Is OS X Yosemite (10.10) a usable version of macOS in 2020?

- Today, I'll be finding out if OS X Yosemite is usable in 2020!
I made this video because of the release of macOS Big Sur, as it completely redesigned the look of macOS. OS X Yosemite also redesigned the macOS pretty heavily back in 2014, so I decided to see if the macOS that changed everything is still usable today!
I use macOS X Yosemite still in 2023, on 2014 MacBook air 11inch, it runs so fast
i have an imac that runs macos mojave in 2024 perfectly fine.
I’ve used a lot of hacks to upgrade my old Air early 2010, since Mojave, Catalina and finally Big Sur. Today, I downgrade my old baby to Yosemite and I love the way the OS is very smooth on my Mac. Yosemite definitely will be my main OS for the next years!
Oh wow! How do you tackle unsupported apps? Or are you just going to use it as a safari book (Chromebook :). ). Oh also unrelated but I heard that El Capitan is a speed boost from yosemite.
It’s much harder using snow leopard as the main os but I still like it because it is pretty

@@NielsDutch1906 most app will work if you use old versions from 2017/2016, you can even use wine to run some modern apps..or parallels desktop.

I stopped using this OS in late 2021, it worked fine for me for all of those years ever since it came out. I think it’s useable if I’m gonna be honest, though it won’t be supported on some applications which is why I upgraded to El Capitan

I want to download Garageband cause its not in my OS X Yosemite. It says I need an ios 11 but when I try to update, there are no updates available. What do I do??
You get the big sur installer (or whatever version you want to install) from apple's website and run it.

I have macbook air 2015 earlier one, I had latest update on this mac, but I had to re install OS some reason , now I have OS X Yosemite . Question is, I can't upgrade to new version...

I think El Capitan is a very good OS too! I picked this version of OS X as a retrospective, as it was the first version of OS X to have the modern design.

Yeah, I guess that can be true too, as it’s basically the same design as Catalina, just with less features.
it can only run on 32-bit systems which could run by macOS "Lion" on macOS 10.7.5 as its final system support and hardware compatibility.

Download the El Capitan app (10.11) from here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683
Open the installer it gives you and it’ll upgrade ya from there.
I don’t recommend using Yosemite , for the past 2 years I’ve been using Yosemite and the big flaw is that half the apps don’t support it. Most of them require mac os 10.11, I recommend upgrading to 10.11 but no further because apple doesn’t support 32 bit apps on 10.15
I agree with you there, though I personally recommend macOS High Sierra (10.13) for 32 bit apps, as it works on Non-Metal Macs as well.
Hey, dude please can you tell me how to download 10.11 Yosemite? I am using OS X 10.10.5, I cannot use Roblox studio, and other apps with this!

@@1035Ghuraba I have Yosemite now and when I try to download High Sierra from the official apple website, it re-directs to iTunes which no longer appears to support Yosemite so how do we upgrade if Itunes has dropped us like a bad habit lol
I'm part of a archive group and we got a ton of old mac os apps and a lot of internal software and stuff as well

@@MattsTech I would recommend doing a review of os x el captain BETA 1 in 2020 (some apps work and some don't) but beta 1 operating systems would disguise itself as the previous os if the date was rolled back before beta 1 was released and if internet is off and catalina did this as well it even hid the new wallpapers

I have used 10.10.5 my whole life as it was my papas computer and he never told us the key to upgrade it + the software required is damaged
Great video i use macOS el capitán because it is the lates version i can use and some apps don’t work but apart of that it works great

i was in mac os big sur and i restarted my computer but it came back to yosemite how can i upgrade from yosemite to big sur i don't have any update on the app store and i don't have to software update button in settings

Honestly Big Sur is perfectly fine on those models, so if you’re willing to upgrade, then you have that option! If you don’t like that version, then I’d suggest Mojave, as that OS is pretty solid as well. Plus you get 32-bit apps with that version as well, so there’s that!

