube. Jimmy Page also favored 'banjo strings.'
Binge-watched many many of your brilliant videos today mates. Including some north of 40 minutes. This channel and your videos are a dream come true for those us who are unable to go to a guitar super store as much as we would love to hibernate there and try out endless amount of axes and equipment. MAJOR Rob, Capt. Lee & Morrae (forgive me if I've slayed your name) FAN SINCE 07/26/17.
That was awesome. I'd take either one of these guitars. The people at Guitar Center always make fun and talk behind my back when I ask for a custom job on a Squire or something of a similar price range. I always have them sample it when the job is done too, so they can eat their own smugness.
I've turned a few cheap strat copies into guitars that easily rival USA made strats for several hundred dollars less. Some new pups, pots and fret level/ dress makes a huge difference. Of course, the tools, time and skill involved all add up. I have fun fixing, modding and flipping guitars so it's worth it to me. So many prima donna, purist guitarists limit their tone and guitar choices to such a limited pallet and name on a headstock.
Can't say that I disagree. I've seen Partscasters & Custom-handmade guitars by local luthiers, with a much better construction & QC, than wahtever the mainstream companies, put onto the shelves. It really shows how much the guitar industry us starting to fall into decline, due to oversaturation musical instruments, on the market.
Dawg , they both are awesome, each unique and individual character, but just awesome! Both evolved from great taste and equals super cool guitars! Well Done!
I would take a crusty old modded guitar over a shiny new expensive one any day. My prized possession is a hot pink Squire Strat w/ a generic replacement neck, some Seymour Duncan pickups (I can't remember which ones...they're single-coil-sized humbuckers) + whatever original humbucker was in it. Floyd Rose floating bridge+locking nut. Once I got it set up properly, it sounds, looks and plays like no other new guitar I've ever tried.
This is great. Really interesting. As a person who can't afford or justify spending thousands on custom shop guitars, but still wants a decent axe as I gig and record regularly, this video gives some great advice. A few years ago I was in Andertons and bought a second hand Vintage V100 (LP copy) for £79. After new pickups, wiring set and a pro setup at a cost of £200, I now have a very playable and great sounding LP for less than a basic epiphone model. Also, to save money, I installed the pickups (Seymour Duncan Phat Cat and Classic 59) and wiring set myself which meant I learned quite a bit about the workings of my guitar in the process, meaning I felt confident in doing small repairs in the future, again saving money. The technician who did the setup for me even remarked on what a bargain the guitar was. I'm so glad you guys are championing this type of thing for people like me and not just trying to sell everyone a guitar they can't really afford (like a lot of other retailers) . Top stuff.
Rob/Lee - I've been binge watching your videos over the last few weeks (love your channel - tons of useful info). I love this video. Rob, I love the sound of your LTD! Lee, same on your strat - didn't realize how much better it sounded until you pulled out the standard one. Again, great video! Thanks for a great channel!
Yamaha EG012. £147 from lidls WITH AN AMP! And it's alright. Needs, (not desperately) better tuning heads, tone pot, whammy and five way selector. The pickups, especially the humbucker, are good. The body is a bloody heavy lump of Alder. The neck just needs setting up and frets sanding as there is one slight buzz on the D string at 12th fret.
The other day, I played a Chapman guitar before i realised wtf it was, dude at the shop suggested it for metal, i read the headstock eventually and thought"nah, it has to be another Chapman", got home, looked into it and holy moly i cant believe one has made it to Perth Australia. Awesome. Rock on.
New challenge for you guys (I know, I keep coming up with these lol): This one at least actually has a point to it. I got to wondering: just how important is pickup selection to the sound of a guitar? So, my challenge for you is to get two guitars, one high-end, and the other just the crappiest guitar you can find. Something that makes that First Act Strat look like the Fender Custom Model. Then, do a short demo for both guitars from their factory-direct vanilla layout. Then, swap the electronics, or maybe even just the pickups. The question being: will the crappy guitar sound decent with the good pickups? Or just remain sounding crappy? Will the good guitar still sound alright with the cheap pickups, or will they ruin it? Please do this. I'm really interested in hearing the results.
Even with the same electronics, a 22 fret guitar will sound different than a 24 fret guitar. Pickups on an angle will sound different than straight ones. I believe that speakers beat pickups when it comes to tone. Also tube models are more important than pickups. Gain and playing in a group can hide the sound of a pickup. Let's say you love the sound of a '59 Les Paul, but if you run it through a 4" toy amp speaker, it's going to sound horrible. You will never save it with a pickup selection. You will need a new speaker. If you think the pickup is too bright run it with a EL34 amp and or 10" speakers. If you think the pickup is too dark, run it through a VOX AC 30 or a 6L6 amp with 12" speakers. Speakers should be rated 93Db or more.
