Humans think of time as purely numerical when if you think about it, all it is is the moon orbiting the earth and the earth orbiting the sun. There could be plenty of other ways to tell the time, it's just that numbers make more sense to the human mind.
I know this was written 3 years ago but I think that humans are the ones who made time. I don't think time actually exists outside earth. I mean I think that our universe is infinite. There was no start and there will be no end

I don;t know how my dogs know, but they somehow have figured out their feeding time that is the same every day down to within 1 or 2 minutes & if I am 1 minute late they will come get my attention & let me know they are starving to within an inch of their lives lol
My dog runs to his bed at 4:59 pm every day for dinner, and it's not because he's hungry, because he's always hungry. He knows exactly what time it is.
Many years ago, my parents had a Border Collie, Duke. Duke could tell time. While my father didn't always feed Duke at exactly the same time every day, at exactly 5:00 PM every day, Duke would start barking for someone to feed him. You could set your watches and clocks by Duke. He would not start barking at 4:59, and he would not wait till 5:01. At exactly 5:00 every afternoon, Duke would start barking for his food. And he was an outside dog. He was outside with Gypsy and Bandit. We never noticed anything outside making noises at five o'clock. We don't know why he started barking at exactly 5:00 every afternoon; but he did. You could set your clock by him.
Our Malinois is exactly the same as this.I thought for a while it was to do with the position of the sun, but he always knows when it's 4pm and time for 'tea and biccies', whether or not the sky is overcast or whatever the season is. We talk about his inbuilt Rolex!

She (dog) was so used to whispering and not waking my wife up that instead she put just her head on the bed, right in front of my wife's face & just stared at her so the second my wife woke up she'd be noticed LOL One of my favorite memories of that pup! I work in the canine behavior industry and this is something that I've always wondered about. One of the most prominent and universal ideas I've heard from trainer is that dogs can actually smell the change in air/atmosphere at different times of day. For example, they can smell and feel changes in temperature as the sun rises or sets.
@C C LOL are you serious? I mean, did you type that seriously? God almighty, princess, here's a tissue, dry your eyes before the coronavirus claims you for having no sense of humour.

xoxb2 yes it could be a number of things. But smells don’t disappear just like that, they fade away probably much more like an exponential, ie no matter how much time has passed some smell is always left and but is still decreasing in proportion to how much smell is left and this is theoretically detectable.
Living at home with my parents I woke up for work at the exact time, 7:30. This year I went to Uni, don't really have a sleep schedule. I go home for the weekend and always wake up at 7:30, it's weird.

Animals can tell time. Period. Every day, my horses make their ways through the pasture. At a certain time every day, they are at a certain spot. After breakfast, they make their ways to the back of the pasture and work their ways back to the barn by the end of the day. At 10:30 almost every morning, they are grazing by the arena. They usually drink at the same times, too. I set my clock every morning to get up but my pet pig religiously wakes up at 4:45 am and expects breakfast. His daily routines are so predictable. I can set my watch by his actions, to the minute. The pig and the dog are able to hold their potty breaks the entire day while I'm at work. I put puppy pads down for both, but they never use them. My birds squawk at the same times three times per day. Like clockwork. Also, I have lots of wildlife here on the farm that show up at the same times everyday. Animals can tell time.

