Really underappreciated game. I didn’t get round to playing it until 2022, but thought it was a much better tribute/reimagining of 1 and 2 than Banana Mania was! The physics in particular surprised me in their faithfulness and even the sound effects were much better. It just felt much more authentic to the series’ roots than Banana Mania despite being on the humble DS.
So, in terms of numerical statistics, yeah, Banana Blitz does break down each monkey by characteristics like ball size, acceleration, boost speed, jump, etc. However, in SMB 1, 2, Touch and Roll etc. each of the monkeys have different unclassified weights that affect their handling and speeds (Aiai is balanced, Meemee is slightly lighter than Aiai, Baby is super lightweight and Gongon is very heavy). That's what I was referring to in the video, hope that helps!
I feel like I really overlooked the handheld monkey ball games back in the day. I thought Monkey Ball Jr would be in 2D so never picked it up, and I thought Touch and Roll would go all out on the touch screen gimmicks so never got it either. I would have loved both games when I was younger!
They're both pretty good! Jr. is a very technically impressive game for the GBA, but it's probably an easy miss if you've played the original Monkey Ball (it runs so slow lol)
I just tried it, and touch and roll actually works great on the 3ds! This is notable because 3ds has the circlepad, which is by far a superior control method to both the touch screen and dpad options :D Just food for thought - awesome video!
Doesn’t the circle pad just emulate the 8 directions on the d-pad? I played with touch, which works really well, you just have to master it which is exactly like the analogue stick on the older games - I was rubbish at first but became better over time.
Touch & Roll was actually the first Monkey Ball game I owned for myself (not the first one I played, that title belongs to Adventure funnily enough). I was pretty disappointed after I found out that most, if not all levels were reused from the previous console games, but it did make me appreciate the fun game design. I hope that if they make anymore Monkey Ball games they keep those same level design ideas for even better, more-challenging stages.
This game brings back so many memories
Used to play it a lot in sleepovers
Your videos are incredibly underrated and it's an absolute treat when you upload. I'm surprised you haven't surpassed 1,000 subs yet.
Thank you so much! It's comments like these that push me to keep going :)
The Touch & Roll OST is such a bop honestly
It really IS honestly. It's on par with the classic Monkey Ball music, in my opinion

Wait, the monkeys have different stats?
I thought that was only a thing in Banana Blitz!
Where did you hear this? I've never heard this before.

Glad you enjoyed the video, and I'm glad you found a control method that works for you! :)
I’m gonna get it soon. Pretty dang cheap online so very soon!
@@jackjensensplaythroughsrev49 That's awesome. Hope you enjoy the game!

@@jamesgames4553 I think you're right, but it's still a lot more ergonomic than using a dpad IMO :)

There really is just something special about the classic level design. Hopefully, Banana Mania is a catalyst for a return to that style of levels.
