That winter olympics speed skating story is glorious. Salt Lake 2002. Australian Stephen Bradbury was coming last and had no hope but ended up winning gold because everyone in front of him fell over. The best part is that the same thing happened to him in the semi-final, too! He crossed the line first (thus qualifying for the final) because everyone else fell over. Now, when you're the underdog in a race, game or competition but win unexpectedly due to someone else's bad luck, we call it 'doing a Bradbury'...😂

Aussie here ... it's all true 😂😂😂. Shark punching is a thing; happens more frequently than one might think. The most famous incident was when Aussie pro surfer Mick Fanning punched a shark that lunged at him while he was sitting on his surfboard during a surfing competition in South Africa. Lots of video footage on RUclips.

You both serve as a timely reminder that there are still plenty of normal, sane, down to earth and decent people in America. It is a requirement of our school system to teach our kids the art of taking the piss out of everyone we might encounter on a daily basis .Indeed if an Australian doesn't indulge in this activity they are considered UnAustralian which is the worst thing you could call an Aussie ,on the flip side if an Aussie doesn't take the piss or make fun of you ,you know that he doesn't like you . I'd comment further but I'm too busy fighting off all the deadly creatures that have taken over the house ,the Emus and Kangaroos are always fighting and those Wombats are messy little bastards who won't clean up after themselves . It's truly hard being an Australian there's so much pressure to drink lots of beer and eat kilos of prawns and remain extremely good looking but we're a dedicated race and someone has tokeep up the image ,so we just buckle up and get the job done .

(Genuine travel tip if you want to come to Australia but hate/scared of snakes, come to the lower states (NSW, Vic, Tas) during the winter. All the snakes are in hibernation as it is colder down there rather than the top of Australia (also too cold for crocs). In Australia, if you have a (usually Scottish) name with a "Mac" in front of it, (Mackenzie, McIntyre, Macdonald etc.) you're almost certainly gonna get called "Macca" by your friends, so people just naturally started calling the fast food joint MacDonalds, "Maccas". It became so prevalent that MacDonalds themselves just started to go with the flow.......when in Rome, right? So now they call themselves "Maccas". Nearly all of their advertising, for example, uses the name "Maccas" and some of their signage as well (as you can see in the photo). BTW, Burger King is called "Hungry Jacks" because when Burger King wanted to expand to Australia, back in the 1970's, the name "Burger King" was already trademarked by a different Australian company, that trademark has expired now and nobody uses it (as far as I know) but Burger King (U.S.) just decided to keep the name that they'd been successfully trading under in Aus.

The whole "punching the shark" thing IS a thing in Australia! As a teenager my father decided I needed coaching in Maths. He sent me to a local University student, whose father (a teacher at my high school) was known as "sharkbite" - nobody knew why. One morning I arrived to find Jeff, his son, wearing shorts but no top, not rare in our sub tropical summer. He had a line of tooth marks that had been sutured, starting at his left hip, running to his right shoulder and across his back to his left hip. His head had been in its MOUTH! He had reached out and punched it in the eye!!! I won't give his full name but if you Google "shark attack Broadbeach Australia" you can find the whole story. Our neighbour was not so lucky - they never found him but found half of his surfboard BITTEN in half. That was at Currumbin in Queensland but doesn't appear in shark statistics because they didn't find the body. Life in Australia 😉

We will make a game or competition out of anything, My husband and I and a few friends in the mid 90s when times were tough started an unusual comp, We have an expression here called "spitting the dummy" which is like a baby spitting out their dummy (pacifier) when not happy, Everyone was spitting the dummy at the time about different things, so one Sunday at the afternoon session at the local pub we decided to have a dummy spitting competition to see who could spit the dummy the furthest. Went and got some dummies, Had a lot of competitors, Spitting the dummy out on the footpath while having a few drinks, The tourists couldn;t work out what was going on.That many interested the road was closed. Publican gave the male winner a bottle of rum and the female winner got a bottle of bourbon. Made it an annual thing for quite a few years, with proceeds going to local charities.

The Macca's thing is real. Aussies often give nickmnames to people based on their surname. Anyone who is Mc or MacSomething can be known as "Macca". Others include "Tommo" for Thompson, "Willo" for Wilson, "Fitzy" for Fitzgerald, Fitzpatrick etc. So the fast food chain McDonald's has been known informally as Macca's here for year. Presumably McDonalds knows how o take a joke because they made the name official by changing thei signs to this. The reason that Burger King is called Hungry Jacks in Australia is that the name Burger King had already been trademarked in Australia and the original franchisee therefore used the variation of the name of a pancake mix, Hungry Jack, which had been trademarked by the owner of Burger King in the US.

Super scary stuff (bush fires are scarier but tend to be more consistant so. ...Yeah, our 'deadly' animals are nothing, it's the weather that's legit terrifying here).

The largest I've ever heard a kangaroo growing to is 7 feet tall. His name was Dougal, and he was raised from a joey in captivity. Yes they do have arms like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and like many other wild animals, it's the bigger males that win the rights to mate with the females. A full grown adult in the wild is about 6 feet tall