What a gorgeous Vizsla! We were owned by a Vizsla for 14 years. She liked to go to bed (yes, she slept on the bed with us) at 9:30 pm. My husband was a night owl, so I usually went to bed first. , And every night at around 9:30 Beka would come to me and bark, whine, nudge and pester until I gave up and went to bed. After the first month of this I always checked the clock when she accosted me, and it was always within 10 minutes on either side of 9:30. She would be confused when we changed the clocks in the spring and fall, but she always got back on track within a day or so. Likewise, the horses at a nearby barn always gathered at the gates of their pastures at 4:30 pm, which is when they were brought in and given dinner. Like Beka, they were confused by the change in fall and spring, but they, too, adjusted within a few days.
Food is a different story... If u will eat for a 2-3 month at 9:00 every morning, after 2-3 month ur stomach will make u feel hungry in about that time every day until u will change the time you used to have breakfast. Stomack has a clock too,for real. But This dog can have a food 24/7...
Nothing in Particular where do you live? What time does school start for you! That seems so early to me. I go to school in the UK. My registration starts at 8:40, lessons at 8:50. There is break at 10:50 to 11:05/10. Lunch is 12:30 to 1:30 and we leave at 3:45.
Yah on more dogs. Would have also liked to see if the dog went back to the normal behavior the next day when they didn't refresh his owner's scent in the room.
Our dogs can tell if we're close to home. They do this bark-kind-of-greeting telling the other that we have arrived and they have different barks for specific individuals. Animals are amazing!
I have never worn a watch and I am extremely good at guessing the time. I am rarely more than 5-10 minutes out and a lot of the time I guess it correctly to the minute. I do this by judging time intervals (e.g. it feels like about 95 minutes after I got up) not by knowing what time it is. I don't see any reason at all why dogs can't do the same.
My dog always used to come to the bus stop to take me back home whenever I would reach the bus stop after school.. He always stood there on time. Dogs do really know time.
There at work, a couple of dogs each day at 5pm, and with a punctual timing they ask (or bark) desperately to be released so they can ran over the store. From Monday thru Friday, as soon as we close the front desk, even if there is sound or people, they go nuts cause they know they are gonna be free to go around. I love them. So much energy and happiness. Despite of all, they run to you to smack your face with their tongues. Its so beautiful. I'm pretty sure they know so much about everything, just because we cant mind what they are thinkin, it doesnt mean they are not thinkin something.
My grandad used to come round every Wednesday evening at around 7pm. Our dog loved him and the amazing thing was she would stand waiting by the front door just before 6 every Wednesday. Suggesting she not only had an idea of the time but also the day of the week! I never understood how she could do that. It seems that would be too long to be basing it on his scent 🤔
Nothing more loving then a dog waking you up in the morning--while in your face. Cats... they want to be fed, then they think "'k, I'm outta here, yo!"
The holland lop bunnies I lived with did. They have kind learnt my daily routine by heart. And if I dared to change the timing, they were sulking. Arnold and Prosper, I've been loving you for the Eternity...and a day ❣️
This same thing happens with our cat. Like a routine. When my dad comes home from work every night at the same time our cat is always waiting in the same spot in the kitchen every time.
My dog used to wait for me at certain times everyday at bus stop..each time varied everyday he was always there.. he also knows every saturday is his treat day hes always jumping for joy on a Saturday morning... dogs most definitely know what day and time it is
When I was a Dalmatian, I woke up my human at the same time every day. The radio came on exactly 5 seconds after I woke him. That is, until daylight savings time happened, and all my efforts were messed up for months.
My old dog was even stranger. My Dad works away a lot and returns different days and different times, but the dog always knew he was coming back 30 minutes before he arrived. Sometimes we didn’t even know he was coming back because he would surprise us, but the dog gave it away 😂
That's something I witnessed when I was a kid. Mom was in sales and had appointments in the pm after 5 o'clock. Not every day and not at the same time every day. Our *cat* would go to the front door and groom itself for a few minutes as if it was waiting for her and then, sure enough, we'd hear Mom unlocking the door and walking in. Cats have excellent hearing and dad and I would often surmise the cat could "hear" her car coming down the street in the evening, but we never actually figured out *how* he knew. :)
Yep dogs have a sense of time, I used to take my dog for a walk at 6.30pm, he would sit in front of the tv near the time trying to get our attention to take him for a walk. Man he was one smart dog, miss him 😪
Greg Caesar we fed them and then domesticated them for protection...we saved each other back in the day. I would’ve loved to see that first happened..Dogs rule
To make this a fair test they need to keep spreading the smell of the owner throughout the house 'resetting the smell' and see if the dog adapts after some time and once again knows when the owner's about to return. Until then I'm not entirely convinced. I think if a cow knows when it's about to rain, a bird knows which way south is ...then it's not even that hard to imagine that a dog can sense what time it is!
It's the scent, their sense of smell is strong. My parents have had dogs together and they first one would always know when I'm coming down the road, so does the one they have now, he always come running up by the door, waiting for me or he climbs up on the sofa and waits by the windows. The second I'm close to the house, he will begin barking like crazy.
Not only the dog but also the parrot. Coz my parrot wake me up at 6am every morning and nag at me when time to eat his lunch and saying wowo when time to sleep...
This makes a lot of sense, it would help a dog to gauge how recently a competitor had been through their territory and left a scent marking. So they know if they have a fight on their -hands- paws.
My dog, who’s 15, seems to know whenever it’s 5pm (dinner time) every single day no matter what we are all doing even if she’s out at the park at 5pm, she’ll still be like “I know it’s dinner time”
Dogs have a sense of time ... My pet Popo is very attached with my husband, and everytime he leaves out of town, he tells her exactly when he is returning, and on that day ....She waits for him ...As if she know ....Its very intriguing.... Or if I tell her , he is coming at this time ....She knows exactly and she is at the window looking outside ... I don't have a theory for it ...But I for sure know ...They have an uncanny sense of time ....
YES! Well, they can for sure pickup on what day it is. My brother’s GORGEOUS pitbull is deathly afraid of the trash truck and wakes up every Monday shaking. Then she knows what day Saturday is because she wakes up ready to go to the park. Every Monday and Saturday without fail. It’s beyond adorable.
A buddy once asked me how his dog recognized turning clocks forward or back. My answer was 'conditioning'.. We live most of our lives by routine. The dogs adapt within a day or two.
I doubt the human mind can be the only thing to sense as time progresses. Animals get bored too. They evolved right there with us, so I can only imagine they understand it to some effect, just not as deeply as our understanding of how we define time.
Well, that was the question. The dog did not appear to really know anything about time. It seemed to only know when the scent of their owner had faded away. Do we as humans really know anything about time? We only know about time relevant to a clock or calendar.
I think its not the sense of smell. They just feel it and the brain tell it to them "its time". If you're familiar to the story of the loyal Japanese Dog "Hachi".. The dog spend his whole life waiting to his owner at the shibuya station for over 11 years. No one will come, but he keeps doing it in the exact time. 6pm everyday until hachi died.
They also make connexion between events and noises from outside, like a bus or a neighbour or kids going home after school. Things we don't hear, but they do.
According to my Bulldog it's always bed time lol.

