DPAD in VR isn't pointless - it's an extra set of 4 buttons that are familiar to consumers. Even if they won't be used much for actual directional movement, they'll be pretty useful for the majority of other games where the DPAD is used for shortcuts like healing, area sense, calling your mount, etc.
Exactly.. I think valve has realised that definite button inputs are a good thing even in vr. One if the main issues with the knuckles is how vague the inputs can be. The grip, there's a reason you cant drop your gun in Alyx. Because if you could drop it then everyone would experience dropping them and accidentally grabbing random stuff by accident, all the time. Same with the trackpad, its tended to be used just as a 4 direction input selector in things, and so why not just have a dpad with actual buttons so you know which direction you're clicking, and can't accidentally set it off from just grazing the trackpad with your thumb.
I think Valve knows VR has a bootstrapping problem - people need expensive headsets to play VR games, and game companies need far more VR users before they'll produce AAA VR games. By making the Deckard an excellent experience for playing standard PC games, Valve can sell the headsets without needing much in the way of VR games, and in doing so, break that vicious cycle.

It's so tricky, because they're basically breaking into the mobile GPU market at that point, and they can't easily subsidize a product like that with software like they can with the Steam Deck. The problem with the latter is that it'd probably receive backlash from the community and idk if all that hassle is worth it to valve in the first place.

After digging a little, it does not seem as if Valve requires price parity for games on other clients, only for Steam keys (and even then it isn’t very enforced). However - and this seems to come from Tim Sweeney himself - devs are still scared to price lower elsewhere because Valve might exclude their game from front page promotions and the like. This is indeed a problem.

The one thing that make the parity thing harder for me to argue against is that Steam allows you to add non-Steam versions of games to your Steam launcher and get a LOT of Steam's benefits like controller mapping, overlay, etc. The devs might have to find alternatives for some things like cloud saves and matchmaking of course but Steam gives even off-platform games a pretty huge boost (without even mentioning Proton and steam-run for running things on Linux seamlessly).
If the Deck 2 has its own dGPU inside a potential Dock2 that boosts performance (nothing special given other companies do it too but Valve and SteamDeck have rep), it'd give the Switch 2 a potential run for its money since that's exactly what everyone wanted for the Switch 1 to begin with. I am really excited for Deckard as well, especially since Valve still aims to give us our PCVR library on a standalone HMD.
I own a steam deck and love it, one of my favorite gaming machines of all time, but when it was first revealed, I definitely think the controller layout was the most stupid and uncomfortable thing I could imagine, I was wrong
The Steam Deck and Steam controller are two of the most ergonomic things I have ever held. I'm stoked for a new controller. I just hope it isn't so god-awful loud like the first. I don't even use mine because its is insanely loud.
Price parity for Steam games applies only if they are selling steam keys on the other stores. If they sell a version of the game that works without Steam, then they can do it at any price.
Also, I believe that, VALVe won't take 30% if a steam key is sold outside of the steam store. So they provide the infractions for downloading updating community stuff and cloud saves without getting money from the developers/publishers if the key is sold outside of steam store, and that's why they mandate for the prices not to be lower than on steam. Source: what I remember hearing from a Thor's short.
That's not true. I challenge you to find any modern game, that's not a steam version, being sold for less on another store. Valve is the PC gaming Mafia, parading around as the innocent saint for PC gamers.
@@OrPhEeUs What do you mean by "modern game". Anyway, I don't know any example off of my mind, but publishers will not pass on to consumers the savings of not having to pay 30% if they sell their game on another store. Why would they? Especially when they can get away because people think that Valve forces them. As for indie publishers, most feel pressured to offers steam keys anywhere they sell their games because most consumers won't buy a game if it doesn't come with a steam key.
