This car was featured by Autocar back in 2020. There is a long list of problems with this model as noted by many websites. I wouldn’t recommend one without an extensive Audi service history.
Had one from 2012 to 2016. The only major issue I had was with the DRC. It was cheaper to go with aftermarket coil overs than have the DRC replaced. If I recall correctly the cam belt needs replacing every 40k, which at the time was around £1k, so probably more now. As Matt said, the gearbox is showing it’s age, but I don’t recall any actual mechanical issues with it. Just make sure if you’re considering buying one, do your research, shop around for a good one and have your RS slush fund topped up just in case.
I’ve heard the biggest problem with this model is the transmission. I almost bout the sedan version of this but the transmission was slipping and the center computer screen had many dead pixels which made reading any warnings very hard.
I had one of these for 4 years. Loved it. 5 years later still regret selling it. Few owners and low mileage are musts if buying as is solid history. There is no such thing as a cheap RS6, you either pay for it up front or pay for it in maintenance. DRC usually gets replaced with coilovers for about £2k, as it’s so unreliable. I had Bilstein PSS9’s set close to original ride height and rebound on 6 clicks. Make sure gearbox has been serviced, even rebuilt, as that’s a £7k bill when it goes pop, and it will go pop at some point as the clutch pack will wear out. Cam cover gaskets sweat oil, which drips on the manifolds and causes an intermittent burning smell. Discs and pads are £2k when they need done. Tyres lasted me about 8000 miles on Pirelli’s or Continental. Averaging 20mpg is about right, which equates to about 300-350 miles from it’s 80 litre tank. A heavy right foot will drop the mpg to 5. Find a reliable independent Audi specialist familiar with working on these, you will become very good friends. I spent about £25k on maintenance over the 4 years I had it. I did 40k miles in it, which equated to £5k in fuel over 4 years when it was about £1.10 a litre for 98 octane. It should only be run on high octane fuel as it prevents engine knock, which can be a challenge to find in remote areas. Insurance was about £400 annually and emissions tax was £260. And I’d bought an unmodified 50k mile one owner car with immaculate history that added up to £30k+. These are getting close to 20 years old now, so things will go wrong and the bill typically has 4 figures. You’re not buying a £10k-£15k car, you’re buying a £60k supercar for £10k-£15k. Budget accordingly.

@Slavic Dude No idea, never owned one. But to speculate I would guess so. The auto box is the weak link in the drivetrain. S6’s supposedly lack any power low down in the rev range so quite slow off the mark, which is probably why the RS was given twin turbos to compensate. The RS6 and the S6 might look fairly similar, but they are very different animals.

So many car RUclipsrs are not hindered with any technical knowledge, otherwise he would have known that you do not rev any car with a slushbox (a car with automatic gearbox and a torque converter). This is often also the reason that manufacturers are fitting rev limiters because of the damage you can cause to dual mass flywheels / catalytic converters / torque converters / bodywork (plastics) from extreme heat build up / and all kind of thermal heat damage to the engine and its components.

When you do buy it, consider swapping out the automatic gearbox with a manual (S4/RS4 B5). It will save you quite some money on the long run. I owned a RS4 B5 for 3 years. I'd say in terms of cost those are quite better.
I got a S6 2000 4.2l v8 NA, 340hp originally equipped with a 6 speeds manuall gearbox using 5.5seconds to 0-100km/h. Full light alcentara, and recaro seats, having all original 5 alloy wheels that came with the car etc.. Love the car the sound is fantastic I got a couple of vids of it. Smooth to drive, comfy to sit in, lots and lots of room, and the steering is perfect going in the twisty roads of Norway. I payed 5000€ for the car. Well worth it🙈
Im currently thinking about buying one. So S6 does not have that many problems with the gearbox? Could it get at least 11l/100km on the highway? Thanks :) Was it at least a bit reliable? All of the S6's in my area have above 300 000km.
I nearly bought one, but for an extra seven grand I went for the C6 5.0 V10. I had a superb ‘99 4.2 V8 non turbo which I loved, so the V10 was a new experience. I think most V10 owners drive them for 5000 miles and then get tired of feeding them petrol, so I’ll see how it goes.
I personally would not be going anywhere near a C5 RS6. As people have said there are many known issues with this car. The gearbox can not cope with the power and generally fails after 40K. I bought one back when they were sensible money, with 15K of service history and it was essentially written off owing to the cost of issues found after 3 weeks of ownership. As per the internet, the Dynamic Ride System is not fit for purpose, so needs to be swapped in favour of a Coilover solution that defeats the object of having the suspension Audi designed for the car, and you need to have 4 or 5 k saved up for a gearbox rebuild when it fails. Then there is the fact it is now coming up for 20 years old. Add 2 turbos, radiator and water pipes just waiting to leak. I am so surprised to see there fetching what they are fetching when they are ticking timebombs. I wish this was not the case, but with the older S and RS models you need a low-mile garage queen that has been Audi maintained and given so much care, or they are money pits, and as I have had a C5 RS6, B6 S4, B6 RS4, B5 RS4, 2001 S3 and currently have a B5 S4, I believe I'm well placed to comment. Always good to watch you Mat, but scary stuff...

