The Audi RS6 is a great car -- but it has problems. Today I'm reviewing a 2003 Audi RS6 to show you why I love the RS6 so much -- and I'm going to show you all of the quirks and features of the Audi RS6. Then I'm going to drive the RS6 to show you what it's like to drive Audi's super sedan.

@@GlaringDiamon Skoda is a car brand owned by the vw group in europe we also have seat in europe which is also owned by VW group they are a little bit cheaper then volkswagens and audi's and a little bit less quality but stilll have the same engines and platforms that the vw audi group uses so they drive extremely similair but are just cheaper and have a little bit less high quality interior.

It's literally the best cup holder ever, every audi owner who has a car from that Era will tell you that
i owed several audis, it wont sweat on the radio, it would sweat on the ashtray underneath but if ur climate is on, it wont even sweat.
@@ilhankacapor6494 I had an A6 4.2 back in the day and didn't have a single issue with the cupholder, it was very stable.
I daily drive 2001 A6 and that cupholder is a blessing.
My 02 Subaru Impreza WRX has that middle sun visor as well.
The recipe to have a reliable one of this: when the transmission breaks throw it in the trash and manual swap it (it’s a bolt on and tune thing), when the turbos go replace them with bigger ones, when the brakes and rotors turn to shit just replace them with a big brake kit and when the suspensions breaks just install coilovers. You’ll spend half as much as you would trying to replace the OEM stuff and you’ll end up with an absolute monster. The 6 speed swap make it an animal. To this day I still miss it.

So as with most modern audi’s: when all the expensive parts break (inevitably) throw the whole car in the trash and dont buy modern german cars again (except maybe mercedes)

I sympathize. I owned one for about 6 months, but I got rid of it when I really started digging into the forums and learning what exactly there was to go wrong. Only Germany could make a car with the maintenance requirements and costs of a Ferrari that depreciates like a Yugo. Replaced with an E55 AMG, which was a really good call.

I have a 2016 Forester. Feels like the new gen interiors got their functionality scrambled in favor of looking nicer. Haven't been in the flashy screen legacy yet but the forester and outback interiors were better off with the previous gen

Good lord this comment is true. We drove the new RS5 in green a couple weeks ago, it was fast but miss the V8. I saw one on the way to work today and thought "hey look an RS5", then got closer and realized it was an S5... Think Audi got so caught up in seeing what people want in terms of looks, they forgot to differentiate each model tier.
Audi’s are ugly now and always have been ugly. Mercedes are beautiful now and have always been beautiful. BMW’s are fast and have always been fast.

George Swanson I get 15 mpg when I drive like a decent human being. Oil is annoying but not nearly as bad as a Mercedes. idk what u mean by tax other than registration but it wasn’t too harsh.
IcE.CreAm Russian laws require taxing on the amount of horsepower your engine has, as well as “luxury tax” which taxes you based on the initial cost of your vehicle. It’s pretty fucked up if you ask me.

Had a 2000 A6 with the 4.2L V8.
Absolutely loved that car, I still miss it after a decade. It reached 250km/h in fourth gear and was a comfortable tank that was beyond awesome in winter conditions.

There are 1296 levels of seat heating in the car, not 24! Counting also off, there are 2401 possibilities!
100sammo to be correct there are 7 levels of Seat heating 0-6.
The number of possible combinations on all four seats is just 7^4 = 2401

Mikołaj Siedlaczek Correct. The V10 engine is extremely reliable with regular service, no transmission issues, Electronics are generally very good since it was a later C6. Even though it was much more reliable than this C5 RS6, I still appreciate the C5 and the fact we at least got it once the states.
That said, such a shame we never got the C6 RS6. Insane car.

my Legacy GT only has 4 heat settings, and in the wintertime, all I can think of is "damn, I wish there were more steps in between these..."
My 03 Jetta only had four settings and if you put it above to the passenger seat would catch on fire even if we were just operating the driver seat passenger seat would like to catch on fire only really had an actual fire one and that was when my mom was driving me to school showed up with a nice sized hole in my pants smelling like burnt crayons

When I was in middle school and high school my dad owned a black RS6. I loved that car. Those are the days we will never get back.
My favourite RS6 has to be the C6 with that glorious V10 engine and the styling that still looks modern inside and out.