I'm not sure what fret count or pickup angle has to do with my post... Also, I recognize that pickup selection isn't the only thing that affects sound. The question is HOW MUCH it affects the sound.
Great playing, Lee!!! Rob should hold down the groove for you more often And Rob, yes, we all realize that you are a god, it's your humor and your shared quest for fun that makes you approachable love you both - keep it coming
Now days personally I think it's really good to buy a reasonable priced guitar and mod it to your own specs....for alot of players the guitar is a very personal instrument....even learning how to strip a guitars finish and paint it ...it makes it even more personal...it's very satisfying too...
First, your name has to be David gilmour, second, you have to chop his hands off and hand swap, and third, you need to steal his brain. Then, you will be on your road to sounding nothing like gilmour.
I figure it's coming, and it's something every musician should know before moving from "home playing" to "live in a band playing" +1000 for making a "home tone v pro tone vid" Rob + Lee
I have watched this episode SO many times and I love it ! As a lefty player you have to mod. No company makes what I want exactly, but close. Fortunately there’s some great guitars out there for not a hell of a lot of money. Look great, play great just 3 hundred more and booya !
What do you mean by mod? As in just flip everything? I'm a lefty and I'm just starting. I have a left handed squire strat but I know finding lefties is difficult
i think he got him to complete the rock star look when he was doing his 'Dorje'(?) band touring and stuff. i'm mostly down with dreads and Rob for the most part pulled off the look well. but i think he knew when it was time to move on. another kid on the way, moving, the band not touring much if at all, all things come to an end.
As a lefty I'm looking more and more into modding guitars, because SO MANY guitars you just can't get whatsoever. What I ended up doing recently was ordering a custom job non-existent-from-fender HH telecaster from China purely because they're stupidly cheap and frankly all the cheap fenders are made over there anyway. Now I'll be ripping out ALL the electrics and adding similar stuff to what these guys added, but I'm curious to see how good I can get it to sound. I have other Chinese-made guitars and after modifying them they sound and play great.
Lefty here too lol, i took a used MIM strat and swapped the saddles for graphtech ones and threw a Duncan JB in it, now i love it. It's better than a more expensive guitar in my opinion, and its customized to my preferences.
Alright this is oficially my favorite guitar channel amazing videos i coiuld literally sit here and watch you guys all day long and seriously you havr brought me back into guitar I had to get rid of my jackson flametop and 50w tube peavey amp a little while ago because of some money issues but I still play at stores im def going out and getting me another guitar asap you guys broiught me back into the music world I guess subconsciously I have been scared to get another one because I didnt want to havr to get rid of it again but now im like I really dont care I need one and im not going to worry about what could happen i miss playing everyday im def getting one and you guys are a big reason for that I live the videos and really appreciate them keep them coming

In this video Rob looks like a guy who owns many decorative Samurai swords
"In the real world where you're never going to have a situation where someone says you only have so much and that's it...". It's called a wife. ;)
Dawg , they both are awesome, each unique and individual character, but just awesome! Both evolved from great taste and equals super cool guitars! Well Done!
This is honestly one of the best videos on youtube, we need more...
i love the way he says "aw mate" at 8:45
I like this kind of stuff. It would be cool having a regular show that is like Top Gear with guitars.
Once I got it set up properly, it sounds, looks and plays like no other new guitar I've ever tried.
same, never had a new guitar in my life
+Superglue up in here o shit waddup
I miss the Challenge vids with Captain and Chappers. This is what started me on this chanel, got me listening to Dorje etc.
Top stuff.
Gosh Capt. you really are a good guitarist. Really.
i look this video 20times and i love it!please do another one
I agree, they should customise more guitars
yes you are right
I love the sound of the ltd , i think 202!
+thomas mozelt Ive got an LTD in the eclipse shape, I can't wait to put some EMG pickups on it
a eclipse? I tell you ,take the hetset!its for eclipse perfekt!!!sorry for my bad english!lol
this is like top gear
it's the top gear of the guitar world
Top Gear would be a nice name for a music show, displaying the best gear.
They Should Call it Top Guitar or Guitar Gear
erm... I said this on their fb page months ago? ???
Julian Davies Ok?
Ive been watching for years. And this is still one of my favorite videos.
Captains Strat!
13:01 what would you call the quarter pounder pickup in France? ;)
The Seymour Duncan Roy Al W. Jeez Signature :-)
The Seymour Duncan 113g
***** you need to see pulp fiction my friend
Royale with cheese
I've seen it, just many many moons ago
The other day, I played a Chapman guitar before i realised wtf it was, dude at the shop suggested it for metal, i read the headstock eventually and thought"nah, it has to be another Chapman", got home, looked into it and holy moly i cant believe one has made it to Perth Australia. Awesome. Rock on.
