I was playing guitar since I was 14 and I arrived in Manhattan in the mid 80's. So I went into a pawn store in Bed Stuy looking for a 2nd hand electric guitar. I got the guitar but the store owner just happened to be playing a Wes Montgomery cassett. I was frozen as I listened to that thing. I asked him who or what it was and he told me it was Wes Montgomery on guitar. I almost blew my top, I had never heard anything like that before. When I left that store, for the next couple of weeks I traveled the length and breath of NYC visiting music stores and pawn stores buying every Wes Montgomery cassette I could get my hands on. For weeks I could not pick up the guitar because all I could hear in my head was Wes Montgomery tunes and I knew well enough not to attempt them. I went to the Library at 66 Street and just read up Wes' biography and was so sad to learn that he had passed prematurely no too long previously. From that time onwards I have become a devoted Wes Montgomery follower.
I can't get enough of the greatest jazz guitarist to walk the face of the earth. I've been listening to him since 1982. He talent is flawless. He's a musical genius!
Yeah. Usually when people talk guitar greats, it's usually "Hendrix this" or "Hendrix that" but Wes was just as innovative and influential. He even influenced Jimi on the tune "Third Stone From the Sun."
Here is what real music sounds like! Of course Wes is great as well as the entire band why don’t I hear music like this today? Wes was a genius guitarist this sounds like the roots of smooth jazz love it!
Clayton Gillaspy There aren't any gigs for jazz, so there's no incentive for the musicians to learn something hard. Some "jazz" musicians you hear on the jazz radio stations are quite dreadful which doesn't help the art form.
Debbie Lampman Debbie check out Scotty Anderson out of Cincinnati Ohio he’s the real deal get his live gig working without a net in Georgia some of the best jazz playing you will ever here right up there with Wes and joe pass
Wes is in my top 3. Bird, Wes etc. Harper however is why I search for this . There’s another version where he takes one of the best bass solos ever; electric, acoustic, bowed, plucked, jazz funk classical!
Montgomery is picking both directions with his thumb only. He's the only guitarist I've ever seen do this. No wonder Wes was often referred to simply as "The Thumb".
there is another once since a few decades that is able to alternate picking with all fingers of the right hand : Sylvain Luc - check out his early 2000 videos when he was around 30 years old. That's mind blowing.
It looks like Wes is double-jointed in his right upper thumb joint, and has a very turned out thumb at the bottom. This would likely enable him to have a more positive downstroke. I am double jointed but in the opposite direction on my left thumb, which enables me to reach over a larger expanse of the neck without moving my hand, however my palm then lies flat against the back of the neck which limits some movement and chording. Also classical technique with the thumb behind the neck supporting the claw shape is more difficult for me as my thumb joint has a tendency to collapse.
When Wes was buried, did all the guitars of the guitars of the world entered in the casket? because only this guy deserved to have indeed all the guitars of the world with him; only him knew how to play Jazz Guitar right with?...iI's a "black joke", it's bad.. i reconize, you can't joke with death, but... it was to underlined the Wes talent, so i'm redeemed...

Every time I watch this video, the combo's relaxation and synchronicity never cease to amaze me. Wes Montgomery was just born to play the guitar.
This is the best musical journey of a master at his best. It's a good thing when you can find musician to play with and have fun.

He could actually play intricate jazz lines by alternating strokes with his thumb.

Also George Benson picks like that, it's insane

sorry.. "did all the guitars of the world"...
I didn't meant "black joke" because Wes was a "black" person, i instead meant "sad joke"...
George Benson is a bad joke compared to WES MONTGOMERY.
That stupid need of comparison... so obnoxious
