I know I'm gonna get hate for this, the reason why there are so many characters that are only shown in the background, is because they are characters going to show up when a first season is made and in the comics. So giving them a bit of screen time makes us fans happy.
Some of the thinks I dont like about the pilot is that when some characters go into a zoom out shot, like when alastor says: the punishment is THIS!" and the camera zooms out to view the hotel. All the characters have weird proportions and look less cartoony which throws me off, also sometimes it looks like that the characters are just behind a backdrop.
In my opinon, she'd have to somewhat show them all in episodes, maybe be crammed or something, but I do like that she's trying to show them off! And yeah, some characters look like they don't belong-

The reason they get less detailed is because they only have as many pixels as they has when they drew the characters normally. Making them smaller and taking away some detail is a common animation trick to make sure the character is still readable but in scenes like that usually the trick is to make you look around the actual room. They could have done a lil better on that tho I agree xD
Its like other 2D cartoons duh, when the character is far away they'll just put dots for their eyes

The “useless” characters he said in the start are actually angels or “exorcists” sent to hell every year to kill demons because of over population. So they are very important
then that should have been made clearer to the audience. if a character is that important why make it so hard to know what they are and what purpose they serve?

This is going to get a ton of crap I feel. Just because some hazbin fans and/or Stans might not like the critiquing.
I mean, it's partly true, but this mostly relates to such cricitcs like "Oh why is the background so red?" "Angel being a drug addict and a prostitute is homofobic" "Why are all the characters so thin, it''s bodyshaming" etc.
Hazbin Hotel Pilot went through some really undeserved critisism, which doesn't mean that it's perfect.
The artist style changes, some of the jokes, sound effects, yeah, this pilot has some serious flaws, but at least for me it does a kind of a good job at explaining the universe (of course, only when you actually dig a little, I'm looking at you Animation Sins and your sin at 2:15).
I honestly agree with many of the sins but some of them are reaaaaaaaally undeserved, so yeah, i guess that just when you sin an animation that has got a very loving fandom, you should be more careful at choosing what will you sin than normally, or else you are going to get quite a lot of shit.

If I see smear frames being sinned in the next ep, I just want to let you know that smear frames have even been used in cartoon network shows. (Or adult swin even) I know that there is a lot of them, but what can I say? I'm not an animator, I just want to make this clear before any haters of hazbin go looking in the comments for people that like the show. Like yeah, we know that you dont like the show, but saying it sucks. 1. You aren't speaking for everyone. 2. There is always a falt to every show, even for fans. 3. This is a half an hour pilot?! How many pilots have you seen that are this long, have decent animation and good story? Ok, I'm know I'm rambling on, but this video would have been better if viv also worked with this video.

Personally, I enjoy watching this Hazbin Hotel pilot episode, but I do agree some things could have been better and different! Still really good though, for being a RUclips animation.
@JosiexJosie Yup! Look at Helluva Boss. I know a lot of people who liked Hazbin Hotel weren't the biggest fans of the Helluva Boss pilot but as the actual show began to get released, it became way better! Pilots aren't the end all, be all for a show. They can always get better.

I hate to say it, but this video is incredibly mean-spirited and nit-picky. An important tenet of film-criticism is to consider the source behind the material you are discussing. While popular, Hazbin Hotel was created by a small team of animators and was a relatively low-budget. It was made primarily through online coordination, not by an in-house studio. My argument here is not that Vivian and her team are “beneath” critique, but that pointing out such small and unnoticeable technical details comes across as callous given the circumstances under which Hazbin Hotel was made. It is difficult to take some of the genuine points you make seriously when so much of the video gives me the impression that this whole thing is a bad-faith attempt to tear Hazbin apart. Overall, the tone of your video confuses me, because I initially thought that it was intended to be humorous, but you go into such specifics about the technical errors of the animation that (as stated above) this reads more as an actual critique than a light-hearted jab. If you are going for a more humorous tone, it is better to keep your comments and observations short and witty and avoid including every single criticism you have in the finished video. Obviously your team prefers analyzing detail, which is a valuable skill and has the potential to be interesting to watch, but I think the depths in which you expose said details is better suited to looking at big budget movies. I enjoyed your Incredibles 2 and Scoob! videos, because the omission of technical quality in big studio, multi-million dollar film is more of a conscious choice. As opposed to an unintentional consequence of having a limited budget and small team which (in my opinion) is conquering relatively new and extraordinary circumstances of animation production.

This should be called (Everything wrong with the animation/art in Hazbin hotel) I usually like these kinds of videos just for some laughs but I wasn't expecting every complaint to be on the animation....Just an opinionated tip. Mabey make everything into one shorter video. If your video is in 5 different parts and just 15 mins of pointing out issues with animation....people may get bored really fast. find more things worth pointing out or you will get a lot of haters from the series.

