    I’m trying to collect both but have a lot more masterpiece because of exactly what you said. I can accept the price for masterpiece because of the size, engineering, and look. The prices people are asking for small, beat up, and honestly not-great-looking vintage figures is ridiculous.

    I'm 47 and grew up during the G1 era, so the nostalgia hit is very potent for me, also finally being able to acquire G1 toys that were originally never available where I live in the UK is great and not figures for the sake of completion but stuff that I really wanted back in the day and finally have such as Predaking, the Monsterbots, Metalhawk etc. Masterpiece is awesome and the designs and engineering is for the most part awesome too and I tend to find that guys that are younger than me collect the Masterpiece line but I just love, still after all these years, the original Diaclone designs and the more abstract stuff from the latter G1 waves, with 1988 wave 5 being my fave toys and designs of all time. The beauty of collecting and being a Transformers fan is that their is something for everyone.

      I agree. I’d get G1 for nostalgia. My mind filled in the gaps between the cartoon and toy versions. Money was also a factor. Now I can get what I want with a bigger allowance than 40 years ago.
      If I do anything it will be one character for vintage and masterpiece. I also plan to get a static statue.

    I like the look of Masterpiece but I’m strictly a vintage G1 collector. I have a few friends that collect masterpiece and forever upgrading to the better looking version. That I don’t like, forever chasing your tail and constantly upgrading and selling. What I enjoy about vintage G1 collecting is that it resonates with my childhood and the toys I grew up and played with, and on top of that there is a beginning and a end to G1 and I’m almost finished my G1 collection and once that is done and I’ve sold my spare figures and accessories I can just sit back and enjoy my fully displayed collection. I would hate to be constantly looking to upgrade.

    • @GibDozer1
      @GibDozer1 2 года назад +1

      Eh, I'm not constantly upgrading. My MP collection is limited to the figures from the original run product sheet(plus Reflector). The only MP I've ever bought and then swapped out was MP 10. My seekers are MP11s with a Maketoys Starscream. I do have Devy and Omega too.
      Yeah, I've got a handful of characters in addition to those like Hotrod, Arcee, and Springer but I'd never upgrade any of my MPs for another version of the same character. That whole chasing the dragon thing isn't everyone is my only point. I'm not judging if it makes people happy great, but there will always be a "better" version coming. I'm more of a one and done guy.

    Years ago, I purchased a vintage G1 Sunstreaker amongst other TFs from someone, and was shocked with how small it was to when I remembered it. I think one piece not mentioned in this video is that MP figures often have the relative size to our adult hands as the old school figs had in our child-size hands. So am omnigonix or badcube or MP sunstreaker also tickles some nostalgic handling triggers.
    With the exception of one "character"/"mold", I don't "collect" G1 vintage toys; but might pick them up if I see them for a reasonable price (like when Walmart had them clearancing in store, or a convention has something unique... like Japan/Takara/diaclone variants green ratchet and black ironhide).
    The exception is the chunky monkey, 1/55 scale jetfire. As an adult, I've gotten macross renditions, takara releases, Bandai releases, KOs, colorful customs, and yes, some vintage G1s of that toy & armor. That toy was my favorite as a kid. What a satisfying *_triple-changer_*

    • @tydiriumhanger1320
      @tydiriumhanger1320  2 года назад +1

      That is a great point that as adults MP feel about the same size as G1 same as the old 3.75 figures getting remade into 6 inch scale

    • @DragoonMS
      @DragoonMS 2 года назад

      As someone who still has several Power Rangers figures over the years, against a few of Bandai America's Legacy Collection and Hasbro's Lightning Collection...I can't entirely agree with that. Each line has a distinct look & feel. Closest thing to any sort of consistency in mainline was the Action Hero mold that Bandai used from 2014's Power Rangers Super Megaforce to 2018's Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel...those were all the same scale and a similar look. But Legacy Collection & Lightning Collection? Those are bigger than pretty much everything before apart from the ol' skool 8" figures of the 90s.
      Of course, amongst the Masterpiece sect, there DO exist some familiar feels. The Datsuns, Soundwave, Hot Rod (both MP28 & MP40), and Starsaber (from what I've seen in reviews, as I never had the Japanese G1 toy for him)...are literally the G1 toys with extra steps.

