This is glorious, been searching for "is it hard to sing and play piano?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Poneyton Introductory Preeminence - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to master the piano minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
My favorite practice tip is from Robert Schumann’s “Musikalische Haus- und Lebensregeln.” “When you have done your musical day's work and feel tired, do not exert yourself further. It is better to rest than to work without pleasure and vigour.” (Original: “Hast du dein musikalisches Tagewerk gethan und fühlst dich ermüdet, so strenge dich nicht zu weiterer Arbeit an. Besser rasten, als ohne Lust und Frische arbeiten.” ) Schumann also advises; “Das »wohltemperirte Clavier« sei dein täglich Brod. Dann wirst du gewiß ein tüchtiger Musiker.” I believe in this adage because of two legendary adherents of this rule, namely Pablo Casals and Andras Schiff. (3:07, 4:01 Cannot help loving these “eTiffany” moments😂)
I was literally practing Chopin's Ballade, and was on the exact same part, and was getting ridiculously frustrated...I came onto youtube just looking for advice on practicing piano in general. I find your video and...you're practicing...THE EXACT SAME PART OF THE EXACT SAME SONG I WAS PRACTICING. felt like amazing luck
It’s kind of relieving to see your practice style. I am rather sporadic with my practice, but drill specific spots and points of my pieces in the same way! I’ve been watching your videos for motivation in my pursuit of music so thank you so much for your energy and videos!
I really enjoyed this practice video. I’ve never sat with or sat through someone’s practice time other than my own. And, you’re right about not having a routine. I actually tried to set one and then I felt so bored that each time I practiced I had to purposely do different things and the practice became more rewarding and I got more out of it. I can see why many people were asking you about doing this video. It answered so many questions. Everyone wants a bit of guidance from you to be able to play well. For those who did not have a routine now feel more certain that they are on the right track. At the end your message was to do what works for you. As I can only speak for myself, after listening to what you said, I no longer feel guilty that I’m doing something wrong with my practice. As it is, I have little time these days to get to the piano each week and so what you said made a big difference for me so thank you so very much! If you have time and don’t mind, I would love to see another one of these practice videos!!!
Totally agree with you, I watched till the end. There is no routine. Just practice. To make the music sounds good. So happy, you have enlightened us about the myth of practice routines.
My main struggle is finding enough motivation to keep practicing to get a piece from, say, 60-70% to 90-100%. I don't normally struggle with motivation at the beginning but my motivation dies when I get to about 60%, and I get bored. If anyone has any tips on how to overcome that, I'd love to hear them :)
Yes actually! I’ve struggled with that a lot myself, so I’ve found that playing the piece EXTREMELY slowly with lots of expression helps with boredom. Also, if you keep drilling a piece from beginning to end over and over, you WILL get bored. So maybe try doing the slow practice on different sections. Sorry if this was too long 😅
I have a digital piano where you can transpose the key, so when I get bored I just play the song in a different key. I don’t know if that’s actually good for practicing but it makes it less boring and it does keep me motivated.
I have the same problem. I find that, first, take a break, rest your mind, a nice walk in nature somewhere, and I use youtube to find artists I love to listen to whether Classical, Jazz or Pop or Country. I also have some online mentors that help me. In addition, I try to pick music that is not to far above my grade level. And to finish, I really like to watch artists who are happy with what they are doing. That motivates me and makes me happy too. If you have friends to watch it with you , that is even better. Enjoy your journey!
Either leave the piano to do something else like eating food, take a rest, or shoot a video clip of you playing the 60%, send it to your teacher or friends who plays better piano than you to ask for advice, so that you can improve. This is usually what I do. Hope it can be helpful to you, or to anyone who needs it.
When I practise I never play the whole piece. I like to focus on some concrete fragment and then go to the next piece. At the next day I play the fragment that comes after the one I practised day before. You can’t play everything at one day bcs it would take a lot of time and would not be precise. (Sorry for my english)
I think I'm in love with her. Her videos full of honesty help me get out of my doubts about practicing and also motivates me a lot. Bravo! You are so Brave sharing even your weak aspects that are not usually shown by professional pianists. I hope this effort will be a new trend among famous pianists and than in all professional areas, too. It is not only natural for both sides but helpful in various ways. Thank you very much Tiffany! You are a pioneer!