I've owned mine for over 6 years, probably covered 20,000ish miles. Only planned to own it for 3 years and ive still got, can't see myself selling it either. its not as unreliable as people think, the only major issue ive had is the alternator going which was a nightmare to replace. These car are not easy to work on! you won't find many garages wanting to work on it either. But if you don't mind getting your hands dirty it isn''t too bad, I'm pulling my engine out to upgrade some bits. The worst thing about this car is the fuel consumption, and the gearbox. if Audi had put a better gearbox in it, it would be a much better car.
My colleague bought one which had been sitting in a police compound for 2 years. He said to me it is German so should be reliable, only will need some minor things sorting. After spending £15k+ on a low mileage example he gave up! He had to replace suspension and ARB's etc, turbos and gearbox & a number of electrical issues.

There’s a sprint blue rs6 plus (1/7 sprint blue plus cars) for sale on auto trader right now. It was up for 25k a week ago and now dropped to 23k. I was talking with the previous owner in 2020 when he was selling it. It was for sale for a long time and that was just under £17k. An increase of at least £5k in 2 years I’ve been looking at rs6’s c5 and c6 for sale every day for the last 3 years. I’ve found that the prices are starting to get ahead of themselves. The prices for them are shooting up and right now it’s the worst time ever to own one. The higher priced cars have been for sale for months/years and are simply not selling. Then any owner wanting to sell sees these high priced cars and bumps theirs up too so nothings moving except from the decent examples that have been priced right.
A nice cheap car until the bills start rolling in. and they will with these. A wonderful car but don't be fooled into thinking it's a bargain. Also mention the not insignificant fact that petrol is 180p/lire right now and these things gulp the stuff
To be fair, if you just keep it in a garage without ever driving it, it could be a solid investment. I could see them appreciating in a value in a few years, especially when Audi stops developing ICE cars.
@@ultraguy8771 I would have thought petrol and diesel cars will start losing value as they will be putting more restrictions on where you can drive these cars. They are already only allowing electric cars in some city centres and are only going to expand it from there.

Well worth it🙈
I wish the C5 R/S6 models were available in North America with a manual transmission. ☹️
Im currently thinking about buying one. So S6 does not have that many problems with the gearbox?
Could it get at least 11l/100km on the highway?
Thanks :)
Was it at least a bit reliable? All of the S6's in my area have above 300 000km.
Mat thank you so much for this insane video!
Please review the Passat W8. I have one and it's bad on petrol and not very fast but it's incredibly unique and sounds cool
Hi Mat. Please review Lexus SC400.
I just shat myself when I’ve seen the car from the opposite direction came from the right
Loved these back then. Nowadays Just nostalgia.
repair cost are silly, most work....the engine needs to come out.
But I would love one of these. Exept for one thing. It’s “engine out” for literally everything when things are needed to be done to the engine.
Finaly my dream car is reviewd by my favourite motor journalist 🇵🇹👌✌✌✌
I'm going bankrupt just thinking about it.
That V8 sounds very good.
Hey Mat great video as always. But you got a yellow tint on some parts of the video, better get that checked.
These are already pretty expensive over here in Aus. Carsales: starting at $48,000, then quickly jumping up to the $80k+
Even if it was cheap, they are a maintenance and repair nightmare. So it’s probably a good thing.
for similiar money the E55 kompressor doesn't seem like a bad option either
Mat,I hope you will come with Coulthard in Plovdiv Bulgaria this weekend for the F1 movie. Will be great to see you here!
Over here in Mexico it’s Father’s Day. Congrats Mat
2:12 why did you rev the engine when it was still cold 😭
Because it’s not his 😅
Are you kidding me? Its warm look at the small gauge on the top right, it’s 90 degrees celsius as it should be. The bottom gauge shows the oil temp
@@lowrider69yearsago58 it doesn't matter if the coolant is warm or not? The oil needs to be warm, otherwise it doesn't lubricate the parts as well as it does at higher temperature
Such a handsome, classy shape and engine sounds fantastic as well 👌
Are u talking about the car 👀