Claudia Wheatley man i hope she was a good owner.
mine always slept in bed with me unfortunately he passed away recently he was 9
Nothing in Particular where do you live? What time does school start for you! That seems so early to me. I go to school in the UK. My registration starts at 8:40, lessons at 8:50. There is break at 10:50 to 11:05/10. Lunch is 12:30 to 1:30 and we leave at 3:45.
I love the " we were owned". That is so true! ahahahah
I was just clicking on the video bc of the cute Dog in the Thumbnail :)
Same

It’s a Viszla. My family has had them the last 20 years. Awesome dogs
It’s a Hungarian Vizsla. I have one and they are like the best dogs ever along with labs
Hah clickbait (not that I hate it)
For some reason , that house feels so warm ❤
I love you BBC!
Quito-Ecuador
2020
I would have liked to see them test this theory more than once.
Yah on more dogs. Would have also liked to see if the dog went back to the normal behavior the next day when they didn't refresh his owner's scent in the room.
My wife found my dirty socks on the couch. Told her I'm experimenting and shown her this video......Then I realized we don't even have a dog.....
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Or a wife
Damn.thats sad
Hahaha xD you should be a comedian
😂😂😂
Our dogs can tell if we're close to home. They do this bark-kind-of-greeting telling the other that we have arrived and they have different barks for specific individuals. Animals are amazing!
Dogs can’t use clocks, so they’ve developed a sense of time without. Humans would be no different if sun dials and clocks never came into existence.
So true :D
day and night is pretty much the time for animals
I have never worn a watch and I am extremely good at guessing the time. I am rarely more than 5-10 minutes out and a lot of the time I guess it correctly to the minute. I do this by judging time intervals (e.g. it feels like about 95 minutes after I got up) not by knowing what time it is. I don't see any reason at all why dogs can't do the same.
Some people can wake up at a particular time regardless of whatever time they slept.
yeah, it's called looking at the sky.
My dog always used to come to the bus stop to take me back home whenever I would reach the bus stop after school.. He always stood there on time. Dogs do really know time.
Not once have I ever assumed that only the human mind can grasp the concept of time.
Poor dog just wants to greet his human after a long day away from him... science has gone too far
I hope your joking right
LOL this comment. you win.
I certainly can't. It's I-Should-Go-The-Fuck-To-Sleep O'clock and I'm still watching pupper videos.
Dog is the best real friend with unconditional love.
Whenever the Simpsons theme tune played at 6pm my dog would wait at the door for my dad. Dogs are awesome
Dogs are amazing
I can't live without my dog ♥️