Imagine if Steam Deck 2 has a zen6 8 core + udna6 16 core APU that runs at full power docked, and disables half the cores on both the CPU and GPU when handheld 😍 And if there were two docks. One like the current one, and a second with a GPU. The second one could come with a GPU, or Valve could sell it bare bones and offer a few GPUs for us to pick from 😍
Dream scenario 1) Steamdeck 2 has an advanced form of streaming to Deckard 2) First party, affordable external gpu. Either 100ish€ for the gpu dock or better yet 300-400€ for a complete package (this would standardize the field when it comes to performance across steamdecks) 3) Steamos finally releases and becomes a fully fledged OS that would be on par or better than something like EndeavourOS or Debian (at the end of the day it's based on Arch so it is plausible). An OS you can rely to do actual work on. 4) the Controller is awesome 5) The Deckard is awesome if all these 5 come true we are in for a new generation of gaming, looking forward to it
I love the steam controller, and I can't wait to get a new one. But all I'm thinking about is how valve also just made joycon pro, and I LOVE using one in each hand, Wiimote style. I might use the Roy way more, even for flat games!
Quick correction. You said "Valve is officially making the Steam Controller 2," and that's not true. What we know is... 1. There was a leak that suggests they're making it, and 2.Based on other information, it's highly likely that this leak is true. However, for a number of reasons, it's possible that they might cancel the project and it might never see the light of day, so I'd just suggest using less decisive language when talking about this or other leaks. It's more accurate to say "It's very likely that we'll get an official announcement soon," or something to that effect. Personally, I hope the leak is true and that the controller makes it to mass production, because it will be an instant buy for me personally. Great video!
I am 100% here for the Deckard! As an owner of a (now depreciated) Quest 1 and seeing the Valve Index still going strong, I really want to get out of the Meta ecosystem. Since I really can't place a computer where I have the most room for VR (an unfinished basement is no place for a computer), getting another standalone VR headset is ideal, and I'm really hoping the Deckard is one.
I just ordered a steam deck a few days ago and didn't realize the white version was released and got sold out like the day before I ordered mine lol. I'm pissed.
I feel like the Valve Lawsuit is going to be interesting... I hope the change is just a raw "we take x% from every key activation MINUS review copies" to prevent people from using valve's distribution network and selling the keys cheap on a personal site or something. Valve has a good track record when it comes to how they treat their clients, so I hope the lawsuit turns beneficial for both parties.
3:30 A modular Steam Deck 2 would be fantastic, just hoping the "Deckard", which is supposedly a standalone VR unit, fully supports PCVR, which with Valves track record, this should be plausible, just can't get my hopes up yet.
Also, Valve has removed the Steam Controller 1's page from the Steam Store. I had it wishlisted (to try and indicate how I wanted them to try again) and it became a blank space on my wishlist (Used to say Steam Controller and now says "(unavailable item)" and has no image) the other day. They're probably revamping the page for Steam Controller 2's launch.
I pray the second steam controller works well in a Wayland environment. I had to give up using the original Steam Controller several years back because it was unusable outside of X11.
While I'm glad the Steam Controller 2 exists, I do have doubts about the usability of those trackpads as primary inputs - the right trackpad in particular seems like it'll be a reach if you want your pointing and middle fingers resting on the bumper and triggers at the same time. Which is a shame because I loved the OG Steam Controller for FPS games where a joystick just doesn't cut it for aiming.