Thank you for this video! I practice about one to three hours and I also don't have a routine, I was wondering if I should have a routine... But I'm glad to find out that you also just practice the way you feel, makes me more comfortable with practicing :) also, your videos are getting better and better!
I love the way you practice, kinda like you don't press yourself to practice. And this video reminds me so much to not give up practicing the piano. Thank you Tiffany!!
The fact that when you decide to practice, you can consistently play for an hour or more at will is awesome. I can barely motivate myself to play for an hour at a time. Keep up the good work 👍.
Great video. When I was younger I used to spend quite a bit of time going through exercises in many different variations. ie: faster, slower accenting different notes etc. it looked like you were doing the say. I love how the cat visited you occasionally.
YOU"RE AWESOME!! :) I'm so happy I found your channel! I play violin but I learn lots of useful knowledge, great advice, and cool tips from your videos. Thank you!)
Tiffany's ideal practice sounds exactly like the ideals from my Piano teacher Dr. Herbert. The freedoms of music and yourself allow you to develop guidelines for yourself and the music, which is true! there isn't only one way of teaching a student how to play a certain way, traditionally majority of music teachers strictly teach with the reading of sheet music and analyzing primarily for classical pieces. However there are teachers teach you the ability to read and understand sheet music and use it as a tool, it's like you're expanding your music theory knowledge without even realizing it. I've seen some people on RUclips and students from my school begin to make their own arrangements or transcriptions for new songs that appear on the radio or shows since there always isn't a constant source of sheet music around for the newer generation of music. Both sides show the beauty of music and freedom. there shouldn't be a set in stone routine of practice for each instrument. Don't restrict yourself as a musician! Beautiful playing as always Tiffany keep up the good work! When my school year starts again I'll be looking forward to your uploads after school like always!
This video really gave an idea to what i really do even though routines are boring and somewhat great unless if you are willing to prioritise most of the time as this point i couldn't agree even more. "I can be a bit lazy when it comes to practice" 😪 We all need a break at some point and plan what you need to do is what i mostly say to myself. Sometimes I find it really hard to compromise just because "A routine is not going to work" We're not robots, just ourselves that make the use of being productive and control things from how we want. Everyone is a unique individual Great video Tiffany ☺
Tiffany, thank you so much for this! This inspires me to keep a journal in bullet points. I hope you play in Phoenix sometime! Would be great to hear you live!
Loved this practice session you tube, you are so very talented. I will attempt to follow some of your suggestions as an older adult who has gone back to playing the piano. Thank you. Look forward to your next one.
Nice to see how a young artist at work, did watch through the end. Love your singing tones, fast running fingers and the loose arms.....will follow you to Germany and wish you all the very very best, Tiffany!!
Very good video, enjoyable and instructive. I like the concept of NOT following a ROUTINE...any routine becomes boring in the end. My biggest problem with practicing is getting motivated, inspired and ambitious. And seeing as I am a church organist, the piano is quite the opposite experience with the attack and decay of the organ sound versus the piano sound. So when I practice at home with my piano keyboard sometimes when I translate to the organ, it doesn’t work out because of the issues I described with just the attack and decay of the organ manual versus the piano keyboard. Anyway, this is not about me, but how you, Tiffany, are a very gifted player and that you’ve really got it all together at such a young age. Awesome for you! Keep up the great work with practicing/playing/performing and making these vids.
I really enjoyed your talk about this topic! I don't have a routine and sometimes my parents are bugged about that, but I can explain to them some of what you said. It's always great to see you play! Thank you so much!
I can so relate to it.. Even my practice sessions is so haphazard.. At least you do it everyday.. For me I might have a week of 2-3 hours per day followed by 2 weeks of none at all.. P.S. Day 2 of your practice shows how virtuoso you are besides your usual emotional side..
