Great ideas! What I loved to do is have specific capsules for outings: dressy capsule, gardening capsule, exercise capsule, etc. That has helped me get certain items out of my closet and put in a different place. My dressy capsule is in a different closet while my gardening and exercise capsules were able to fit into a drawer. I always keep a donation bag and a sell bag in my closet and as I try on I eliminate. When that bag is full it is out of there. Works wonderful. I also rotate my hangers when I have worn something. It works and then they go in the bag. Thanks Nancy for all that you share with us!
I’ve been using the turn the hanger back for years. It works! My daily clothes choice is more often than not driven by temperature, weight or sleeve length. (Thank you Menopause!) I would love to organize by color but it just doesn’t work for me. So I organize by tanks, sleeveless, short sleeve, long sleeve, sweaters etc. but I do colors within those groups. There is just something so satisfying about a well organized closet! Thank you for sharing such practical tips!
I have my clothes divided into sections. All my cardigans are together, all long-sleeve shirts, all short sleeve, work logo wear..... I'm going to try and sort them by color. I reorganized a drawer ovre the weekend. It contained all my shorts/leggins/sweats. I really looked at each piece and the drawer looks so much better and my donation box is overflowing.
That's great! I think sorting by classification is a great way to start, followed by sorting by color within each group. It sounds like you will try organizing by color first, then by classification. Let me know which way you prefer! 😍
I already have a donation bag and a repair pile in my closet. Now, I need to work on one in / 8:39 one out as my closet is staring to be overrun, as well as the reverse hanger trick and organize by color. Capsules sound like a really great idea but I don't have the bandwidth to do that now. 😊
Great reminders. I was in a style rut, buying with no plan. I do declutter frequently. I rearranged(I have a nice closet set up, but wasn't using it) how things are hung, putting scarves that go with certain outfits with the area the outfits are in instead of by themselves-a visual reminder to add one. Shaking things up helped a lot.
I went straight away and organised my hanging clothes into colours and took out clothes I don’t fit ( currently, always working on a the weight) also put off season clothes towards the back. Our season here in New Zealand is heading into summer. Thanks for tips. 😊
I’m so glad to have found your channel, my closest is busting the seams , I am going to clean out the closet then start the 1 in 1 out rule, maybe even 2 out for now . Thank you 😊
I love closet tips. I live in a small home so being organized is super important. I found a small but tall rolling rack that has a bottom shelf. I roll it into my small laundry room and that’s where I hang coats, hats and bigger bags like a back pack or larger shopper. In the small closet I have a small amount of dresses and pants/jeans and hanging tops. I also have shoes and hang bags in baskets. I have to really think through every purchase to make sure I can wear it a few ways. I don’t find blazers flattering on me so I buy thinner puff vests, lighter jackets and thinner sweaters. All things I can layer without feeling or looking like a stuffed pepper. Scarves go in a basket in the closet during the colder months so I can remember to add them to an outfit. I also added one clothes hook on the wall to hang my outfit for the next day. I have started taking photos of my outfits and I created a categories on my IPhone app called Freeform. The hook has really made things helpful. Some days I use spare time to create outfits for future looks and set them on the hook and take photos. It’s really fun playing in my small closet 😊😊😊
@@dianedeferrari3888 I got the rolling clothes rack from amazon. I believe it was under $100 and it was very easy to put together. It also has wheels so I can roll it out and sweep and mop that area easily. I use the bottom shelf to hold my printer and small carpet shampooer. In that same laundry area I had a handyman put up a nice wall hook on a thin wood plank to hang my broom, mop, vacuum and dog bag for his leash and sweater.
I’ve always had a capsule wardrobe with just black pieces , and of course blue jeans too. I’m a big thrift store gal and I look for pieces that will mix and match with everything I own. I did switch out my hangers to new velvet ones and you are right on point it gives a nice simple feel to it. In Pennsylvania we always switched out our seasonal clothes, my mom was big on that mainly because we didn’t have big closets or bedrooms.
LOL, Yes! Our Pennsylvania "old home" closets are very small or non-existent. I love that you have an all black and denim capsule - that makes it so easy to mix and match all those thrifted items in with the capsule neutrals! 💕
I have used the reverse hanger trick a LOT. I also have put dates in purses.....then looked back at ones that didn't get used and re-evaluated if that purse is worth keeping if not used in a long time.
I have everything in my closets. I start with white tops, white sweaters, white pants. Then black, blue, red, etc. i keep my jackets, blazers etc. in another closet. Never have to switch anymore. I live in Houston Texas 55 to 80:in one day.❤❤ I’m 73 and it saves me alot of energy.