Ya know, the SteamDeck s Internal Board Design is Modular, meaning, the Main MOTHERBOARD is In Fact, a Mother Board... The rest of the boards in there are Modules, the Yokes is on Module, the Pads, Module, buttons, Module, LED or LCD. . . Modular... I could be slightly wrong, BUT Steam could Capitalize on the DIY guys by selling an Updated Motherboard that has More RAM (I say a guy pop 32-64 Gigs of RamChips on his) ... And they Could - Could offera APU and RAM upgraded MoBo Replacement... Just saying, if you already have the Unit, you probably love it ... Got it customized the way you like... What could make it better? ... An Upgraded APU,SoC (aka South/North Bridge Combo) with maybe Dual USB-c (make one optional for the ModSquad) ... Ya know, compatible with LED at least so we can still KickIt a few more years... I know it's not likely because they would have to price it almost as much as the Deck2 (they should call it the SteamDeck Pro) it would be cool to get a Front plate and LED screen upgrade that updates the DeckLCD's screen to be a bit Bigger than it was and fill the Boarder...) maybe someone did that already. Anyway, I support Steam, they've always been there for Gamers since day One, they deserve to get ahead, ya know, it's really sketchy to me how all these Chinese "Emulator" companies can get away with Murder, but they wanna Attack Valve... It's because it's an American Company I think... The rules are Bogus, it's like OK, if you're a Good Dude and you happen to accidentally ONE TIME walk out of a Walmart with a Snickers that you didn't pay for, prepare for getting Tackled in the Parking Lot by Blart Mall Cop... BUT, if you're NOT a good guy (Nintendo) ... somehow you always leave the mall with two 118' Flat Screen TVs, a Gold Watch, and Fly Nikes ... No one bats an eye. Funny how that works... The law only applies to Honorable People it seems. Often Dishonorable people squeeze right through the cracks ... Un noticed (intentionally in noticed I think)
7:40 i love suika, its a shame that the game that presented me to this concept no longer is avaliable... its was a parody with touhou characters and suika gameplay, there is a character named suika on touhou
i just hope they actually distribute worldwide, cause i couldn't buy the first one because they didn't sold it in Brazil. also hope that the analogs are hal effect or TMRs
I guess it comes with 4 back buttons too. Are they gonna price it the same as pro controllers from Xbox/Ps? I don't know about the first iteration fyi.
But other countries have extremely high inflation, so even a game that we find cheap for $10, might cost them 100s of dollars comparatively in another country. So the easiest thing to do is to simply use region locked product codes.
Thank goodness for the new steam controller having symmetrical sticks. I'm getting so tired of people saying a Dpad up top some how makes it dominant and unsuitable for modern games. Your thumb is half an inch to the right! it's not that significant a change that it's going to improve how you play. At most the difference between the two is an arbitrary choice made by a designer, and I just plain prefer my controller not look like it was designed by randomly throwing darts at a controller outline.
This might just be my imagination, but I think your editing cuts all got offset past the point in the video where the audio is synced up again. Not a problem at all, but it makes the timing of your delivery feel unusual.
The way you describe it there’s only upside at Valve losing thise case (better freedom for devs and/or a better profit cut for their game). I don’t think steam is immune to enshitification either so I’m interesting on how it will end. Personally I’ve always felt that the 1/3 cut that steam take on profit is ridiculously high.
Actually, there's more downsides even for devs than upsides. Right now developers can generate steam keys for free and sell them on other plattforms for whatever price they want generally, as long as it isn't dramatically undercutting Steam. They make money from people wanting the game on Steam. Steam customers win by getting the game a bit cheaper and having the benefits of Steam, and Steam wins, albeit in a lesser form by having customers on steam who will probably buy games on Steam as well. What the plaintiffs want is a future where they can drive all consumers to stores like Epic's where they get a better deal, but Epic's store is absolutely terrible for most consumers and for years it hasn't done as well because Epic isn't like Valve, they don't see any need to improve their service or improve PC gaming as a whole. They already tried exclusive games. And if the plaintiffs win, then they could bribe developers to essentially sabotage the Steam versions of their games in order to drive more sales to Epic's. What would happen if Valve lost is that they would probably have to start charging to generate keys in order to make up the loss from devs undercutting them. That, or put in stronger limitations to key generation. This would likely end up harming a large part of the third party key market whereas the biggest winners would be stores like EGS who would be even more emboldened to take anti-consumer stances. As for the cut itself, a fair price is ultimately one that both parties agree to. We've been hearing from certain publishers such as Epic for years that Steam's cut was unfair, but it's still largely industry standard. Those that have a lower cut provide less services and features for customers compared to Steam as well. Publishers that left Steam ultimately came back because whether they wanted to admit it, it's ultimately the consumer that is paying the cut. And of course, those same publishers never shared any of the savings with customers when they left Steam. At the end of the day, the price for these games stayed the same whether they were on Steam or not (if anything, they tend to get cheaper on Steam despite the cut). And yeah simple math shows that getting a higher cut means nothing if far fewer people are buying your game. I would rather get 70% of a million dollars than 88% of 1000 dollars.