Whenever I talk to other piano students they always want to know what my piano routine is and how many hours I practice everyday...I always felt like I never had a specific routine...I don't even practice for the same amount of hours everyday, I mean, sometimes I feel like playing 3 hours, but sometimes I can only play 1hour (like today). Sometimes I play what I'm supposed to play, others I just mix the new pieces with pieces I already know. When I explain this, there's usually another piano student that looks at me like I'm crazy and doesn't really believe it (but you MUST have a practice routine, but I'm sure you play more or less for the same amount of hours everyday...) which always made me feel kind of guilty and irresponsible. As always, Tiffany, you make more sense than everyone else, and I absolutely understand the way you feel about practicing. I mean, of course it's kind of a "job" and one has to take it seriously to get better but, at last, what we do it's called "play" for some reason... isn't it...? At least that's how I feel ,and I really believe you can't tell a kid how to play :D So glad you made this video, it made me feel a lot more understood and less insecure. Hope to see more week practice videos, they're so cool (I love how you jump from one piece to another). By the way, your Ravel is just amazing. :)
Excellent practice recommendation. In French, one would say "ludique". It is a playful way of practicing and you let your brain work on things rather than burning out on it. Thank you for the inspiration. I admire your articulation and touch.
Tiffany, you did beautifully. Although it might have been for advanced students, I tried to concentrate on your practicing a myriad of skills and techniques necessary for your performance. You inspire me to keep on studying. Thank you so much!
Cutest pianist on earth. Never seen Talent being so sweet. Keep up your efforts, they're so inspiring for all of us, even a crappy pianist like me! :-) btw ain't Ravel's creations the most visionary ever? Hugs to everyone.
Great video. it was a pleasant surprise to hear so much Ballade 1 in this vlog - that's my favorite piece to play. And of course, there's Ravel - always great to hear you do Ravel - you said he's your favorite, right? Have a great time in Germany!
Although you don't have a regular routine for practicing, I think you do control well and have a clear mind when you're practicing. This is very important. I like your playing
This video was so useful! I’ve been trying to come up with a routine as I have conservatoire auditions later this year and though that I should have one! But now I realise that routines are not as important as I thought. Thanks! Love your playing by the way!!!
I love how you mentioned how you don't follow any routines, "what do you want to get out of today's practice"? Very true! But no matter what, I always try to keep sight reading as one of my main segments either before I practice a piece or after. Trying to get better everyday! Nice post.
I completely understand that mentality; that's me when it comes to exam days approaching the ABRSM tests; completely focused on 3 pieces and scales. I try to always have a consistent quality practice session as my teacher always tells me its quality over quantity that really defines that period of time. Like you said, we aren't robots so I try to be as comfortable as I can but be courteous of any important dates. Maybe someday my left hand and sight reading will be very good! Just need some patience and "trust the process". haha cheers!
Thanks for sharing, I’ve recently started listening to what I’m playing and naturally ended up practicing in directions I would normally have missed due to my previous routines.
imagine having a friend or partner or parent where you could wake up to such beautiful music because they love doing it so much and you're just like i love you playing as well HA HA
Totally agree with you! ❤️ You are such an inspiration. It's a relief to see this kind of videos because there is no "right way" to practice, cuz everyone does it differently. And there is also no way around practice in order to become better;)) I think that "we are used to" seeing this one-sided and unhealthy environment of how a musicians day is supposed to look like. I am really happy that you share classical music with the world in the way that you do... Most musicians put up their most perfect videoes, because "you don't want to put a failure on the internet, it stays on there forever".... I'm not a huge fan of this mindset, so I love and respect a lot how you encourage us to "see the truth", and THINK!!! 😅 So thank you... this video is one of my all time favorites! 🎶❤️ P.S. Peanut is such a cutiee
Thanks for making this video, it feels so close to a pianist, communicating with we people haha~ Enjoy your video, thanks for your passionate, your music sounds beautiful.
Love your conclusion. There is no routine for practicing. And also, i think it depends on the level everyone is practicing. :) Have a nice journey Tiffany and hope to see you soon. :)
This makes me feel better about my own practices being scattered, that it doesn’t have to be super rigid and planned and disciplined and robotic to make me improve. In fact this is probably better!
Here we are sometimes wary of a tough New York Female. I think we are able to trust you Tiffany and wonderful to watch your fingers and you of coarse , both on the keys and in reflection ! I think you should be relaxed about beauty and keep us all striving and excelling as humans. Lunch comes next ! diner later !
