DC native here--the advice here is spot-on. If you come to DC around the Cherry Blossom Festival, July 4th, or any major government event, prepare to pay a premium and deal with crowds.

When we went in 2019, we stayed out in Fairfax and took the metro into town every day. The Fairfax terminal has TWO parking garages. Saved a ton of money over what it would have cost to stay closer to the mall.

It really did, said at a nice Best Western that had a great breakfast buffet and we just drove to the Metro terminal ourselves, all bets are off if you don't have a car while you're there

People should factor in metro cost. It's probably more than you think from the remote stops.

@@denisefromdc1796 compared the cost of parking in DC or staying closer, it was a huge bargain.

D.C. has been on our must visited list for over a decade, but Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, have gotten on the way. One of these years. Good tips too.

If you're a tourist food is going to be a big expense. Try to get a hotel that has free breakfast or brunch. Most food you're going to find around the tourists sites are food trucks.

We have been twice to Washington, and we really were happy for the underground services. But, second time it was in summer, and it was just too hot. Next time I really would come in spring or autumn again.

Something that is also really great about the metro is that you can usually get a day pass for the metro for around $12. It sounds a little expensive but if you are going to be using the metro all day to go to places in Maryland and Virginia, then it’s worth it for sure (not if you have a lot of family with you maybe)

I did a food on foot tour in New York- the tour guide was amazing on the places he took us and food was awesome. We also got a history on the place and area.
Is there anything similar in DC?

The next time I am in WDC, I will just eat where I am for lunch, such as museum cafes, food trucks, etc. Dinner is takeout from a restaurant or a grocery store. I always stay in Virginia so there are places to go. I usually stay at a hotel that has a breakfast included. There are ways to get around the high cost.

oh you can spend $$ fast in this town (esp Georgetown) my security team spent $3,000 in 1 night just on food , booze and umm lady friends at 1 of the upscale umm "dance club " and then at 1 of the clubs lol. Deff going around with someone who knows the area is the best thing to do to find the cheap eats. the Mall is great but can be very mobbed at times.

For the most part, tours are useless. You won't remember 99% of the information. It is a better investment to buy a good guide book. The book well stay in your library and will be useful for years to come
