    • @RDDHopsing77

      Thanks Joe for letting me know that "Death Of A Clown" was a tribute to Stan Laurel who died in 1965. I have every Kinks album and many rare songs. Laurel and Hardy are one of the great comedians / comedic duos of all time. To me the best.
      As Stan said before he died.
      "If any of you cry at my funeral
      I'll never talk to you again." (PS..... I was..... The Phantom. The Ghost who walks.)

    • @ooheaven1459
      @ooheaven1459 9 месяцев назад

      The belief that this song is about Stan Laurel is a common misconception. Davies detailed the motives behind the song in an interview a few years ago - quote "One night I nodded off at a party and woke up and saw all these decadent people running around. I had a vision of being a circus clown. I thought, “What are we doing?” We were going from day to day to day like performing seals. And that’s where I got the idea for [the 1967 single] “Death of a Clown.” I went back to me mum’s house with the same old out-of-tune piano and I plunked out three notes, and it turned into the song."

    I find a beautiful allure to this song considering it was jokingly suggested to a friend (who was a full blown alcoholic) that he'd find it ironically hilarious to be played at his funeral. Less than a year later the alcohol killed him and couldn't help but smile when he had chosen this as his final song as he was cremated in his cardboard coffin. Dude was a legend til the end.

    There is something timeless about the Kinks compositions and this is a perfect example. A sad song of a fading memory someone described as peeling grafitti at a dead fairground. A wonderful image to accompany the song. And the fuzzy images of people dancing old time style in the video is a brilliant idea.

      Timeless works very well in describing the work released by The Kinks throughout the entirety of their career. They never fit in with nearly anything their contemporaries were doing. In their biggest hayday, the early 60's into the early 70's they were doing very amazing stuff and never did they sound like anyone/anything else. Hell, Pete Townshend of "The Who" has admitted to being not only a big fan, but also that their earliest singles were heavily "influenced" by the sound of The Kinks and I believe "The Who" were, at that very early time in their career, using the production work of Shel Talmy.

    Happy Birthday Dave Davies born on February 3, 1947. He is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the English rock band the Kinks, which also featured his older brother Ray. Davies also sometimes undertook writing and/or lead vocals duties within the band, for example on songs such as "Death of a Clown", "Party Line", "Strangers" and "Rats". He has also embarked on a solo career, releasing several singles during the late 1960s and has since released eight solo albums. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Davies

    Even though it's not The Kinks, but Dave Davies of the Kinks, this song exudes everything that represents the Kinks. Namely irony, wit, sarcasm, crowned by an inimitable melody, a catchiness without being trivial. Wonderful song, it has a regular place in my songbook. Just like "Susannah's still alive", another masterpiece by Dave Davies.