Dear Tiffany, nice, in fact awesome, lovely. My motivation is getting up in the morning and trying to play the melody which is sailing, crossing my mind. Having a good coffee and starting to practice, and starting again, and again and again. Nice watching you, I think you send me the right message of feelings to practice day by day and getting each day a little closer, a little, little closer to what they call perfection, but what is in fact living the sound and music. Cheers Tiffany, well done. Don't leave the hard work to send out finally a wonderful message of music interrupted by silence an silence interrupted by waves and wings of music.
Been loving Chopin nocturnes recently. Especially Op.9 No.1. And something else with wonderful trills that I have no number for. Has she thought of buying a small microphone to attach to her handheld. The replayed sound is always far greater quality. It captures more bass. Such microphones are easily transportable in back packs. They take up little to no room. Thanks for these lessons in classical piano. They have helped broaden my appreciation of this genre. ☯️
Absolutely loved this and thank you so much for sharing! I love seeing these behind the scenes - it really inspires me to practice! Side note would love a video about Ballade 1 with any tips or thoughts about the piece. It’s that one piece that I hope one day to be able to play through. Do you have any pieces like that where you think this is really hard but one day I’ll learn to play it?! Would also love to see you play La Campanella! Xxx
Totally agree with you 💚 I mean, that is what music really is, freedom, passion , feeling 💜 I really like you 💙 And this video make me love you even more 💛 One of the pieces that I'm playing right now it's the Chopin's raindrop prelude and I loved how you played it ❤ Hope that some day I'll play the Chopin's 1 ballade. Love u 🎵
It’s the cat guys! That’s how Tiffany progresses insanely fast. Someone get me a kitten right now😻
I don’t think that’s true. I have two dogs and every time I stop playing, they bark at me. Dogs can help too. :0
It was Benny's hug bro
Yess I love cats
mhh I have three cats and I still suck 😂
This is glorious, been searching for "is it hard to sing and play piano?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Poneyton Introductory Preeminence - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to master the piano minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
to be completely honest, this video motivated me to go practice !!! thanks for that😂❤
came down to the comments to write that haha
My favorite practice tip is from Robert Schumann’s “Musikalische Haus- und Lebensregeln.”
“When you have done your musical day's work and feel tired, do not exert yourself further. It is better to rest than to work without pleasure and vigour.”
(Original:
“Hast du dein musikalisches Tagewerk gethan und fühlst dich ermüdet, so strenge dich nicht zu weiterer Arbeit an. Besser rasten, als ohne Lust und Frische arbeiten.” )
Schumann also advises;
“Das »wohltemperirte Clavier« sei dein täglich Brod. Dann wirst du gewiß ein tüchtiger Musiker.”
I believe in this adage because of two legendary adherents of this rule, namely Pablo Casals and Andras Schiff.
(3:07, 4:01 Cannot help loving these “eTiffany” moments😂)
8:32 "too tired" didn't feel like practicing
*PROCEEDS TO PRACTICE 1.5 HOURS*
XD
A lot of professionals practice 4 hours+ every day so in comparison, 1 and a half hours is not much.
Listening to all those snatches of the G minor Ballade just gave me an appetite to hear the rest of it!
3:23 good to see I'm not the only one who rests his head on the piano from time to time :D
Omg I do that all the time as well! 😂
I keep feeling a bit sleepy whenever I do that, next thing I know I would probably be asleep 😅
can u remind me the of this piece plsss :(
@@mob6280 I think it’s Chopin Ballade no. 1 :)

A metaphysical routine: figure out what you need to work on and work it out :) Listen, evaluate, and fix
Wonderful summary of the resolution to nearly every problem encountered in life. 💙
This comment made me rethink how I'm going to practice today!! Thank you

Yeah, Google has a very good ear.

Excellent. Completely agree about ‘routine’. The best routine being no routine.. True creativity emerges that way. Thanks so much!
You are a great personality and a true inspiration.... not only to those who play music.
Thank you!
How awesome her piano routine. I only wish I could practice like her.
Wow, she's been playing for long time. It shows in a practice.
Please more like this. Of course people want to hear how you practice! This is gold for any serious pianist.