I do think a channel called Animation Sins should be fine sticking with criticizing animation but I don't know if Hazbin Hotel's pilot was the right thing for this. Maybe Helluva Boss because it has more episodes but Hazbin Hotel was the very first thing that Spindlehorse made so obviously there's going to be animation errors and things they could've done better. But when the series comes out, having been made by a more consistent team, this is just gonna look like the fluke that it was. It doesn't change that this was a great accomplishment for Spindlehorse, making a 30 minute animated pilot with a team entirely of freelancers.
Bojack horseman is literally the most unfunny show my eyes have ever laid on. I'll take Hazbin over this any day thanks

Genuinely, I love animation sins.
But if you come and dare judging a project that's been in planning for YEARS with a massive team of animators of all different styles, characters that show up in the pilot for later videos of the same series, or about characters being a certain way, then you lost me there.
Vivziepop puts so much work into this while a channel like yours gives them shit.
Come on, if you think you can do way better than what she did, I dare you to REANIMATE THIS WHOLE PILOT and then we'll see.
Because nothing has not a single problem. This is one of the animations that I really love, just because it is so damn well done for the length of the video and the storyline. So don't give it shit when you don't even really know about future plans.

Reminder this is only the pilot and every animation has a certain budget. The crew hired more animators recently for their music video which I'd love for you go over sometime soon! Like seriously the animation has improved immensely! The camera movement is my favorite part! I think the lack of camera movement was my main problem with the pilot. Hopefully the shows animation will be just as good as the music vid!
Oh Also Steven universe has a lot of inconsistencies when it comes to it's animation.Take peridot for example, her size difference fluctuates throughout the show due to the amount of story boarders. Of course Charlie's inconsistencies are back to back so it is a different situation, but honestly it's so small it's barely noticeable for an average viewer that doesn't dedicate their time studying animation. Sorry for the long sentence 😅

Another thing is that Viz is a professional animator, so the lazy gif of a guy running shouldn't have been an issue at all. AND the consistency.
As much as i love this pilot, i will admit that it does have its issues. I fully understand why some people don't like it. Personally, I really hope it gets turned into a full on series, and that it is actually good and doesn't get ruined by censors/executives

Honestly, the *only* part I had a problem with, was when you added the style switch counter, keep in mind it was a "slightly random" grouping of animators and people working on the project, and was done with absoultely 0 studio behind it to help keep things a bit more cohesive with people being able to spend more time matching style, as this was not their "full time job" initially, and until it was out, for the amount of people that helped, they didnt get enough I felt to be able to ditch their jobs for it, so it really is understandable that some of them might rush and their own style slips out a lot
Addon Edit: (NOT Hating, still even gave the vid a like, as I love cinima cins and this is great as I love hazbin as well, its good for what it is, and for casual viewing is amazing, and with all the story being pre planned I have a **LOT** of hope for it, especially if a studio or someone grabs it up and lets viv have full control still but just giving her more resources for a better show [with adult themes it has, half hoping Adult Swim grabs it, they seem to understand letting the creator do their thing])

I understand nitpicking things like this and this will probably help Vizie pick out problems for her actual series if it comes through, but this IS a pilot episode. It’s meant to set things up, make a premise, and show what COULD become a polished series. If you watch some behind the scenes stuff (which I highly recommend because they’re hilarious) you will learn that originally this concept and story was a total fucking train wreck because of the people Vizie worked with, but because she loved the characters and premise so much she went forward and made a product anyway. This is an amazing animation and will always be a monumental moment for me, and even though there are mistakes I still love it to pieces.

As an animator, You want everything to be visually clear its hard to look at lots of details in only a fee frames will confuse the viewers. It needs to be clear so we can process what’s going on.

Honestly in my opinion i really enjoyed Hazbin Hotel mainly because of the humor and the quality animation. Although there are some mistakes in the animation that aren’t visible to the viewers eye, i agree that no animation is perfect and will probably never be perfect. But the only thing id disagree on is in 9:55 which was highly uncawed for. But it is just an opinion ontop of an opinion.

Ya know what…I can’t watch this anymore…these types of animation took love and time! If ya wanna give your opinion that’s fine but at least say 1 good thing about it…it doesn’t seem like it’s fun or informative at all. Some parts of this animation actually commit to the story ya know? I would very much appreciate it if you start to understand their work and try to give a few nice things about it. Hate me all ya want, but this is my opinion. Thank you.
I don't agree with what you said about the story, but I do with the constant switching of styles between smooth coloured lines and sharp black ones.