Absolutely yes! Microsoft Office takes a couple more seconds but nothing significant and everything else runs smooth. Btw I have a Macbook Pro Non Retina mid-2012 4GB RAM and HDD

siri did work on yosemite but it was only a feature on macbooks
Siri was released for macOS Sierra for all Macs, prior versions did not have it at all.
correction: OS X Yosemite was the first version of OS X/macOS to introduce Notification Centre widgets.

I have OS X yosemite. My imac is a late 2013. And I need to upgrade but I heard that I can't go to big sur due to the older model I have. Not sure if this is true. Do you know how I can get to 10.12 sierra or el Capitan ? My app store wont let me upgrade. I need it due to not being currently ompatible with the new wacom tablets.
Correct, your model only goes up to 10.15 Catalina officially. You can download Catalina here: apps.apple.com/sg/app/macos-catalina/id1466841314?mt=12

I've taken a break for a while, school combined with this project have made it a pain to make these videos. Making each of these videos takes days of work, and I've just haven't been willing to make them. I'll pick up on it when I have the time. Sorry for any disappointment this reply may have caused.
is there a reason why my Yosemite will not allow me to add extensions to chrome? Everything says item currently unavailable 🤔 do I just need a new Mac?
I’d bet it’s incompatible with Yosemite, yeah. You should be able to update to OS X El Capitan, at least, which would help.
Can you still securely use it in 2023? I have it on a Macbook Pro.
Old OS X doesn’t tend to have security problems, so I’d say it’s okay, just be careful with what you click on. :)

The latest version of macOS still has the DVD player installed, so you're set on any future version!

How are you running this mac os version on unsupported mac?
You can just clone an image of this version of OS X from a supported Mac to the Mac Pro, and it should work just fine once you replace the boot.efi with one the Mac Pro supports.
Yosemite looks nice, still, six years later... Please make a video about Yosemite on a MacMini 2,1 (installation procedure) and how useable it is, i would love to see that :)

you can upgrade to Mac Os 10.13 high sierra, is better option for you.
You can upgrade all of the way to macOS 11 Big Sur if you want the latest macOS, at least for now. You can download the installer for it in the Mac App Store.
If you want 32-bit app support, macOS 10.13 is a good option, but 10.14 is probably the best because it’s the newest OS that can do such and even has newer features like Desktop Stacks and Dark mode.
There a reason to upgrade to mojave? I'm stubborn and never upgraded beyond Yosemite. If it isn't broken, doesn't need a fix.

Can I buy video editing software on a OS X Yosemite 2014 13inch Mack book?? I’m thinking about buy it to edit car videos and such. The MacBook is probably around $150-250
If the Mac is a 2014 model, you can update it to Big Sur, at least, so yeah, that model should work (maybe not the best though) with most editing software out there.

I would prefer it over Sierra, but since Sierra is newer, I would probably pick Sierra over Yosemite if I had to daily it.
I get issues installing Yosimite from snow leopard 10.6.8. Fails. I have tried the terminal date fix. Failed. Anyone know solution.

@@MattsTech That's correct to a certain extent. Mac support only help up to a point because 2006 is obsolete they say. Otherwise all of us know that a 2006 is perfectly workable up to El Capitain as a very robust and reliable machine.
You won't be able to directly update to Yosemite, you'll need to do a clean install with some patches, as no machines from 2006 support Yosemite. There are guides all over Google for what you need. :)
@@MattsTech I flashed the firmware from 1,1 to 2,1. Is that what you meant by patches.
No, since the 1,1 and 2,1 both do not natively support Yosemite, you'll need to use a tool to patch the operating system (specifically the Boot.efi file), or you'll need to patch it yourself. There are several guides out there that will be able to assist you with that. :)

How do you download the 2020 version?
Yosemite’s updates ended in 2017, so there’s no 2020 version. As for the latest version, I’m unsure where I found my copy.

I think it's slow because the ram is 16mhz ddr2. You may have 16gb but your ram and hd is slow
The RAM is actually 666Mhz, not 16. 16Mhz RAM couldn’t even begin to fathom a newer OS X like that lol. However, the spinning disk drive will slow it down, along with the 666Mhz RAM, as neither of those are very fast.
