- Is the 3rd gen 24v Dodge Cummins Diesel a reliable truck? I have had to put some money into this truck right out of the gates, but so far all the issues that needed to be resurrected have been pretty minor. Although... only time will tell.

You either pay to keep a car running or you over pay grossly on a monthly car note. I think you made a good choice with your truck bud.
Truth
Anything now costs $40,000 to 80,000
White smoke is unburned fuel blue smoke is usually oil alot of times diesels will smoke on a cold start until they warm up no big deal .
Dude awesome buy man! we had one at my old job as a work truck took it to 450k miles on it..beating the crap out of it and it wouldn't die! Small things to fix here and there but that things a beast with that Cummins!
Thats what I want to hear! Thanks man
I had a neighbor who collected Ram trucks & SUVs, he drank A LOT.
I've had my 2005 since 2007 and 95k miles (only has 143k on it now) and it's been absolutely reliable. I did have one case of a cracked injector tube that stranded me, but it was an easy fix. I've since replaced all six. I also just replaced the injectors last summer. Only other repairs have been some sort of fuel pressure thing and something else, both supposedly common items around 100k and neither was expensive. Of course I did my clutch years ago because it smoked as soon as I turned up the power. But the new one has been going strong with a 400+ hp setup since then, and I tow heavy almost all the time. Now, suspension is another story. I've rebuilt the front end twice, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's almost due again.
What I want to do fairly soon is a new rebuilt head with o-rings and head studs and a cam, to prepare for compound turbos. I'm tired of having to always back off on hills due to high EGTs (when towing heavy).
Same I had an injector connector tube leaked fuel in the oil belly as it was #6 injector right at the back and thank god I noticed it so I swapped every injector and connector tube changed the oil and she’s perfect doesn’t smoke a bit and doesn’t have blow by and mine has 283k
I got an 05 with 220k 4 years ago, right now it has 270k and it's been reliable, except I had to rebuild the transmission and had to replace the fuel pump. I don't know if the injectors have been replaced, on the carfax it only showed all the maintenance done but it's still running strong no white smoke or any blowby at all.
Your videos are very imaginative . The Captain Gnarkill style
Thanks Mark
The sound effects in the drone shots are 🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽 I love it man!
Thanks! Its the little things and I appreciate you noticing!
Man what a great video. I love the area you live in man. The desert is amazing
Thanks! I love this area too
I wouldn't worry too much about a little smoke on startup. I don't have the Cummins engine but a little seepage at valve-guide seals isn't a big deal. That engine is excellent.
Thanks Knut, I appreciate the insight on it
I’ve been in several different diesels. They all smoke a little on first start up of the day. It’s where the engine is cold and doesn’t provide a complete combustion until it warms up a few mins later
Im looking forward to what you got planned. Truck and/or trailer.
Currently looking for a decent priced slide in truck bed camper. But prices are still a little steep...
@@CaptainGnarkill My buddy sold his before this video for about $2500. If i would of known you was looking for one i would of put you 2 in contact with each other. Anyways good luck on the search. One will pop up. try surprise or the old folks community. They have some good stuff.
Don’t think you’re burning oil bud. Should just be condensation from sitting, every one of my diesels do it only in the morning or whenever I start it up for the first time of the day. Nothing to worry about brother, can’t go wrong with a Cummins👍🏼
I appreciate that insight. Thanks a lot for the good news
Any TIPM problems?
New sub ! Liked 🚀👍😀
I keep hearing diesel is about to get crazy expensive and Blue Def is going to be impossible to find. I also saw a YT vid from a diesel truck dealer who said people put a million miles on diesel trucks and then change out the interior with new parts and sell them to unsuspecting buyers. He was using Fords as an example.
I hope not. Thankfully don't have the Def issue but fingers crossed
This is only 2 weeks old and has aged very well
The smoke could also be condensation build up in the exhaust system.
Since this video the truck developed terrible blowby after a hung open injector washed out one of the cylinders. Cost me a new engine. I’m thinking about making a video update soon.