    I love the nostalgia of the originals. I never got my originals back from a friend’s house when I was a kid and have been kicking myself for 35 years! I have found quite a few on ebay, and still have the G2’s I got back then but even if I managed to replaced all of the G1s I had, they still would not be MY G1’s, you know? So it is a glorious time to be a collector again with the modern version we have now. The engineering and pose-ability figures have now are simply amazing. Masterpieces are a steep price range so for now I’ll stick with the retail stuff, I think. Maybe some KO’s may be worth it but I am a guy who believes in honoring the source so I don’t have any of those just yet either. The WFC versions have taken root for me and I now have more Transformers than I’ve ever had in my life🤓

  • @joejoesim
    @joejoesim 2 года назад +1

    I have two reasons:
    1. I gave up all my GI Joes as a kid, and a few years ago decided to recreate my old collection. With TF however, I still have my vintage collection from when it wasn’t vintage at all. It’s not large, but there is nothing I am missing. Except for the rush maybe.
    2. The toys mostly “sucked” in comparison to the animation rendering of the same characters. The playability, though, was usually great. G1 TF were usually robust, and were fun to transform. However, they lacked the most important thing for fans of the animation - similarity. As a child, my imagination was bridging that gap. As an adult, however, I am craving for an accurate rendition of the characters I was a fan of. This is also why some mp collectors never transform their figures - not only is the transformation process not fun on the most part, but the very thought of damaging the figure in any way, causes more anxiety than the potential joy of handling the alternate mode. With that said, I would never buy a transformer that doesn’t transform. Go figure.

    I stopped collecting G1 in the early 2000s. Did not get into the MP/3P scene until about 2016. To me it's not about the price. Rather there's just no point in collecting old, broken down, badly aged toys from 40 years ago that barely represent the characters I grew up loving. When I was a kid my imagination was able to do the job of making them look like Transformers. As an adult it just doesn't work that way anymore. I love my MPs and my 3P stuff. I love that it looks so much like the animation models. I love the sheer ingenuity of some of the engineering. I love that I can use them to create beautiful dioramas that look like they came straight out of the show or the movie. Most of my G1 stuff is in storage, and I suspect most of it will stay there for the rest of my life. Occasionally I'll go and open some boxes, and just spend some time reminiscing about when I got them (mostly from my parents, grandmother, and brother). I'll never get rid of them, but to me they're mementos of a better time in my life and of people I loved who are no longer there, rather than a collection. I have no nostalgia for G1 Transformers in general; the only thing I have nostalgia for are the G1 Transformers I actually own because they have memories attached to them of people I miss dearly.

    As someone who offered to sort and catalog the vast collection of a friend who passed, I've concluded that the main reason for collecting G1 figures is the nostalgia of having the toys more than any nostalgia for the IP. Part of it might be trying to recapture a lost childhood in which the person either lost their original or was never able to get one back then and they're making up for lost time. Or maybe they're just trying to relive those happy times when they got super excited after getting a certain figure. Or bring back memories of a simpler time. Or maybe they're really into the history of the IP and want to own a piece of that history.

    I collect both, but for my G1 collection I'm having to buy mostly reissues because I need that, MIB, brand new feel. I think the child in me is excited for both for different reasons. MPs are exactly what I wanted as a child, a screen accurate multiposable figure. When I open the MP boxes, the excitement bubbles up inside of me and I can't stop looking at the figure. I can't believe I have an exact representation of a character I love. Where as when I get a G1 figure, It's more a feeling of satisfaction and closure, as I now have something I wanted as a child. Though that said, when I managed to track down a MIB G1 Sideswipe, I had the same feeling as when I open an MP figures.

