Same here but my dad was playing the reveille when i had to wake up early in the morning too not only summer (and winter.. and autumn.. and spring.. ) Not always.. but sometimes.
ok at 6 am I will place speakers on both sides of our bed, where wife is sound asleep, crank up the volume , and play this. btw This may be my last post
To everyone questioning why its such a small flag, its a post flag, used for everyday purposes, they use the garrison flag for parades and special occasions. They also use a smaller storm flag during bad weather
I was base HG as an E-4, and we were lucky enough to have a crank, but getting the bigger flags up before the song ended was a pump and a half lol. Fun times!
Sorry, if you're going to use the big pole, you need an appropriate-sized flag - regardless of the weather. Wal-Mart manages it at each location, West Point should be able to as well.
As an Army vet I can tell you that the canon will wake you up no matter where you are on that campus! They are very loud! I always wondered how the cadets woke up each morning lol! Love the West Point cadets.
I was an MP at Arlington Hall Station after coming back from Overseas. We had the duty of raising an lowering the flag and it was always to me an honour. Sadly but proudly I also served on the gun crew there at Arlington Hall for the funeral of President Kennedy.
Raised those colours myself on many a post all over the world...reveille still pops one's eyes open in the morn. Guess it's trained onto the nerves and never goes away even after all these years...
I do a stand to ceremony in my house every single day. I got out of the Army years and years ago, and things are only right when I am able to do my Reveille salute.
that is NOT what Paul revere said because at that time they were all British. he said the (maybe) the regulars are coming). Longfellows poem got it wrong.
I used to live across the tracks from Fort Benjamin Harrison, heard it every morning. Makes me nostalgic. Usually I'd been up for an hour but that told me it was time to head to work pronto to beat traffic!
I went to military school Mount Saint Joseph Military Academy close to West Point for the same exact uniform and woke up the reverly every morning for 3 years also play in the military schools drum and bugle Corps I was as a drummer thank you for posting oh and we were taught by the cadets children and play bugles but thank you for posting great memories thank you
My good friend got an appt. at West Point to play hockey, absolutely hated it, and was back home and a hockey player at Univ. of Michigan before Christmas. He was kind of a punk back then, I don't know how he ever thought he'd fit in at WP. I think it's what his dad wanted.
and now for a little history, the extension you see at the top of the flag pole is the flag pole or part of the flag pole from the USS Maine that was sunk in Cuba back in 1889