Some of the organising ideas you mention I have been doing: high quality hangers, colour coordination, seasonal wardrobe swabs and closet dividers. Now, inspired by the capsule you presented, I would like to try a capsule wardrobe. I also like your idea of reversing the hangers.
Matching hangers, swap out every 6 months - and I also hang sweaters (which lots of people think is a no-no)but I fold them over the hanger bar. If I can't see all my clothes I forget about pieces. Love a capsule - ideal for someone that is retired, and it makes it so much easier to put together an outfit (although, even with this, I still find that I never have the right thing to wear!!). Such good points -and having pieces I don't wear was made obvious by the reverse hanger method - apparently I don't like to wear button up shirts (except a denim one)! I think because they can only be used once before needing to be laundered and ironed!
Hi Fiona, I love your approach with the matching hangers and the seasonal swap-it helps keep everything in check! I totally get hanging sweaters; it keeps all your pieces visible. Capsule wardrobes do make selecting outfits easier, right? And it’s so revealing what we actually wear with the reverse hanger method. Maybe it’s all about finding those few special pieces that make the extra care worth it! Thanks for sharing your insights!😀
I plan to work on building more of a capsule wardrobe in 2025. I already change my clothes around seasonally, but since I have limited storage space, I use the back part of the closet that's hard to reach for the out of season clothes and the front portion for the current season.
Watched your video of 30 things you no longer need the other day and went through my closet. Didn't remove a lot but it did help. I do love having all my hangers the same. Last christmas my sister redid her bedroom and closet and I bought he a big box of new velvet hangers as she had all kinds of mismatched ones! Trying to keep up on the color coordination in my closet as well. I like the idea of reversing the hangers as well, I haven't tried that one yet. Thank you!
I do a slightly different version of the reverse hanger trick. My closet is large enough to have a Spring/Summer side and a Fall/Winter side so I don’t have to pack anything away. So the first week of January I turn all my hangers backwards. As I wear things and out them back I hang them normally. So the next January before I reverse my hangers again I pull everything out that’s still backwards because I know I haven’t worn them that year and I donate them.
Forgot to mention this in my first comment. Because of you, I have been thinking of ways to improve my closet. The lighting was off as I needed more. My husband hung a wonderful light that goes on with motion. I now have a wonderfully lite closet and now I actually like working in it. Thank you!
After I finished this video, I realized I could do another video entirely devoted to closet dividers! There are lots of types available, from rings to separate hanging clothes to dividers to isolate folded clothes on shelves and many organizers for shoes, belts, and jewelry. Keep an eye out for that video!
I know on one of your last videos, I said I was going to do that with my closet. Today was a chilly day, not really cold. So that’s making me want to do it now. I had shorts on the other day. My husband is still wearing his shorts. But I’m ready to do it. I’ll just leave a few short sleeve tops in my closet. Otherwise it will get hot again and I won’t have anything to wear. I probably should try a capsule wardrobe. But what would I do with all the rest of my clothes. I need to get it done so I can save some things for my granddaughters. One lives close to me. Two others live out of state. They will be coming to visit the second of January,
Hi Pamela, It sounds like you’re ready to embrace the change, and how thoughtful to consider saving pieces for your granddaughters! Starting with a capsule wardrobe doesn’t mean you must immediately give everything else away. You could store seasonal items or extras and rotate them as needed. The key is finding what works best for you and your lifestyle. Enjoy organizing, and have a wonderful visit with your granddaughters in January! 🥰
I'm considering the monthly/ seasonal review, quarterly, I think. But I'm never going to fall for the "matching hanger" thing again. I have tried this with THREE different hanger styles, only to be unable to match them down the road when I needed more. Cheap or mid-range, I always wind up mismatched in a few years.
I've been using the reverse hanger trick for decades. Every spring (I taught, so I did this on spring break & the timing stuck) I turn my clothes around. If it's still in there backwards in a year, it has to go.
I don’t understand why this is unethical to you. I try to follow this but am not always perfect at doing it. However it does help me with mindful buying instead of impulsive buying.
@ The reason I see it as unethical is because, subliminally, you are encouraging people to buy products they don’t need instead of buying from charities or making their clothes last longer. It’s this constant cycle of buying and clearing out that is difficult to justify, in my opinion. Nevertheless, I respect your opinion and wish you well.
@@Annie-ez4olMaybe you need to follow people who push frugality and minimalism. Those people push the buy nothing, wear your clothes forever, look poor mindset. That probably suits you better.