Ben Mayall I agree, such a shame we never got that car. It’s actually much more reliable than the C5 RS6, and the V10 biturbo is pretty bulletproof with regular maintenance.

The rear cup holders were below the front centre of the rear seat base, amd similar pop out style like the front one but a pair instead. Easily missed though.

I loved that the armrest/storage folded up out of the way. Audi put this in other cars, too. In my 6-spd manual B7 S4 that armrest got in the way of my shifting. It was nice to fold it up and not worry about it.

I remember seeing this on my way back from school back in 2006. On a two-lane highway behind a long line of cars. I was about to switch right to pass in the seemingly free lane when I spotted what I thought was an S6 in my rear view way behind and approaching very fast. I thought there's no way I'd be able to get my humble Toyota Yaris fast enough to be out of its way. So I stayed. Thank goodness I did because this thing blew past at a frightening pace. I can still recall that glorious V8 burble as it went by.
The solar powered fan, the window shades, NAV, and the black tipped exhaust were the only options. It also came with two sets of wheels, one for winter/snow (more narrow). Oh and there was carbon fiber trim rather than wood trim.

I got to drive one of these while working at an Audi dealer. It was like a really, really, REALLY nice Passat :)
These are noticeably bigger than a B5 Passat. I have a Passat and a co-worker has a C5 A6 s-line and we've compared. The styling is very similar and the scale of all the details makes them look very very similar but you do notice the size difference when they're side by side.

cup holders in back seats are located at the bottom of seat above the center tunnel
Patrik Hanc theres typically a cupholder in the center right behind the mirror controls as well. i think they removed it and moved that odd one in the armrest after the facelift.
You should go to Europe and review performance cars we dont have in the USA, like the RS6 Avant

I think you really should do a video on the D2 S8. It's cheap now, but in its day it was a flagship super saloon with a 50-valve V8 and Audi's most complex aluminium space frame. It had so many quirks and details about it from the solar sunroof to the steering wheel shift buttons. It was lighter than the S6 of its day despite being larger and more complex.

This car really brings me back. My parents had an '03 A6 2.7T and it was (mostly) an awesome car. The rounded style was absolutely beautiful back in the day (I still really like it), especially the rear without the spoiler. The interior had a clean, utilitarian-but-luxurious aesthetic and feel (I can still smell it in my mind). And the Bose stereo was the best that I'd ever heard in a car at the time. Also, having a turbo in a well-built sedan (an AWD sedan, no less), was a special treat back then. The progressive building of boost made it feel so much faster than it actually was.
My parents were wise enough to unload it immediately after the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired, seeing how many times it had to go back to the dealer and how much those repairs would have cost. They switched to Cadillac after that and have had a much better experience overall, driving the V8 STS that replaced it to over 140k miles without major issue. The 2nd generation CTS-V that followed was even better (except that the rear seats were virtually unusable due to the damn sloping roof).
In 2009, I was working at Audi VW in my area and one of these came in and I was lucky enough to detail it. No one else seemed excited about it, yet it sold within an hour of it being finished. I loved the few hours I had with this car.
Around the same time, someone traded in a pristine Geo Metro with less than 10,000 miles. I wanted that just due to its unusualness. 😆

Mk4 Jettas have that middle sun visor as well! I think it's actually intended to shield your eyes from glare when the rearview mirror is flipped down for night driving.
The center console that rotates and locks out of the way is shared as well. Cool to see how VW Group ideas spread up and down product lines.

He saw cars get easier on maintenance thanks to fuel injection and OBD, but he's barely catching up with the newer technology and engine management getting more complicated. So yeah, that makes simple mid 90's cars just about perfect for him. Unfortunately for him, not many mid 90's cars are cars people like nowadays, not even a 1994 Toyota Celica.

I had an 02' A4 for 14 years, and boosted the heck out of it with a big turbo for that whole time. Interior was basically the same. Was super reliable - loved that car. (manual trans)
love this car. Growing up as a kid my friend's dad owned this car. I remember every time I went over to his house I made a point to get a coke out of the garage fridge just to see it. I remember when it was parked in the garage at night after a long drive the RS6 would heat up the garage to at least 90 degrees just from the heat of the engine block. I had no idea about cars when I was a kid but I remember that and always thought it was super cool.
this car is literally the "there was a period in the 2000s" car for pretty much everything
I had this car and loved it. Transmission issues from the get go. Had to replace it twice. Loved the car
My favorite Audi. I love to drive these cars. Great for road trips, super quick and lots of grunt off the line. Very much a sleeper to most people who have no idea what it is until you gap them.

