    You're brave. I wish I'd found your channel ages ago! I've just quit a 10 year acute hospital nursing career having found an office-based assessor role outside of the NHS. It's terrifying as practically everyone I know is a nurse, and there's often such a pressure to try to 'keep up' with their skills/knowledge/development that it can overwhelm. My lifestyle was a mess with illness, exhaustion and burn out. I'm not saying quitting was my only salvation but I already feel better. Acute nursing IS exhausting and not everyone can balance their lifestyle enough to make that work for them. It takes more inner strength to be aware of this and act in it than your peers may realise. I hope things work out well for you, and well done for having the foresight to take action. 😊

    I am glad you've posted this, I really struggled with nights when I was training after 1 year of working I quit nursing. It made me ill and riddled with anxiety.

    I can relate to it so much. I am a step-down trauma nurse and I hate bedside nursing. The reasons? How about these:
    - Lousy, out of touch corporate management, that worries only about their bonuses and their asses cover-up.
    - Co-worker drama, politics, backstabbing, bickering, reporting each other, etc.
    - HCAPS ( the entirely stupid way to gauge performance).
    - Patient satisfaction surveys (Hey, a hospital is a hotel after all, ain't it?)
    - Purposeful hourly rounding (WTF, who has invented that?).
    - Call lights (I did not get my drink, ice, napkin, other inconsequential shit in no time!).
    - RN stands for "Refreshments & Narcotics" and that's exactly what it is.
    - Patients that curse, disrespect, threaten, walk out AMA, demand pain killers, and the list goes on.
    - Patient's families (see above) demanding, threatening.
    - Added and greatly multiplied nurse's responsibility about everything, patient care, charting, supplies, ass wiping...
    - Census swings, Patient ratios, On-call, tardy points, early clock-in, late clock-out penalties.
    - The entire healthcare delivery system is flawed inside and out.
    Over 50% of nurses I spoke with want to quit nursing now and I am one of them. Not going back to hospital work for sure.

      RUmedic I relate to everything you said, I have to , at the very least, get away from bedside nursing. it's horrible, here in America, average Joe usually can't afford to go to the hospital, so your mostly left with Medicaid n Medicare patients which, in my opinion, contributes to the disproportionate number of complete scumbag patients, it's the truth, in fact, it's literally the same fucking patients over n over. most of which are unemployed or drug addicted, or completely insane...most patients would actually make better jail inmates. it's the state of healthcare....it's stupid....everything you said is dead on

    • @The-Travel-Man
      @The-Travel-Man 7 лет назад +1

      Juan Valdez, thank you for mentioning the drug addicts - I entirely forgot! So it seems as though these are the vast majority of my clients having done some stupid shit over and over again. Anecdotally, some of my least bothersome patients are forensic ones, convicts, who arrive shackled to the bed :))) These know not to piss off a nurse or else they go back to jail much quicker than they need to.
      I am absolutely determined to get away from bedside nursing. The healthcare in the U.S. is hell on earth. Peace to you!

      RUmedic so true! I was lucky enough to be old enough to retire. Something has happened to management in the last 5 years. Toxic working conditions, understaffing, patient surveys, management throwing nurses under the bus, patient families, open visiting hours, overbooking OR schedules in relation to number of receiving beds, no collegiality among nurses, backstabbing, lack of breaks. I hate what it's become. If I was younger, I would go back to school to be an X-ray tech. I detested being a middleman between a rock and hard place, being blamed for everything. I would go into a tech field like X-ray tech, MRI, CAT Scan. I would rather have worked with machines and computers.

      Thank you, RUmedic for this very accurate summary of the nursing 'profession'. It is exactly the same here in the UK and I can't see things improving anytime soon. I handed in my notice after 10 years in the profession after being off work with stress for two weeks and receiving ZERO support on my return to work. I am serving my notice period on sick and have planned to start my new 'non-nursing' role in one month. I have lost money as we don't even get sick pay anymore. My only regret is that I let it get to this stage and didn't get out of the profession sooner. I see that this post is over a year old and I wish you the best in your future career.

    Hey, I'm sad to hear that you've been feeling so bad. I've just qualified as a Children's Nurse and started full time work last month. I feel the complete opposite to you, I commuted a really long way while I was training and was so incredibly tired by the time I finished as a student. Now my job is only a 15 minute drive away and I'm still getting over the novelty of not having to get up at 4:30! I hope your new job continues to improve your health :)

    Hi,
    Wish you the best of luck in your new job Xx
    I'm studying children's nursing currently finishing my 2nd year, I feel full time work on the wards is not for me. I just wanted to ask do we have to work full time once qualified or is it after a certain period of time we can move onto bank work or part time work. Does part time work still enable you to stay on the register, as I know you're expected to work a minimum number of hours to stay on after you are qualified.

    • @LifeofaStudentNurse
      @LifeofaStudentNurse  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, you don't have to work full time when you finish or on a ward. However, it is very difficult to do bank or agency newly qualified as they expect you to have experience. You can apply for a part time nursing job for when you qualify though. You only have to do 450 hours over 3 years to stay on the register which isn't very much at all.

    Plus I feel like I'm being pressured to take extra shifts despite the fact it's not the hours I put down. I mainly working there for experience but I'm not sure how I can go about standing my ground do you have any advice?

    • @LifeofaStudentNurse
      @LifeofaStudentNurse  7 лет назад

      Hiya, thanks for watching my video and commenting. I actually think it's a really good idea to work while you study if you can, especially now with the bursary cuts. Saying that, if you find you cannot manage then you'll just need to discuss that with your manager and the university. First year for me was quite relaxed and I didn't find if hard to work. In fact I worked all the way through my degree except when I was on placement. Do what you can manage.
      About picking up extra shifts. Unfortunately you just have to say no if you cannot to it and except the fact that they might be a but upset about it. You aren't obliged to do any more shifts and there is a pressure and expectation for health professionals to do extra shifts and work unpaid overtime but you just have to say no. It's a really hard situation to be in but unfortunately if you are going into a nursing career you will always have that dilemma.

    • @cyradragons

      Yes. A nurse absolutely needs a stethoscope. How else would we assess heart and bowel sounds?

  • @cosmickitty9533

    Im a little confused...so its very competitive to get into nursing school....why not admit more students and have more nurses so you guys can work less hours...then people will do a better job and not hate work so much.

    • @LifeofaStudentNurse
      @LifeofaStudentNurse  6 лет назад +2

      Money. At least that's what it was when I did my training, because the government paid for it. Now the students have to pay so I think there is probably a problem now where people that would have gone into nursing before, cannot afford to pay the fees.