    As a kid of the 80s, I had many of the G1 Transformers. My friend also had quite a few, and his Mom also kept the boxes and inserts. I sold mine looking to make some money to fix my car, to this day I regret that decision. Now, I COLLECT MP scale. Why? Because many of them bring back sweet memories for me, the Articulation and pose ability is SUPERIOR as well as the Price, for most not all of them, tend to be significantly cheaper than a complete, decent to good condition G1 with box and inserts etc.
    These days, I simply buy a KO of a G1, or wait for Hasbro TT to release a reprint.

    I collect both, but have slowed down on both fronts. I used to be all in on MP, but was pretty disenchanted by the overengineering and the necessity of watching a video tutorial to go from one form to the other. I would really like to see a 3rd party G1 style engineering bot. I know there were a few of those about 10 years ago from Impossible Toys, but I haven't seen anything like them since. I prefer that old chunky G1 era aesthetic at the end of the day, and this is coming from someone who has most FansToys & Transform Element / DS releases.

    I started collecting MPMs (Bayverse) about 5 years ago and only now do I start to realize the value of vintage g1 figures. They represent a different era, different priorities, different technologies and a different economy. Sure they aren't as "exciting" as the new, super accurate, complex MP figures, but they weren't trying to be. They came from diaclone and evolved to what they are now. Look at the robosen figures, that's probably the future (next 40 years) Even Takara now is doing missing link which brings the missing articulation link to vintage G1 figures.

    I collected G1's in the late 90's out of nostalgia but sold them all in the early 2000's when I realized most of them just looked awful. Engineering and scale wise they are just a mess. many barely resemble their cartoon counterparts. You overlook that as a kid but as an adult it just starts to bother you. I'm glad that now we have MP's and legends figures that closely resemble the cartoon and that are way more posable.
    The cartoon isn't much different actually. You could make a whole episode on the G1 cartoon. As a kid it was my favorite cartoon but watching it now I just notice how all over the place the storytelling is and how many visual mistakes were made.

    G1 all the way for me. That's where it all started. They're more simple and fun to transform, they have the nostalgia factor me, and I love the feeling of grabbing those last few figures (original or reissue) to complete my collection that's been building since I was a kid. I also prefer the big chunky look when it comes to Transformers. Granted, some of them didn't look great in robot mode, but in the 80's they were making simple toys for kids, not complex ones for adults, so I don't critique G1 too heavily for that.
    The MP line is really nice though. I have a couple and they look great in my display case. I appreciate how accurate they are to the comic and cartoon. I think it's great that MP exists, but for me I'm a die hard G1 guy, warts and all. Plus, once I finish my G1 collection (it's almost there), I'm done. I won't have to be constantly chasing new releases or upgrading anything. I'll buy the occasional MP if I really love it, but I have no desire to complete a MP collection.

    I've thought about this.... I don't collect G1 However I have G1 Prime, G1 Magnus, Powermaster Prime and that's about it. As a kid G1 transformers were amazing, they looked so real. I chalk this up to my imagination as a child that i just don't have as an adult. I look at G1 now and see them as they are, leftovers from another show that don't look like anything I remember them as. Now we enter Masterpiece. These are how I saw transformers as a kid. So REAL, so perfect! These make me feel like a kid again. They look exactly as they did on screen if not better. Both modes are outstanding. The nostalgia factor is raised to 💯. We all have that 1 G1 that was our go too. But G1 hasn't aged well physically and in our minds.

    Original Transformers are pieces of time that some of us appreciate and like to preserve. I collect from many generations but always focused on G1, because of course, I grew up with it.
    Nothing will ever be the same as G1. What you see today, is because of G1. I never cared about posability or stuff like that as a kid. I cared about the figure and the concept, the rest was done by my mind and imagination. With this I am not underestimating the current figures, I am just saying that they should be seen with different approaches.

    I'm a mainline collector, but I still collect a few Masterpiece and KO G1 toys of certain characters that stand out for me for one or another reason.
    The Masterpiece figures look more like collectible figures. They have presence and they have bling and they have great sculptwork.

      @@tydiriumhanger1320 True that. It's more than nostalgia or the lingering magical feeling of getting a Transformer for Christmas and enjoying every aspect of it. There was something about the combination of that purple of orange grid, the character art, the sight of the toy in alt mode behind its plastic screen, the tech specs at the back and the space battle that was just right.