The only thing I want to change from the steam deck, if it’s kind of mimicking the steam deck, is the D pad. The D pad on the steam deck is terrible in fighting games. I would love for them to emulate the deep pad that’s on the Xbox series X controller. It’s the perfect pad
If SteamDeck 2 can plug into an external GPU I'm selling my PC and my desk setup will be a storage + GPU + peripherals And if Linux isn't good enough for something I can connect an external SSD to dual boot into Windows Legit will not need a PC, will recommend it to everyone, it would be the perfect piece of technology
Be careful, Castlevania Dominus collection is not a native PC port, is just an emulation, btw you can find the same visual glitches and artifacts in NDS emulators.
I'm so happy 2K removed their launcher. It was literally the most unnecessary launcher I've seen and I've seen a lot. At least Ubisoft does something else
Valve "mistakenly leaked it", yeah "it was not intentional" to get the geeks and nerds to get chatting about it and create some niche conversation on the interwebs ")
I hope valve wins the lawsuit in this case. They're not doing anything wrong. The pricing parody insures that valve competes where it should be, as a platform for games. If they lose, it'd be worse for the consumers, having to have multiple launchers and services to get cheaper prices. (Even though Valve has good sales already)
Honestly I'm sorta on valve's side, I don't think game publishers should be allowed to make deals with other platforms (or make their own) where they sell their games for like 15 bucks while selling them on steam for 80, just to get people to sign up without actually providing a good service. Steam's policy seems to enforce fair competition by ensuring price and feature parity with other providers and platform. If other companies want to compete with steam they should do so by making a competing platform that people would want to use instead of or alongside steam, not by making deals with each other to sell at a discount only on competing platforms that otherwise don't really offer much.
Stop licking their boots. If I want to sell my game on another store for a lower price for whatever reason, I should be able to without Valve throwing their weight around. It's people like you who up hold monopolies.
@@OrPhEeUs I don't want gaming platforms to meet the same fate that streaming platforms have, a dozen different services where all the things you want are scattered between so you need to juggle a dozen different accounts each with their own client for just a handful of games each. To be fair, valve definitely aren't all good guys here. I left that out because I didn't want my initial comment to get even longer but valve is definitely pretty heavy handed towards the sellers on their platform. Their priorities for steam seem mostly focused towards customers and the overall gaming industry in general which is at odds with the interests of the sellers. Game developers and sellers always want to spend less money and make more money, customers always want cheaper games and better access, and both want it to an extend that is unsustainable for the industry at large. And valve has positioned itself right in the middle of these conflicting interests. Personally I appreciate the stability the gaming industry has had for the past 2 decades and in particular how it so far has resisted the growing enshittification we've been seeing all over online services in large part due to steam. The big budged AAA games sector has been a hot mess for the past 3 years or so, ubisoft in particular, mostly as a result of them wanting to make more money while putting in less effort. I really don't want that to spread into the gaming platforms that are at the center of this. Also more of a footnote: Technically a company having a monopoly alone is not a problem, the problem is when that company uses it's dominant power to prevent others from competing and/or screws over partners and customers cuz they have no other choice. aka the problem isn't market dominance, it's them being a dick about it. If a company ends up a monopoly simply because they're fair and square the best at everything to the point where no one wants to use anything else that shouldn't be an issue, but potential competitors would want to call foul regardless simply because they have no way of matching that on a level playing field. Though, I don't think that applies to valve at ALL. Or any game platform for that matter, even a hypothetical perfect one. In an absolutely ideal world, we could buy and install any game we want to standalone without being tied to any platform. And that part is sadly diminishing more and more.