This is the one that got me hooked on Andertons TV
Rob "Wow" Chapman and Lee "Sort of" Anderton :DD:
I wish I could like this a thousand times
Golden era
New challenge for you guys (I know, I keep coming up with these lol):
This one at least actually has a point to it.
It's such a blast to watch guitarists play when they're inspired by their instruments. Give them the right wood and they're off ....
fell in love with that turquoise guitar in the background after you guys picked your instruments up after modifications.
Never heard of a scalloped neck before. Looks awesome, but I think I also would miss touching me wood.
Guanjyn giggity
30:11 can you teach the diminished to minor lick? it sounded immense
Drummer here, I hit things with sticks. But I love your videos.
Great playing, Lee!!! Rob should hold down the groove for you more often
And Rob, yes, we all realize that you are a god, it's your humor and your shared quest for fun that makes you approachable
love you both - keep it coming
Now days personally I think it's really good to buy a reasonable priced guitar and mod it to your own specs....for alot of players the guitar is a very personal instrument....even learning how to strip a guitars finish and paint it ...it makes it even more personal...it's very satisfying too...
"You have a woman's strings, my lord."
Was that a Blackadder reference?
we need more of these...
Rob at about 3:40 YOU ROCK IT!! It makes me want to go to Anderton's, to bad I live in Texas!
Keith Baldwin *too bad
I love the way Rob never finishes his sentences with words. Eg for me I like the way you can do...starts stredding.
I could watch this in a repeating loop...really well done...love the humor as usual
Need a remake for 2022 now
How to sound like Gilmour vid? :)
YES
How to sound like Blackmore vid?
Throw some Seymour Duncan SSL-5's in a strat - Done!
YES!!!! I like the way you think sir! :D
First, your name has to be David gilmour, second, you have to chop his hands off and hand swap, and third, you need to steal his brain. Then, you will be on your road to sounding nothing like gilmour.
we nned the home tone v's pro tone video please :-)
***** +2
Ryan Martin +3
I figure it's coming, and it's something every musician should know before moving from "home playing" to "live in a band playing" +1000 for making a "home tone v pro tone vid" Rob + Lee
this show is the Top Gear of the guitar world. Love all of it.
Whose watching in 2018?! Love this vid!
I'm watching in 2019! Mainly cause I just love watching these guys jam together...
after pricing BAREKNUCKLE pickups...I dont see how you stayed in budget at all...putting one in the TELE....just sayin'
I'm in the UK... Bare Knuckle are made here
+Rob Chapman can you ship me a pare to my house with a note saying it is from a friend of Cory
+Cory Leventhal Considering that would be very illegal, my guess would be *no.*
+terrypussypower How would that be illegal? O_o
***** If the intent is to avoid import duty then it's very illegal.
I would have liked to hear the cheap guitars pre mod
Rob: "It isn't something you can straightaway do..."
Lee: Straightaway does it
Love watching your camaraderie and your informed opinions. keep it up. A true fan.
Geezus, it’s quite an eye shock seeing Rob with this hair after seeing so many videos of him with normal hair 😳
That’s funny. Short hair Rob has always looked weird to me because I saw him with the dreads for so long
i think he got him to complete the rock star look when he was doing his 'Dorje'(?) band touring and stuff. i'm mostly down with dreads and Rob for the most part pulled off the look well. but i think he knew when it was time to move on. another kid on the way, moving, the band not touring much if at all, all things come to an end.
I have other Chinese-made guitars and after modifying them they sound and play great.
im lefty too...its a nightmare finding guitars for us lol
yea i agree I'm left handed its a real stuggle
I should point out that guitar I got was a total abortion lol, definitely not worth it.
Almost turned it into something playable now though haha.
oh rip
Lefty here too lol, i took a used MIM strat and swapped the saddles for graphtech ones and threw a Duncan JB in it, now i love it. It's better than a more expensive guitar in my opinion, and its customized to my preferences.
Too this day I still want to know what brand Lee whispers to Rob
this is one of my favorite videos in your series. I really enjoyed this one. well done !
When are they getting married?
Alan Scott are they gay?
No, they're both married to women. I can't believe you took that seriously.
EJ Fields they're English, what's the difference? :p
Andrew Teller what you saying about English people
Dude, why would you "out" them in a RUclips comment section??? Not cool man, not cool
So what are the actual pickup's that Lee put in his strat? They sound awesome.
Coleman Jones Seymour Duncan STK-4, I think.
Rob never does enough clean tone soloing. he uses too much distortion IMO
Fascinating. Especially loved the "try out" improvisation with the solo swapping from 34' onwards.
Thanks for the inspiration Rob Chapman! I bought the LTD TE-254 and added Seymour Duncan pickups off the back of this video. It rocks! My fave guitar because the tones. Cheers Gareth (from Aussie land)