As a cadet i heard the cannon and bugel for the first time at fort hood this week and i was stunded because it was a supprise and joint reserve base wasnt the same but it was cool to see i like it
Old post, but I find this hilarious. I actually convinced my mom to use Reveille as her alarm on her phone. She doesn't have it anywhere near loud enough to get her out of bed though. For reference: I find it hilarious because the last family member to be in any branch was my great-grandfather who served in the Coast Guard.
I was born and raised at the point and when we lived at 336 washington Rd in the 40's, I remember that flag being a lot bigger then that. Back then it was a real Garrision Flag. I also belive the cannon went off at 04:30, not 06:30. Boy how times have changed.
SFC. Dill's sounding appears the proper tempo for the full drum-and-bugle-corps treatment, one possible example being beaten with two 18"x20" long drums at full snare tension and one 26"x22" bass drum.
I am not joining the service and I am glad that I never did, but if I did, I would tell them to buzz off as soon as they told me to get up. I would also tell them that they are pukefaces
That appears to be the “Storm” flag flown on inclement weather days, which is the smallest of the three main types of flags flown over Military Installations, ( the others being the normal daily Post Flag and the very large “ Garrison Flag” for holidays). My question though is that it appears are they hoisting a frayed / torn color. I would never have allowed that when I was a active duty MP NCO on Flag Duty.
Daryl Twigg it isn’t frayed. Watch closely. I believe you might be seeing the folds hanging down which then looks like an uneven edge. No one in the military would hoist a frayed flag.
@@blossomlate I agree that no military person would allow a frayed flag to be flown. Unfortunately in this case the flag was indeed frayed. At .22 sec in to the video the frayed sections can clearly be seen at the flags edge, not folds but you can see actual red thread hanging from the stripes.
Yes, retreat ceremony. The retreat ceremony serves a twofold purpose. It signals the end of the official duty day and serves as a ceremony for paying respect to the flag. Because the time for the end of the duty day varies, the commander designates the specific time for the retreat ceremony. ruclips.net/video/I2utc9EH7g8/видео.html
I was with the MP Company there from "89-90" and that is what I was told. Not verified if true or not, but what was relayed to all new transfers to the company . The MPs were responsible for the raising and lowering of the flag and most days the bugle call was a recording. I fired that canon quite a number of times. Even had it misfire once during a ceremony the cadets were conducting for retreat. Long pause between "Retreat" and "To the Colors" on that day. It was a shell casing loaded with a blank shotgun cartridge & you had better make sure the barrel was clear before loading to fire or you might find - who knows what, stuffed down in it to include flammable objects. The MP company was also the honor guard for burials, color guards and most other military ceremonies conducted in and around the New York - New Jersey area. Even took part in Gen. James Gavin's funeral on post.
I wouldn't want to be in the military, but this is a cool way to get someone out of bed. I was once with my girlfriend who was helping me out at a convention where I was exhibiting my business, and I played this video because I wanted her to get out of bed so she could get ready to go to the exhibit hall with me to my booth.
The reason for the canon, is for anyone, anywhere on the Post to stop what they are doing and turn towards the flag and salute, see the flag or not, if you did not the MP's where on you.
Ah that cannon. I was a kid on Ft Sam and that cannon woke up up every day for school with it vibrating through the houses. I assume some guy thought it was funny to put the cannon near officer housing.
Does anyone know the type of signal gun used? What is the correct protocol for firing the signal gun (or cannon?) at Reveille? E.g., how many reports are sounded and what is the correct timing? I assume the video was edited at that point since we never see reloading, just pulls of the lanyard and firing, which seem to be at somewhat irregular timing.
I was with the MP Company there back in 89-90 and the flag pole was reported to be one of the masts from the battleship Maine. That's why it looks all catawampus.
Inspiring! However, it seems such a small flag for such a large/high pole. They should put a BIG flag up there. My local car dealership flies a larger flag than this. GO BIG, Westpoint!
I thought the same thing. A massive flagpole and a miniscule flag. I know they have standard sizes to use for certain things but that looked really small.
Also, I never saw the flag going up until the last second. It seemed like they were just running rope through the top since we never saw the flag going up.
If that pole is what I think it, it used to be belong on the mast of the battleship Maine that was sunk in Cuba and started the Spanish American War. Why it is at West Point I'm not sure?:)
My dad served as an Army Ranger and took great amusement in waking up our family with this in the middle of the summer... T__T

Woke up to my father playing this on his hand bugle.
At Ft Knox, the drills threw an empty garbage can into my barracks for reveille.
Not as pretty, but I guess it did the job.
A drill sergeant is enough to do the job, me thinks XD
coyotemojo When I was at Knox, everyone was up 40 mins prior to shave and stuff.

OUR SOLDIERS,OUR TRUMPETS,OUR FLAG UP,THIS IS GREAT.
It was so nice of the Army to play Reveille on the 239th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Semper Fi, ΥΣΜΧ
First thing I noticed, too. They could at least have played "Semper Fidelis", though.

Our FLAG will fly forever!!!!!! 🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
The people who like this are probably the ones who watched the National Anthem before Saturday morning cartoons. Great time to be alive.
The cannon fire combined with the reverse slowmo footage at the beginning was nice!
When we were in basic training in the 70's, they played reveille and threw on the lights at the same time. It usually did the trick.

Why has the single cannon shot been edited into three shots? Looks very, abnormal, to put in politely.

That flag was real raggedy at the ends. The point commander needs to address this issue.

But In the french army any time the flag is raised it's an other call : "To the flag"