Hey Doug, not sure if you'll see this but I Work at Porsche of the Main Line and there are some really nice vehicles between the new and pre owned lots. everything from a 200 mile 2020 Huracan Evo to a 1985 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet in Guards Red with black interior. Glad to see your back in the area!

That windshield wiper stock was the same across all VW cars in 2000s. I remember having it in our 2004 Octavia.

IMO it reaches deeper than them not being high quality mechanically though, I believe they very deliberately engineer their cars to have a use-by date, with components specifically engineered to break down after a certain amount of use and time - so after say 5 years or whatever they become irritating to own, making the wealthy first-buyer simply trade it in on a new model. Engineered obsolescence is the term. I do think it's starting to catch up on them now though, more and more people are realising they are paying premium money for something that nobody wants to buy second hand, so they are losing a fortune in depreciation, and starting to consider other options. Even if you are wealthy losing $50,000 in depreciation in just 5 years of ownership doesn't feel smart.
Structure wish they are. Over engineered, but its let down buy its electronics. Yes Lexus is more reliable, but the european companies build stouter vehicles

Having had the 2001 Allroad, till today I am still missing it, it was incredible. Comfortable, smooth and the level of options is almost unmatched even today by most brands. I am yet to see that over the mirror sun shade on another vehicle, driver and passenger memory seats with 3 memory options, the air suspension was amazing too.

no V8 has a timing belt. u mean timing chain, which wouldn't need to be replaced, the timing CHAIN guides though...

Most of Audi's petrol engines used belts rather than chains regardless of cylinder count. I've worked on many of these engines and they are surprisingly serviceable if you follow the typical strict German procedure. The front of the car is built in a very clever way where you remove the bumper cover which is very easy to do, the you undo a number of screws and swing the entire front end out in one big piece. All the hoses for cooling and wires are on one side where the 'hinge' point is, and the you can pretty much stand inside the front of the car with everything very easily accessible. On my car with a v8 TDI engine (chains not belts) everything is located between the engine and transmission, not a very fun procedure to get access to them compared to these models..

Just bought one today, except... the previous owner put the suspension on coils, no more air. Tranny was swapped out to an R8, a lot more robust. Now I'm excited to drive it!

I have an 03 a4 and an 01 s4. It’s pretty nice having 6 settings for seat heating once you start using it. For example, when I got in my car this morning, I turned it to 4 then down to 2 when i started driving. When I got to work I put it on 3 until I went in.

Used to own an 2002 Audi A6 3.0 10 years ago. Get to say the even though it is costly to own, it had very solid ride and everything is very well put together. Still like that car.

For sure. The V10 TDI and RS6 aren't for everyone. Yeah, they aren't well engineered or well thought out. They are horribly impractical to fix. But it's VW! Part of their charm is they are so shitty they are good!

I use to have an audi a6 this generation and the cup holder position was perfect. It never driped. I had 10 cars after that and the a6 was the best in therms of cupholder because in the winter the hot air would keep my tea or cofee hot and in the sumer my coke or lemonade would stay cold because the climate would blow air straight on it. I always had perfect drink at my discretion :)

I live in Europe, we had an A6 1.9 TDI from 2002 and we sold it 4 years ago (not because it broke , because we wanted something new) . It had ~400k km . I almost cryed when i saw this review , so many memories (i know its not the same thing , but it was similar enough)

And second of all , where i live its preeeeety expensive to own something over 2L , that 1.9 tdi (manual) was still rocking , with its first transmision , the only things that needed repair or replaced was the turbo and the clutch

So many quirks and features in this car remind me of my dear old 02 A4 that I owned at one point before it got expensive to keep it running.
At 11:59: The plastic cover that comes down above the rear view mirror is not for sun blocking, but for blocking the map lights from shining in your rear view mirror when you turn them on at night. This was standard on all VW and Audis at that time (I had a MK4 Golf and it also had that feature)