    I'm collecting Hasbro Mainline Transformers Generations only, mostly WFC. They aren't as detailed as Masterpiece and some really need third party addons to look more G1 but they are affordable and mostly in scale with eachother.
    I have a few G1s like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee and KO MP Soundwave, Cassettes and Prowl.
    The MP cassettes and Megatron Soundwave pack-in are displayed with WFC.
    As a kid it was a matter of what was available at that time what we were able to buy/get. Unfortunately the toy makers decided to release "plain" stuff which is what we're nostalgic for because that's what we had. Better sculpts were available (looking at model kits) but not used because toys were for kids anyway. It all changed with Mcfarlane in the 90s.

I was introduced to transformers in 1992 or 1993 my introduction was the movie and I fell in love and during that time G2 was going on and because of those toys they make me want the original thing. As of today I own about 50 G1 toys, 7 G2 including Electro who is gold plate syndrome who is stuck in truck mode and looks good just like it is, 15 Mp and a lot of random from different lines. I still have my originals. They are at my parents' house, and my son likes to play with them, but I rarely even look at them. Years ago, I tried to find a G1 Sideswipe reissue or whatever. I'd always wanted him. All I could find were figures upwards of $100 on ebay. Nope. Screw that. Then I discovered MP and the rest was history. I hate dealing with vintage or even pre-owned stuff. Buying OR selling. I don't have the patience for it. I can't stomach the markup. It just doesn't compute in my head. I collect figures that make me happy. Not ones I can sell later and cash in.

    As a kid, I had a few G1 Transformers - Jetfire, Superion, Shockwave, the insecticons. But most of the G1 stuff was either too ugly or too expensive, so I got into GI Joe instead. But I always loved the G1 Transformers characters and cartoon. My brother and I even made a simple D&D style RPG with those original Autobots and Decepticons. Then we created some of our own Transformers in our imagination to be a part of that game we created.
    Having bought a few G1 Transformers as an adult collector (e.g. Predaking, whom I couldn't afford as a child), they never pulled me all the way in. But MP Transformers finally scratched that itch. I've been collecting them now for the last two years and am having a great time.

      there are many figure that still holds as a collector piece, but not really as a "toy to play with" that has not been touched since the great G1 revival, and the new interest can only be good for them
      take Armada Sideways, that's basicaly how the charather has been defined by the fandom, and his original toy was eccelence for the time, he's worth of with modern engieneering or even MP treatment, but since he's not G1, I don't think that's even been a third part for him, while we are drowning under other charathers

I am TF collector and I have only couple of MPs of characters that are important and loved by me. To me they are that tad bit too complex for me and I prefer the store bought Hasbro toys which to me look awesome and capture everything I want of the toy and character. MPs are beautiful rendition of their old cartoon selves. I also have original G1 toys. I agree with others' comments about what they sell for even an old wreck which is "huh" moment. I would never sell off my original G1s and I'm still slowly buying original like once year I'll get couple I don't have. I figure with the prices and the thrill of the hunt, I'm in no hurry to get original. Took me years to get original Springer at toy show.

    For me my G1 and even G2 collection is in a mystery state, basically I still have stuff with my parents and we haven't found the box they reside with and the search for that box always gets side tracked when ever I want to go through my old stuff to see what I want to go on the collector market or sell as mixed parts, that said I hope they didn't go the same way as my Dino Riders collection, buried in the backyard of my cousin's house where they still are digging up pieces of it (that collection did include the brachiosaurus). My heart is no longer in it and keeping my older collection for the newer generation of my family will break my heart for I know most of them won't value the collection beyond that of been a toy even when it reaches antic status. If I find the box, I'll have my fun photographing it, make a few stop motions and between the 45th and 50th anniversary find a home for them. If I reach my 70th birthday I'll more than likely be doing the same with the rest of the collectables I have gotten in my adult life.