My main struggle is finding enough motivation to keep practicing to get a piece from, say, 60-70% to 90-100%. That ballade coda from day 2 gets me every time 😍
You are my motivator, when I go practice. You play chopin so perfect!

I don't like routine as well! So here is a good example to show the benefit of this way! Again, thanks for sharing your practice!! 🤓
I really enjoyed your talk about this topic! I don't have a routine and sometimes my parents are bugged about that, but I can explain to them some of what you said. It's always great to see you play! Thank you so much!

Thanks, Tiffany, it's great to have an insight how a great pianist practice, Thanks for making classical pianos so lively and fun.
That piano makes such a wonderful sound! I love seeing how much heart you put into your music. So well done indeed! Many many hugs!!
Nice to see how you practice Tiffany and its hard work not easy going to be good as you. Thank you Tiffany
I think you are the most real person i've seen on the entire internet.
Peanut 🐈 approves of your playing 💕
Really enjoy your videos! There are many times I find solutions to musical issues when I am away from the piano.

Thanks for uploading all these practice videos! They really help a lot!
Your practice videos are a major inspiration to me.
Thank you
This video was so useful! I’ve been trying to come up with a routine as I have conservatoire auditions later this year and though that I should have one! But now I realise that routines are not as important as I thought. Thanks! Love your playing by the way!!!
I just binge watched all your vlogs.
I love how you mentioned how you don't follow any routines, "what do you want to get out of today's practice"? Very true! But no matter what, I always try to keep sight reading as one of my main segments either before I practice a piece or after. Trying to get better everyday! Nice post.
I sight-read a lot in my practice sessions, just not that particular week since I had an audition 🙂
Well said! I enjoyed your practice very much. Best always!
For me, I found sometimes putting too much thoughts might be counterproductive, so just relax inside and show the most natual part of you.
李洱 that's true. That happens to me with Bach too often
Thank you tiffany for this video 🤗🤗! Love from Singapore 😍😍
It was so much fun to watch you practice! And wow You really awesome at piano! 😃👏🏻👍🏻
Incredible Tiffany !
Thank you to this great vidéo that helps .
Omg I’m in love with you!!!!!! That video was amazing and so inspirational thank you it helped my practice routine so much
Love the video! Sometimes, it's not the method that makes a great practice, but the focus and intention within it.
So inspired ♥️
Chopin ballade number 1
Totally agree with you! ❤️ You are such an inspiration. It's a relief to see this kind of videos because there is no "right way" to practice, cuz everyone does it differently. And there is also no way around practice in order to become better;))
I think that "we are used to" seeing this one-sided and unhealthy environment of how a musicians day is supposed to look like.

Thank you for posting this Tiffany
Lol when you’re laying on your arm around 3:20
😅
I do this too!
This is great. But sooner or later we need to hear the whole Ballade! : )
Great Video! Really like the way you play and express!
Thanks for making this video, it feels so close to a pianist, communicating with we people haha~
Enjoy your video, thanks for your passionate, your music sounds beautiful.
Loved this Tiffany 💕 Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your ideas and encouragement. A very fresh approach.
Motivation to keep going thank you! 🙌🙏
Way to go Tiffany and I love your kitty...beautiful and inspiring and can't wait to get our Yamaha baby grand out of storage to our new house in AZ😊
Love your conclusion. There is no routine for practicing. And also, i think it depends on the level everyone is practicing. :) Have a nice journey Tiffany and hope to see you soon. :)
i really like your ballade from what we've heard so far
This makes me feel better about my own practices being scattered, that it doesn’t have to be super rigid and planned and disciplined and robotic to make me improve. In fact this is probably better!
I’m studying Chopin’s Ballade 1! I’m about halfway through. It’s so inspiring to hear you practice it!
Your SOOO talented!!!!!
Xxx
Totally agree with you 💚 I mean, that is what music really is, freedom, passion , feeling 💜 I really like you 💙 And this video make me love you even more 💛
One of the pieces that I'm playing right now it's the Chopin's raindrop prelude and I loved how you played it ❤ Hope that some day I'll play the Chopin's 1 ballade.
Love u 🎵
Thanks for this wonderful video! Get some more ideas about how to practice and also motivations of practicing! ❤
