I don't know if you have solved this yet, but in case you haven't. try bridging across the starter solenoid and see if it does makes the noise. my thought here is, to me it sounds like the contacts in the solenoid bouncing when they first engage. this can be caused by a few different things including but not limited to... weak battery, weak solenoid, or weak relays.
I have the same year grizz.. Mine started doing the same thing right after installing a new stator?? WTF.. It still runs great but it makes strange clicking and winding noises for the first few seconds. Then sometimes it doesn't do it at all???
i believe it's the bendix gear, which still hasn't been changed. The bike has some engine work that needs to be done, but i'll tackle that over the winter i guess.
sorry for this EXTREMELY late reply, the grizz still runs, but needs some work that hasn't been done yet! I ended up buying a new arctic cat mudpro 700 and love it, and i've just been procrastinating on getting the grizz looked at properly
Mine does this too. It’s been doing it for about a year now doesn’t seem to hurt it. I find if I have it hooked to a car battery it provides it with I guess enough voltage to turn over the motor plus power the ignition coil and it seems to turn over a lot smoother..starter seems to make less noise as well.
changed the bendix gear and it was all good, the 600's were pretty finicky from what i understand and let me tell ya she's definitely that!!! but she runs well, but does have a tendencey to over heat a bit, but i changed the oil and that actually helped out a bit too

Did you ever figure it out, I’m pretty sure it’s the starter clutch thats under the side cover.
it the starter clutch not the starter and also check the flywheel for chip teath....

Oh it happened to ours it’s gonna get worse you have to fix it quick it’s the Bendix gear
How did u change the bendix gear? How did you remove the flywheel?

Same thing with mine do u know what it is
you might have to use shims on aftermarket starters
Thanks for posting your videos on the 600 grizzly. I’m trying to get one sorted out now. Do you have any updates?

Bendix not a big deal maybe change it. Its under the starter. Its got a one way bearing this is 100% the problem there is vids online.
I plan on changing it, once things settle down a bit, but i've since purchased a new atv
The one way is on the other side of the four wheeler. 100 percent misinformation dude.
When my battery is low it does that. If the battery is all the way charge it starts perfectly.
did you ever find out how to fix your problem

They sound like that. Mine always sounded that way
Starter clutch
I have the same wheeler they do that its normal they a messed up wheeler

How'd you know when the stator went bad?
Mine just died on me recently, and I'm stumped
Starter clutch
Is this the same thing as the one way starter clutch? I have the 400 Yamaha.