My jam is the original movie, so for example, I still have my original Kup but I've also picked up Generations Sgt. Kup because it's a better, cooler, more posable figure and I like that it transforms into something that looks like an actual truck. Same with my Energon Rodimus. The only Walmart reissue I have is Blaster. I wouldn't mind picking up more but the Walmart releases tend to be overpriced until they are clearanced and they haven't put out any figures I really want. the main Reason is simple, Cartoon Accuracy, most MP collectors are looking to have something that is straight up from the cartoon, G1 toys were always a disapoint in that regard because they didnt look like the cartoon at all, theres a reason cartoon accuracy is all the boom with MP designs now, beacause thats what most Mp collectors want

I couldn't imagine my son transformering the new ones they take 10 to 30 minutes to transform. the g1 r more simple that's what's awesome bout them. kids can play with them. all the news one in my opinion r mainly for collector's to put on shelves

    I'm not into TF action figures collecting because I love the Cartoon, even though I liked it when I was a kid, I'm into it because I love action figures and TF action figures per se.
    I have 38 G1 Transformer toys because I kept them since I was a kid but most of them, if not all, aren't that good at least not as TF action figures so I have no interest whatsoever in collecting G1 TF toys.

    Because they suck, that's why.
    Seriously, I am collecting Masterpiece scaled Transformers figures precisely because how little most of the Generation 1 figures resemble their on-screen counterparts. The closest option for a perfect representation of that is what I seek. Also, another reason I loathe G1 figures is how little articulation they have, even though I never even require a huge amount of it from the figures that I am collecting. So believe me, Tydirium hanger, that I do not find myself with one character that I want to go back and get.

    Jetfire was not jetfire. Being a macross fan jetfire g1 toy was a rip off from macross, while watching the cartoon it was also totally different. The transformers fan base might think different.
    You need to remember, transformers cartoon were made based on toys made.
    A younger generation love transformers seige but I hate the line.
    Roadbuster and whirl were from dorvack
    Some people say g1 cartoon are lazy drawing, they don’t appreciate the age of the cartoon.

    Defiantly a VERY opinion driven video trying to state opinion as fact.
    I collect both vintage and MP. They are different things. Your opinion that MP is the seeking of perfection is, in my opinion, misplaced and never the intention of the line. The intent by interviews with Takara designers was to evoke nostalgia. Not seek perfection. On the other hand, vintage is perfection for what it is because it is not trying to replicate anything. MP is an attempt to replicate a very poorly drawn, ridiculously inconsistent cartoon and frankly, very bad cartoon. There IS no such thing as perfection in MP because every episode, something was different. Either scale or color or proportion or in a few cases completely different appearance. EX: Broadside. Your opinion is also VERY weighted toward the cartoon and has no consideration of the source material. The vintage toys. Just pointing out. Not trying to start a debate.
    For myself and many others, we had the toys WAY before the cartoon ever aired as the toys came out months ahead of the show nation wide. When Transformers came out, myself and all my friends and school mates all had the toys months before the show aired. Everyone I knew was like, "why does the cartoon look wrong". We all knew that Frenzy was Blue and Rumble was Red and that the cartoon was a mistake (proven in interviews and documents from old Sunbow, BTW). Even the character TechSpec profiles were different in the cartoon a lot of the time. The cartoon was meaningless except for character context and story plot. It was and still is for me, having the toy in hand that makes it real. That is what I care about. I collect both because I appreciate the vintage from my childhood and I appreciate the engineering and updated aesthetics of modern. I think there are more collectors that collect both than you think. I really think people whom collect both are in the majority. :) I'd say if there is anything holding anyone back on vintage, it is not that they think they "don't look good" or "are not perfection" or the like. I think it is the dwindling availability. Hasbro/Takara aren't doing reissues all that much anymore and the so called "reissues" (KO's) are getting harder to find too. Finding actual vintage in any decent state of condition is getting very difficult and usually ends up being a bit of a project to find missing parts or conduct repairs or restoration. This all drives up prices... which is a secondary effect... I digress.
    I will say that while the modern MP may "look" better and "articulate" better, they are usually so complicated that they are devoid of any real fun. I much prefer the fun and fidget factor of the vintage and am much more excited to acquire a new vintage piece than a new MP. I value MP for what it is and I value vintage for what it is.