Of course that dog can tell time, it's a WATCH dog
av8rr deserves more upvotes
There at work, a couple of dogs each day at 5pm, and with a punctual timing they ask (or bark) desperately to be released so they can ran over the store. From Monday thru Friday, as soon as we close the front desk, even if there is sound or people, they go nuts cause they know they are gonna be free to go around. I love them. So much energy and happiness. Despite of all, they run to you to smack your face with their tongues. Its so beautiful.
I'm pretty sure they know so much about everything, just because we cant mind what they are thinkin, it doesnt mean they are not thinkin something.
This video demonstrates the intelligence of an animal and It's amazing how animals use their abilities. That makes them unique.
Every living thing knows when it’s time for lunch.
You knew very well that I HAD to click on this video when I saw the thumbnail. You sir, are using your powers for evil.
Nothing more loving then a dog waking you up in the morning--while in your face. Cats... they want to be fed, then they think "'k, I'm outta here, yo!"
Not true. My cat has food always on the bowl and she still comes to us to sleep at night or wake us up in the morning. Cats love us too.
The holland lop bunnies I lived with did. They have kind learnt my daily routine by heart.
And if I dared to change the timing, they were sulking.
Arnold and Prosper, I've been loving you for the Eternity...and a day ❣️
first thing I do when I wake up is to give my dog her pills (for heart disease) with a treat. If I oversleep, she comes to my room and wakes me up.
This same thing happens with our cat. Like a routine. When my dad comes home from work every night at the same time our cat is always waiting in the same spot in the kitchen every time.
I should go to sleep early
3am:
My dog used to wait for me at certain times everyday at bus stop..each time varied everyday he was always there.. he also knows every saturday is his treat day hes always jumping for joy on a Saturday morning... dogs most definitely know what day and time it is
The best thing to come out of the BBC
When I was a Dalmatian, I woke up my human at the same time every day. The radio came on exactly 5 seconds after I woke him. That is, until daylight savings time happened, and all my efforts were messed up for months.
Ur a human
(:LUIS(: he's actually a undercover spacecanoe called Raymond Luxury-yacht, but he writes his name "throat-wobbler mangrove"
*Plot Twist:*
_The day of the experiment was daylight savings time and the clocks moved back 1 hr._
Way to go humans. Thousands of years living side by side with us, and it took a smelly British couple to figure out how we tell time.
Ur a human
(:LUIS(: Thats kinda racist.
I don't think it's the only way they can tell time thought.
Smell a lot better than a yank covered in bacon grease from Burger king.
Dog:
*”We’ve been tricked, We’ve been backstabbed, We’ve been quite possibly bamboozled”*
5 minutes before 4, my dogs dinner time, they both go absolutely nuts. Every single damn day. They know time. 100%.
Mannnn this was Way too short.
Very Interesting. I need More
JOHNNY SAID “hey son” TO THE DOG OMGGGGG 😭
In the morning my dog opens my door ;-;
And jumps on me
He’s 120 lbs
3 minutes and 29 seconds more interesting than virtually anything on American tv.
Yep dogs have a sense of time, I used to take my dog for a walk at 6.30pm, he would sit in front of the tv near the time trying to get our attention to take him for a walk. Man he was one smart dog, miss him 😪
It kinda reminded me how flowers are able to tell time, they open when the sun is up and close when it’s down. It’s another way to tell time.
What did we do to deserve dogs? ❤️
Greg Caesar we fed them and then domesticated them for protection...we saved each other back in the day. I would’ve loved to see that first happened..Dogs rule
Chuck Schick
It was a RHETORICAL QUESTION, CHUCK.
Greg Caesar I know bud...hahahahahahaha relax
Yeah to see that first happening would be a treat.
We didn’t do anything. We MADE them this way. Dogs are humanity’s greatest invention
my dogs know 3pm exactly for their supper, but they follow the sun I literally move carpets around to accommodate their sunbathing
It shows how much a dog is concerned about his hoomans when they don’t come home on time.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Consistant, repeat behaviour. Dogs are quick to recognise these behaviour patterns. Good poker players.
0:08 "They leave the house at the same time"
*man walking out the door as the lady enters the kitchen in a robe*
They leave the house individually at the same time everyday. That's what they meant.
When I get this video recommend to me at 4am
I don’t need sleep, I need answers!
According to my Beagle it’s always dinner time.
Same for Cockers, she literally looks at me as ''Im hungry'' 90% of times and ''Im starving, God damn it!!'' when she is really hungry :DD
Ok this is quite remarkable. Dogs are endlessly fascinating (as Well as being adorable)
Aww look at the handsome Vizla boy!
"Rut ro they riggered me rout"
..lol
Farmers know the time by looking at the sun. Pretty accurate too !
Fantastic companion dogs are. Your life will definitely turn towards a little cheery if you give them love .
Should be done on many dogs and multiple time to test this theory
do you know why? its because dogs aint dumb
Interesting theory that. Narrows just about everything down
Not only the dog but also the parrot. Coz my parrot wake me up at 6am every morning and nag at me when time to eat his lunch and saying wowo when time to sleep...
I will not lie. The wide eye doggie pick is what got me here...that dog is freaking cute.
This makes a lot of sense, it would help a dog to gauge how recently a competitor had been through their territory and left a scent marking. So they know if they have a fight on their -hands- paws.
my dog always know the right time when i arrive home too
My dog, who’s 15, seems to know whenever it’s 5pm (dinner time) every single day no matter what we are all doing even if she’s out at the park at 5pm, she’ll still be like “I know it’s dinner time”
Dogs have a sense of time ...
Humans: this dog's instict is fascinating
Dog: *actually just looks at the clock*
I think its not the sense of smell. They just feel it and the brain tell it to them "its time".
If you're familiar to the story of the loyal Japanese Dog "Hachi"..
The dog spend his whole life waiting to his owner at the shibuya station for over 11 years. No one will come, but he keeps doing it in the exact time. 6pm everyday until hachi died.
They also make connexion between events and noises from outside, like a bus or a neighbour or kids going home after school. Things we don't hear, but they do.
Maaann look! He lives in that house so his scent is everywhere...