@@CaptainGnarkilloh no! Was the only symptom a lil smoke on start up? How much for the new engine? Thanks. I just bought an 05 with 300k;)
It's a nice truck bro
Living the dream
Thanks
You have gotten good times out of not doing what ever one else does regarding vehicles, houses, girlfriends etc. However Old RV trailers will kick your ass, You seemed tempted to haul one of those home.
iv had my 2002 since 2013 and she’s barley at 180k, running strong, no knocks but she’s a stick single cab, never had any smoke for mine but idk if yours is a cummins but i’m a gas 4.7l
The exhaust fell apart on my 2006 because someone put a different gen exhaust on it with different mount locations. So the entire run was only mounted in one place, with a coat hanger….. dealer who sold it to me must have really looked it over….
from the view of the supers I know basically where you found all this, isn't it just mind blowing what people dump on the assumption that "someone will take care of it"......🤯😲😵😵💫 maybe they got arrested too, who knows 🤔
I would do wheel bearings and ball joints when you do the u joints...
I hear there is a bad heatwave down there. I hope you, Lexi, her Mom and Rex are ok.
white smoke means that your injectors are leaking a tiny bit. nothing to worry about right this second, but consider getting them rebuilt or replaced.
He stated in another comment 3 months ago that an injector went out and killed the engine:/
F@@OregonMotorcycle
Valve guides?
To the lake..Great plan
My 05 did the same. It’s a stuck injector. Probably #6
Thanks for the heads up
Road is like mad max
Only thing that is a money out about my Cummins is all the extra shit I want to put on it
What does your license plate ,mean on your truck?
Its just the one the state gave me
Bro I clicked this to find out about the cummins and the first 5 mins or so is some bs about trailers wtf.
Hello. Have a safe blessed day!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Yes
It makes you wonder what shit mobile these people were towing with, and why you didn’t see them with blown out tires a few miles later. The west is crazy. What state is this? AZ?
White smoke means cold cylinders not burning oil. Burning oil would be blue smoke
I
I'm not very knowlegable when it comes to diesel engines. But I would suspect leaky valve seals... Nothing big right now Wait and see how long it goes before it starts smoking a lot. Might just be normal for a diesel engine.
I almost left the video without leaving a like. My apologies, but I did catch myself just in the Nick of time :)
Hahaha! Thank you! You are much appreciated!
I was going to ask... Where is this all going? :)
Hahahaha to the lake of course
So where’s the 3rd gen?
Might have bad rings
Thought this was about Cummins…
Buttermilk UJoint Battle!!!
Yes! 100 percent
It's an injector issue.
Maybe your turbo seals are going bad.
I wish, it turned out being a hung open injector that washed out a cylinder. Had to put a new engine in this truck. Will make a video about it in near future.
It depends what block you have, wether the walking pin backs out, or the Bosch fuel injector takes a shit. These trucks can leave you by the side of road for a variety of reasons. The 5.9 Cummins is legendary but I'll stick with the 5.7 Chevy CKs.
The dowel pin thing and the 53 block deal are second gen problems I believe. I can't argue with you about Chevys, I love Duramax too.
The killer dowel pin was mostly a 12 valve Cummins problem, 53 block and VP44 injection pump was a early 24 valve Cummins problem. The 3rd gen common rail Cummins are pretty reliable, CP3 injection pump is “bullet proof” may have to replace injectors every couple hundred thousands, a sensor on the back of CP3 pump can give problems and #4 injector line can crack. Other than typical straight front axle/suspension issues and couple oil leaks here and there they pretty good starts every time truck
Yeah it’s a money pit LOL
If it’s white smoke it’s fuel
Bad injector possibly?
Yo you still sober bro?
Yes
@@CaptainGnarkill one day at a time boss! I’m proud of you and you’re my inspiration to stay sober! Salute!
Dodge means to avoid...
white = fuel probably injector
not towable...in the slightest
Odd
All dodges are bad