I truly hope that if the next steam deck accepts eternal GPUs that they don't pull an ASUS and make a proprietary unit and instead just sell a GPU en-closer.
I'm excited for the new Steam controller. I hope it has Hall Effect or TMR sticks, but I'll probably get it either way. I imagine there'd be aftermarket sticks you could put in eventually anyway. Hopefully it doesn't cost more than like $80. I've also been wondering recently if VR-style controllers for non-VR games could work well. The split form factor should have improved ergonomics and allow you to sit back with your arms at your side when playing. So I'll be keeping an eye on those new VR controllers as well. I think Valve is in the wrong on this court case and I hope they lose. No hate against Valve of course. No one's perfect. The price parity thing is pretty sketchy. They also have some questionable behavior for games activated from keys where your review doesn't count the same as if you'd bought it directly on Steam. I would like to see those things change in the future.

You alraedy can connect an eGPU to steam deck, but in a janky way.
@@zbigniew2628 yep seen that a while ago. Requires the only nvme slot
Just bought the CASTLEVANIA COLLECTIONS BUNDLE from Steam, thanks for the nudge on the series!
8:00 Shogun Showdown is also free as part of Prime Gaming, just as a heads up for folks.
I own a steam deck and love it, one of my favorite gaming machines of all time, but when it was first revealed, I definitely think the controller layout was the most stupid and uncomfortable thing I could imagine, I was wrong
im so fkn hyped for a REAL controller by a company that gives a F, i cant wait
So how do we get other publishers to eliminate their launchers with steam like 2k ? 😆
Great video! Really cool you let your cat edit it.
🤣 listen
Oh. Audio
As always, thanks for the greatest and latest Deck news.
Absolutely getting the New Steam Controller. Actually probably getting two of them
Imagine if Steam Deck 2 has a zen6 8 core + udna6 16 core APU that runs at full power docked, and disables half the cores on both the CPU and GPU when handheld 😍
And if there were two docks. One like the current one, and a second with a GPU. The second one could come with a GPU, or Valve could sell it bare bones and offer a few GPUs for us to pick from 😍
D-Pad dominant is the only way to go, because you also get symmetrical sticks. The X-Box off-set thumb stick bullshit has always been awful
i love my LCD deck... i know the oled has better battery but man. ill never get rid of the lcd
Same, the only thing id replace it with would be the Steam Deck 2 but that will take some time.
I still have and play games on my LCD Deck even though I have an OLED one.
10:01 finally an AR game where your feet are constantly burning!
Dream scenario
1) Steamdeck 2 has an advanced form of streaming to Deckard
2) First party, affordable external gpu. Either 100ish€ for the gpu dock or better yet 300-400€ for a complete package (this would standardize the field when it comes to performance across steamdecks)
3) Steamos finally releases and becomes a fully fledged OS that would be on par or better than something like EndeavourOS or Debian (at the end of the day it's based on Arch so it is plausible). An OS you can rely to do actual work on.
4) the Controller is awesome
5) The Deckard is awesome
if all these 5 come true we are in for a new generation of gaming, looking forward to it
I love the steam controller, and I can't wait to get a new one.
I wonder if they’ll release limited edition versions to match the LE steam decks
"Valve gives us what we want..."
Half-Life 3?
This is awesome just what I wanted I still would prefer the back button of the dualsense edge.
I just ordered a steam deck a few days ago and didn't realize the white version was released and got sold out like the day before I ordered mine lol. I'm pissed.
Why pissed? They play the exact same way and the white ones just get visibly dirty faster
Can’t wait for 3d in a “reasonable size”
I'm buying this faster than the Futurama meme!
I pray the second steam controller works well in a Wayland environment. I had to give up using the original Steam Controller several years back because it was unusable outside of X11.
Steam Deck is the most comfortable controller I’ve ever experienced so if the controller is just as good I’m buying three day one!