I think this is the same car that is used in the movie Layer Cake.
People are asking £25k for an RS6 plus. 3 years ago they were £13k. The world has gone nuts
Nice one. The E39 M5 is still more special IMO
I had an E39 M5, but I prefer my RS6. A manual swap would be heaven.
special because rare. rare because nobody wants them. Loads of the RHD ones are in Lithuania now.
@@SnabbKassa No one wants E39 M5s? Why are they still more than double the price they were a few years ago then?
Hi Mat!
If you want to throw away money, then maybe setting it ablaze to heat a kettle might be more sensible, rather than trying to maintain an RS6 C5
So dide he sell it
@@rohanalias9053 Yeah after 2 years of owning it, he sold it at a loss.
I’ve always had a thing for older Audi wagons😁. However, what would you think of you and Carwow doing an off-road battle with budget wagons?
Unfortunately in my country everything above 2.0 is crazy expensive to insure no matter how old the car us. This one would be about 1000€ every year.
Bought one a month ago, love it!
Love you, Mat! ❤️
🤔 How nice, but does he love you?. He is a happily married man 👨....
@@alancrisp1582 He doesn’t have to love me in order for me to help him reach more people and spread across the value that he brings to the world by liking and commenting on all of his videos (because of the youtube algorithm). He is one of the most hardworking, talented and entertaining people in the world, he deserves everything that he’s got. I’ll always show love and express my gratitude towards him in every way that I can, so that more and more people get help for everything related to cars from the best source there is. I believe in helping people, uplifting people, and not being petty and condescending to people, who are trying to help, I’m referring to you btw. Have a nice day 🥳
What’s up! I guess I’m not the only one watching this dude at 1:30 am!!!
what a beautiful wagon 😍
All left hand drivers got a lil scared 8:17
Hi Mat, can you please do a BMW X5 E53 review? I think they are awesome cars and one day they will shoot up in value, since it was the first proper driver's SUV and they handle beautifully. Thank you.
Do an E38 7-Series please Matt. Maybe a shorty sport.
Now you’ve mentioned it. The prices will go through the roof
8:18 got me off guard with this car on your lane. Well, "your" if it'd been elsewhere.
You should review the B8.5 RS5 (2013-2015). I would love to get your impression of the 4.2l in the RS5!
Hi mat I love your channel underrated you tuber
you probably never watched carwow
Yes I did mate u probably didn't I was watching carwow from the time mat had his rs4 so be quiet and wait for your dad to bring back the milk
Review the A80 convertible! I love the looks but I don't have pockets to buy one let alone to keep it running! lol
Gotta love that 7k rpms revs with an oil temperature of 60°C 😂
Car review requests: Ford Focus RS Mk1 & Mk2
Mat find a Passat 2002 estate with V8 engine and review it do a 0-60 mph and brake test it.
488 pista review plis😭🙏🙏
"Cheap"
Owning this vehicle is a lesson in the difference between price and cost...
Had mine since 2014. 2 previous owners. No it’s not for sale!!
And that's it now it won't be cheap 🤣🤣🤣cheers Mat lol
Lovely car. Just get ready for the maintenance cost. Real beauty ❤️
Closest I’ve found to an RS6 C5 was an S6 C5 Sedan for relatively cheap. Although I’d rather get an Avant if I were to get an A6/S6. And unfortunately Avants are even rarer
The price makes sense just from its looks.
E39 M5 is better, RWD,Manual, a great N/A engine, better looking also better chassis
An increase of at least £5k in 2 years
I’ve been looking at rs6’s c5 and c6 for sale every day for the last 3 years.
This nigga doesn't know what he is talking about. Better off buying a A7 TDI, fewer problems, better mileage.
I loooove the Audi c5 design🤩
In Australia these are around 50k if you can even find one for sale.
Can you tell me more about Australias car pricing. How much would an E46 330ci facelift be over there for example?
*One of those soon to appreciate cars* 🔥