Steam needs to create a quality budget VR sets AND wheels and pedals
While I'm glad the Steam Controller 2 exists, I do have doubts about the usability of those trackpads as primary inputs - the right trackpad in particular seems like it'll be a reach if you want your pointing and middle fingers resting on the bumper and triggers at the same time.
Which is a shame because I loved the OG Steam Controller for FPS games where a joystick just doesn't cut it for aiming.
Day one purchase when it comes out, hope it has 4 buttons on the back still like the SD since we didn't get to see it.
Let's hope the potential new Playstation handheld is an actual device instead of whatever the Playstion Portal was supposed to be.
I will be buying that steam deck day 1 if its truly what they're making
Tencent is using the same technology style of 3D that the 3DS used back in 2011. Hopefully this one won't cause headaches like the 3DS did for many.
The Deckard is probably valve's way of saying "you wanted 1080p steam deck? What about 4k?
I don't think it was the audio desync but it seemed the edits cut off your last words in each chapter. Week 3 chapters for sure
Not sold on the Steam controller. Already have a Xbox and Dualsense controller for PC gaming. Now if one craps out and the price is right I’ll bite.
A year?! I was hoping for the next few months.
Valve should let us use our steam deck as a controller similar to the wii U
What was the classic shooter in the first part of the video that was playing on the steam deck?
This title should include the word “again”
The controller needs audio output functionality and it will be perfect imo. Plz valve. Don't fuck that up 😭
What games are those at 2:22 and 2:24?
What I want is easy access to live stream Gameplay.
Weird cut around 01:20. You cut yourself short ;). You wanted to say: or will it be released with some kind of device I believe.
Anyone see the razer controllers that have a 2nd button next to the L1 and R1 bumpers? That seems like it would be even more handy
The only thing I want to change from the steam deck, if it’s kind of mimicking the steam deck, is the D pad. The D pad on the steam deck is terrible in fighting games. I would love for them to emulate the deep pad that’s on the Xbox series X controller. It’s the perfect pad
If SteamDeck 2 can plug into an external GPU I'm selling my PC and my desk setup will be a storage + GPU + peripherals
And if Linux isn't good enough for something I can connect an external SSD to dual boot into Windows
Legit will not need a PC, will recommend it to everyone, it would be the perfect piece of technology
Valve gives us what we want i thought its Steamdeck 2
Be careful, Castlevania Dominus collection is not a native PC port, is just an emulation, btw you can find the same visual glitches and artifacts in NDS emulators.
3D renders in a driver? Did this leak or was it leaked? I wouldn’t put it past Valve to have planted this information.
I'm so happy 2K removed their launcher. It was literally the most unnecessary launcher I've seen and I've seen a lot. At least Ubisoft does something else
Big desync at the start
Valve "mistakenly leaked it", yeah "it was not intentional" to get the geeks and nerds to get chatting about it and create some niche conversation on the interwebs ")
Sweet merciful duke, look at that chonkster of a controller!!
Edit: I'd like to know what game was that at the end, the snowboard one.
NFS Unbound is 4.95
Any news on the anti chest situation? I really wanna play COD without windows
The Steam Deck is very comfortable, but the Steam controller is horrific. I hope it's more like the former rather than the latter.
seeing the MSI claw sold out makes me lose faith in humanity
I hope valve wins the lawsuit in this case. They're not doing anything wrong. The pricing parody insures that valve competes where it should be, as a platform for games. If they lose, it'd be worse for the consumers, having to have multiple launchers and services to get cheaper prices. (Even though Valve has good sales already)
Glueing down vital parts should be illegal
It sure does~
Valve! Shut up and take my money!!!
I'd be fine with only one track pad on the right side
x box should sell a handheld that can dual boot they could sell a lot considering they don't have any good games as of now.
Can't wait I already master the original
Valve isn't even the #1 online game store, its the 2nd. Its the NSFW one that is first...
